Hi Paul.

Can we get a link to where the detailed spreadsheet can be found please dude? I've seen some complaining about how the different scores (not here - on FB) in regards to how sports and painting shafted overall rank because battle wasn't weighted heavily enough, and I think we'd all like to get a closer look if thats cool?

Seconded. Curious how 5 wins and a loss scored me down at 25th (was I just not winning big enough?)

A name on a list isn't a e-mail address, it's not a phone number or a user name here or on any other forum. The solution Tim used was the only one I can think of that would work.

I think this topic should be left alone from here on. It's not going to go anywhere nice. Please leve comments that are related to the actual con rather than the payment side of things.

Hey Matt and Jeff,

I haven't spoken to Paul, but I guess I have a bit of a theory in regards to what has happened to the overall rankings for the 2011 event. I will start by saying I have 100% confidence in the results and I believe that we have played (and scored) the event as it was outlined in the players pack (i.e. 50% Battle, 30% sports and 20% painting). I say this for a few reason, Paul had a lot of staff to assist him with running the games and checking all the score sheets before results were entered therefore largely eliminating errors that the players generated in the scoring system. The spreadsheet used would have been identical to what was used last year because a) it worked with no concerns raised that I am aware off and b) the scoring system was identical i.e. 50/30/20.

But this event has generated something that I haven't seen in 8 years of going to tourneys that is that 12.5% of the field were able to achieve a total overall score greater than 80/100 this year 9/72 did this. To give you an idea of how rare that is here are a few facts:

Pheno 2010 - 3/61 score more than 80/100
Stouthammer 2010 - no one achieved greater than 80/100 overall
Lords of Terra Open - 1/48 was on 80/100
High Lords - 1/38 achieved greater than 80/100
Cancon 2011 - no one achieved it

Please look for yourself but I am pretty confident that this has not been scene in a 6 game event in the last 8 years - and if it has it is not common. So this is the first aspect to take into account - score compression.

Secondly lets look in detail at the scores for Al Knight who finished second (now the assumption is the weighting is correct) if he scored max painting and sports he would score 50/50 for the soft scores which is 50/100 for the event. That would mean he would score 36.3/50 for battle (86.3-50) this equates to a battle points score of 174/240. That is a pretty damn good score - roughly equivalent to a loss and a draw and 4 wins (lets say 35 point wins and a 24 point draw and 10 point loss). Also factor in the top battle wasn't over 210 that makes his battle points this year very competitive. As I said though this is based on the weighting being correct, if battle was worth less than 50% this may shift it likewise if battle was worth more.

So what does this quick analysis tell us I think the most logical conclusion is that a lot of people scored between 175-200 battle points and listening to some of the results of the last round and seeing the scores going into the last round this would seem reasonable. The sports was pretty straight forward to score well on and i would suspect like last year most people scored at least 25/30 for that which only really leave painting and without seeing the results it is hard to say but again last year saw most people scoring between 16-19/20. When that is all combined you get the score compression as noted in the results above.

How has this compression occurred, I think the 2 random rounds may have played a part, it was easy to score of some of the bonuses even if you lost, both players could score 10+ bonus points in at least two rounds if not more. This has all allowed it to occur.

Jeff with your results have a look back at Pheno last year with an overall score of 74.33 you would have placed 12th at the Open Lords of Terra you would have been 4th, so I don't think you did badly with your scores, you were just a victim of the score compression, which I think one more round would have sorted out to a degree.

Hopefully Paul can release the full results and the bitching that Matt eludes to can stop because I firmly believe it isn't warranted and degrades the reputation of Paul as a great TO as well as those individuals who have probably scored their equivalent of a PB in terms of overall score - put simply if position 2-8 had scored that overall at any event I went to last year they probably would have placed and possibly won!!!!!

So as far as I am concerned well done to all!!!

Al Knight here.

To assist the breakdown, from memory I was at 155pts heading into the 6th round. In the final game I scored 40pts. Total points was something like 40, 10, 40, 26, 39, 40. Jason Miller or Nick HL should be able to confirm. Nick smashed me in a very entertaining game on the kill points mission and Jason and I drew on the VP mission in after general carnage. So total battlepoints points was something close to 195/240 after 6 rounds.

I think Hilly's got the breakdown and analysis spot on.

Cheers

Just got back home from travelling all over the country for work. I have sent a PM to Paul asking if he can provide the battle/sports/paint in Excel or CSV format, and also for a list of armies used.

If I don't hear back in a week, I will just load the data from the first post.

Regards

Mark C
