From the podcast:

Summary of Mk III changes from latest Primecast podcast:
MKIII has been in development for 3-4 years. Codename: Egg Roll
What has changed? - [3:50]
- We have rebalanced every model in the game. - Jason Soles
- Each warcaster has a unique, flavorful spell/ability. Some casters already had, some had to be added.
- Doubled the point scale.
- Addresses difference between Focus and Fury.
- New Mechanics:
- Power Up = Warjack are allocated a focus for starting in the caster's battlegroup.
- Spirit Bonds: As warbeasts die, Warlocks can gain fury "from the grave"
- Upped warjack/warbeast points. 28-30 points now.
- Games are still similar sized.
Why MK III vs MK 2.5?
- "Felt like the right time."
- "MKII got to a point where it was a time to readdress [interactions and power level]."
- "Look at the whole picture."
What were some lessons from MKII?
- "Punctuated by "setting huge base models free in the wild."
- "Played huge base models conservatively in places. Push them more in places"
- Global reset of the rules. Smooth things outs.
- Rework presentation. Organization to (hopefully) make information more accessible.
- Differences in Fury and Focus are addressed (in a meaningful way)
PREMEASURING
- "It already exists, felt like a loophole."
- No more 'Gotchas'
No more Fear/Terror
Change with Huge-Base Models [15:00]
- They feel like the monsters of the battlefield like they should.
Presentation of Story [17:00]
- Time-skip! Two-year jump.
- Flash-Point. First installment in a trilogy.
- Story line stuff. Resolutions and new things.
- No favorite character is safe. Plot armor is off!

I'm excited by everything but pre measuring, but giddy overall. Exciting times.

Why don't you want pre-measuring? It's the best wargame mechanic by far, really levels the playing field and makes a game more about the tactics and less about the "skill" of estimating distances correctly.

Changes sound good. I wonder if they will try to deal with the rules knowledge glut that represents a huge barrier to entry at all. Changing the point scale is a great move, the Mk2 point system lacked enough granularity to allow good internal balance. Warbeast/Warjack points going up is a ugly bandaid, hopefully it is accompanied with better point balancing of warjacks to make them viable. Power sounds like it will go a long way to help that as well.

I just don't. It's supposed to represent war o a table top, and if you call a shot and it's out of range, it's out of range. Should've done something else.

And I say this as someone who is terrible to judging distances.

Give it a try before you dismiss it. No one has ever enjoyed being out of range by a quarter inch.

I play KoW, I know how it works. But for me, guessing measurement is an integral part of game play. Was, I suppose.

I was really strongly opposed to pre-measuring when it was introduced to other games I play, but it's ended up being a very positive change in all those systems - WM/H is now one of the very few that still disallows it.

I think it's a good time for a new edition. I haven't been following the game as closely for the last 12 months (after a decade of almost mono-system focus...) but it's started to sprawl a bit too much. A "2.5" update like they did during the first edition would be a half measure now - changing things enough to allow a complete re-balancing of all models is going to be much healthier in the long run.

I wonder whether they'll keep Theme Lists in their current format, or if that bit of list-building will end up changing as well.

I agree, it feels like the right time for a new edition.

Hopefully they can reign in the bloat/sprawl of the game (not sure how, maybe make a few things a bit more generic).

Exciting times.

Theme lists always seemed to be about making unplayable things playable when they worked properly and ultimately just enabling the really busted stuff, hopefully they address it in re balancing rather than randomly buffing things in the name of theme. It was a cute idea but seemed to go a little bit sideways similar to 3rd edition 40k chapter approved lists.

While I enjoy not being able to premeasure, the game currently has too many fiddly ways to already premeasure, so going 'all-the-way' makes sense for streamlining.

I'm excited. Something fresh is good. I think Mk1 to Mk2 was a good change, and Mk2 to Mk3 has the same potential. It's going to be hard waiting for the next 2.5 months.

Also as an aside, the new battlegroup starters look awesome in the coloured plastic. Is that hard plastic like GW these days rather than the restic stuff they had previously?

Nope. Same mold line filled crap so far.

Measuring control range definitely makes it pre measuring anyway, same for other stuff. They had to rule it out or put it in, glad they put it in; hopefully speeds up people and stops them from being crippled by choice (obviously depends on the player).
