Closed lists in tourneys? Options

Wow.. First..

I suppose the guy who started this thread was going to ask should we try closed lists in tournies..

I am all for it. I like getting a surprise now and then.. BUT it depends on the player.. I know most guys don't like it.. I personally don't ask much about a players list as it detracts from my Generalship (kinda like a boat).. and dealing with surprises makes for a better general..

What about the rest of you? I know Leviathon running the ETC was a big hit for the last two years..

Hmmmm! I somehow managed to start a topic without a post.
Having not been to any 8th ed tourneys, I was wondering if they are being run as closed lists.
I was hoping to get to MOAB and Minime, but haven't looked closely at the players packs yet.
Open lists tends to knock quite a few of the magic items out, as they rely on the surprise factor,

Prob no closed lists for a while whilst everyone gets used to the rules - and some of the comp elements shake out.
After that, they might be back in action!

The easiest way to decide is to have a few tournies with and without. Then get some feeback from the players to see what they like better.

Dont understand the open list sustem. I dont really look at other peoples lists till after the game and only if they had something funky happening. There are magic items and spells that let you identify magic items etc so for me WHF was written with closed lists in mind.

Closed lists only I recon.

I don't play enough games, or have a big enough variety of opponents to have much more than a faint idea of what some armies can pack. Closed lists are a HUGE disadvantage to the less dedicated player, who goes to tournaments to get some games in.

That said, some tourneys having closed lists is cool, but nI think it would be ridiculous to call for all of them to be so.

Hard to say. A problem with open lists in Fantasy is that many of the magic tricks rely on the element of surprise (van Horstman's Speculum etc) that you can't get if your oppenent sees your army list before the game.

However, open lists for a player that doesn't own/play against every army book takes out the "that unit can do what!?!?!" factor that makes for an unenjoyable day.

Having played open lists in 40k for over 15 years, there is nothing wrong with open lists, but players need to be aware as some tricks/tactics don't work as well when they are seen.

VHS certainly does not need to be a surprize. It works plenty good as a deterrant, and you can force some uber characters to do what you want to avoid it.
