BOMB ALLEY: PART TWO

Part of this batrep is missing a few pics which I haven't been able to locate in my photo archives. Apologies. The conclusion, Part III, will reveal the climax and outcomes.

Photo S359 - The bomber slip past the English Hurricanes as their comrades (the fighters) do the muddle dance. The English failed to activate to prevent the bombers eluding them but are grateful the fighters got themselves in a conventional twist. Still...opportunity lost by all involved to do some serious shootings!

Photo S368 - In previous post, I reported 4 Rottes. Well, I stand corrected in that one of those Rottes is actually a flight of Italian Folgore fighters on loan to the Luftwaffe. They have joined the attack on the port town.

Managed to fit in a quick dogfight. Rules by Canvas Eagles. Fokker Dr-1 beautifully painted and creatively based by my opponent. The SE5a is my effort. armata_PDT_36.gif

The flight paths show that we simply went round in circles until we ended playing chicken. My opponent copped the "Pilot killed" damage chit. And that was that!

Just a friendly reminder and shout-out that I will be running a public participation game at this year's BrisCon. Saturday, 27 April. All day. Allies vs Central Powers.

If you like diving off the deep end, then pop in and have an easy game (or two) with 1/72 aircraft from the First World War. Game play is quite easy to pick up. A quick briefing intro and then you're off gallivanting in the clear blue skies. Very soon you will be zooming about on the table engaged in earnest dogfighting.

The event will be a modified version of the Fluid game which is just continuous dog-fighting for a set period.

Aircraft shot down, destroyed or forced off-table respawn at specific hex location (there will be six per side). Roll 1d6 to determine return hex.

Respawning is simple: aircraft rolls 1d6. If score is 1-4, aircraft will return in 2 turns; 5-6, aircraft return in 3 turns! When returning, place aircraft in return hex in the turn prior to respawning.

Basic day is planned with active Fluid games lasting 2 hours with a resonable break between games.

People may join/leave any time providing planes are available. Rule is first-in, first-serve.

Choose wisely as players are not allowed to switch allegiances during the game.

Period will be Late War (combat aircraft that were active from Jan 1917 onward). The Allies will be fully multi-international with English, Australian, Italian, Belgian, American. Central Powers, meanwhile, will be all-German.

Both sides will field up to nine (9) planes each. Each plane will be different from one another with the majority based on historical aircraft.

All aircraft are either single, or dual-seater fighter/fighter bombers. Exception is the Handley Page which is a heavy bomber and normally crewed by 4 in this game. Whoever opts to use the Handley needs to keep close tabs on crew losses.

Game will be played on a hexed mat table.

All participants will be deemed novice. Therefore, no tailing or restricted maneouvres allowed.

I will oversee and referee game play.

Forces are gathering in the quiet of the night. The squadrons have begun assembling (by the snoring of the dog) and will begin relocating shortly. Final destination: Mt Gravatt Community Hall, Upper Level. It's a major campaign for both sides. The Western Front has stalled. The Eastern Front is also stalemated. Mesopotamia is a mess. The fierce struggle for the Dardanelles is entering its dying stages. The war on the oceans and rivers of the world pulsates but does not merit the same attention and focus as what is about unfold about one foot off the tabletop in a neutral venue.

The eternal struggle between Good and Gooder will take place. The Bloodz and the Crispy Cremes will join in that martial tango that will decide who emerges victorious? Who will claim the imaginary crown of best Canvas Eagle pilot at BrisCon 2019, and forever earn the right and the respect to perpetually pat himself on the back when no one else will? Is it be you? Or that guy standing next to you eating that tasty corn dog? armata_PDT_13.gif

D Day is D minus 17 hours. And counting down. Can the Allies, a truly multi-national force, confront and break once-and-for-all the dominant Central Powers? Will the stranglehold power of the Red Baron forever haunt the Allied pilots to their beds? Or will Snoopy finally get his revenge, and find peace in the doghouse? Will the HP 11 find its lumbering sauce? Is Hannover truly code for Haberstadt?

All will be revealed Saturday morning as the aircraft will take to the hexed map skies over eastern Brisbane.

The Red Baron may be absent tomorrow (he's attending a wedding elsewhere) but there is still enough Prussian red ready to strike fear into the hotch-potch multi-coloured Allies? Is this where the Belgian renown for road racing first find its origins via aerial defeat? And why are the German flying in patterned pyjama-coloured aircraft? Are they actually going to be flying in their sleep/dreams? Are they that confident of their superiority over their erstwhile Allied opponents? Will the Brisfit finally emerge from its own shadow and cause mayhem among the "kreuzes"? How will "Harry Tate" fare against the nifty and nippy Fokker Drei?

Who knows...but I am going to find out come Saturday at 9am at Mt Gravatt showgounds in the Community Hall, Upper level (opposite the cafe). Two hour games of constant dogfighting. Free-for-all between the two warring factions. Who will prevail?

Finalised list of planes on offer for the public participation game today.

I will be running the Fluid game version in two scheduled sessions: The morning one is from @1000-1200 hrs while the afternoon session is slated for @1330-1530 hrs.

Each session game will be faction based, i.e., Central Powers versus Allies. Both sides will slug it out until one emerges victorious by the end of game. A five minute warning will be given.

Whoever is last pilot standing from each session is declared the winner and receives a free copy of the rules. If tied between two, then it's a face-off, or as we have started playing in our group, "Let's play chicken" starting head-on at ten hexes distance. Winner is the one who causes the most damage in the chicken run.

If, however, there are still multiple planes left over, then it becomes a free-for-all melee until one is left standing! Yes, it means it's every pilot for himself! armata_PDT_36.gif

Central Powers (subject to addition but won't know until the day):

1. Albatros DIII - (motley coloured scheme with red heart insignia).
2. Albatros DV - (motley coloured upper scheme with black and white sword lower half).
3. Fokker Dr-1 (all black colouring).
4. Fokker DVI - (hand painted disruptive colour scheme).
5. Fokker DVIII - (red and white).
6. Hannover CLIII - (similar disruptive coloured pattern as the Fokker DVI). Only two-seater in the group.
7. Pfalz DIII - (red and silver).

Allies (also subject to addition but awaiting confirmation on the day):
1. Bristol F2B or "Brisfit" - to be verified on the day
2. H.P.11 - last-minute reinforcement as my HP 11 is not ready (olive drab)
3. Nieuport 28 - (based on actual Italian air ace)
4. RAF R.E.8 or the "Harry Tate" - to be verified on the day
5. Sopwith Camel F1 (Belgian)
6. Sopwith Camel F21 (In RNAS colours)
7. Sopwith "Tripe" (Australian air ace version)
8. SE5a - British brown. Probably used in Mesopotamia.
9. SPAD XIII - US/French

Anyone can take part from 0930 hrs onwards. Just rock up and introduce yourself and request a plane. Starting hex is diced for (d6). It is possible that multiple planes may start from the same hex. There will be six such hexes per side. These also act as respawn locations. Once starting hex is determined, roll d6 to determine starting altitude (Max altitude - dice result = starting altitude). Example: the Nieuport 28 in CE has a maximum ceiling altitude of 8. Player rolls a 5. Therefore starting altitude will be 3 (8-5=3).

Please use the altitude dials on the flight bases. And also use the telescopic rods to represent appropriate altitude. It helps when taking the photos.

Remember: No tailing permitted (too complicated for this sort of game) and no restricted maneouvres (sorry, no Immelman). Just a fun day of easy basic dogfighting using 1/72 model planes.

At BrisCon. Brisfit, FE8, and Pfalz turned up as we were setting. Even enjoyed a quick game with one of the lads. Place was packed early on. Afternoon has thinned out ans is much cooler than the oven next door. biggrin.gif

Had a session with some of the guys.

An interesting day that began well, got crowded and then tapered down. Had a few admiring stares and comments. Some even tried the game. Good to see Angus active again. Much thanks to Rod, Russell and Simon for the plane loans who made the outing a success. Enjoyed a quick reconnect game with Russell who was competing in Team Yankee. Thanks to Garry for the liaison and coordinating work. Definitely going to the next BrisCon. May even put my hand up to organise a FoGN event.

Barely moved from the Community Hall, Upper level locale. But took some quick snaps.

It only lasted twelve turns. But maybe it was long overdue? Lol. Good game. Can't wait to see a whole squadron of push planes next encounter against a whole squadron of E5s!! Bloody April? Stay tuned.
