This campaign will kick off next Sunday.

Background
The Axis has invaded the Soviet Union. A swift advance is planned to capture the key cities of Moscow, Leningrad and Rostov before the winter sets in. In North Africa the Axis have besieged Tobruk, but lacking the forces to take it immediately have pushed on to the Egyptian frontier with their mobile units while their infantry move up ready to attack.
Victory
The Axis win by capturing all of Leningrad, Moscow, Rostov, Sevastopol, Tobruk, Alexandria and Cairo. The Allies win by holding all 7 at the end of the campaign. Any other result is a stalemate that will mean the war continues into 1942.
Movement
Any enemy held area that is connected by a black line to an area already controlled may be attacked.
Control of Areas
Control of an area will change when the opposing side has accumulated victory points in that area as per the following:
Tobruk, Leningrad, Sevastopol 20
Lithuania, Brest Litovsk, Lvov, Chisinau, Bessarabia 6 – this only applies to the first time the Axis take control All other areas 12 Victory points are calculated as per the FOW rulebook.

Only the victory points for winning count. For example the Axis may score two 6:1 victories in Latvia to secure it after just 2 battles. However the Axis may take 6 battles to score the required 12 points with (in order) a 5:2 win (5), 2:5 loss(5), .2:2 draw(5), 4:3 win (9), 3:4 loss (9) and finally a 5:2 win (14). Control changes as soon as the required victory point total is met.
The Soviets may not attack any Axis held area until the Axis has attacked the Moscow, Leningrad or Rostov areas.
Axis Surprise Attack
The Soviets were caught completely unawares by the Axis invasion. This is reflected in the reduced Victory points required for taking control of the border regions. In addition neither side may use air support in battles in these 5 regions (the Axis air force was fully engaged in destroying the Soviet air force on the ground). Neither side may use T34s or KVs in these regions (the Soviets had these tanks mainly positioned away from the borders).
Tobruk
Tobruk may only be attacked if Bardia is held by them and even then only by Italian Bersaglieri companies and German Infanteriekompanies if Bardia was attacked by the Allies in the previous week.

Force Restrictions
In addition to the surprise attack restrictions the Soviets can only use trained companies and Lend Lease tanks to fight battles in Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov. These forces were too few in number and too precious a resource to be committed to non-critical areas.
The Axis may only use captured T34s and KVs after all the 5 border areas are captured.
Game Size
Games are to be mutually agreed at 1500-2000 points. Use any randomly chosen mission.
Battles are initiated by a player on one side declaring an attack on an adjacent area. A player on the opposing side then agrees to fight the challenger. If no one has accepted the challenge with 7 days then the attacking player gains 3 victory points in the area attacked.
Players can fight as many battles in a week as they desire but they can only gain the 3 points for a non-answered challenge if they have not fought any other battle that week. The week commences at midday on Sunday.
It is possible for several players to declare attacks on the same area. Results are applied as the battles are resolved so if an area is captured before all battles in that area are fought then any remaining unresolved battle that has not yet commenced is fought in any adjacent area chosen by the attacker.

Multiple copies of the maps will be available at the club.

Players so far are:

Axis
Norm
Daryl
Scott
Llew

Allied
Martin
Gary
Zac
Matt

Both the African and Eastern Fronts got underway today.

A British infantry tank company attacked an Italian tank company defending the Bardia area. The British prevailed and scored a 4 point victory as the Matildas ruled the battlefield.

A German motorised Schutzen company (with 14 AFV) attacked a Soviet infantry company (with 15 AFV) in Lithuania. Despite taking huge losses the Germans eventually won a 4 point victory - they needed to pass a 4+ company check at the start of the turn to win. This was a strange game with neither side passing a single firepower roll on turn 1 (mainly at 4+). On turn 2 each side passed 1 firepower roll and on turn 3 each side passed 2 firepower rolls. The gamewinners were the 4x Pz38T that came on from reserve and destroyed a large pioneer platoon and a 3 tank T28 platoon without loss over 3 turns to capture the objective.

A German Panzer Kompany engaged a Soviet Tank company in the Brest Litovsk area and thanks to superb shooting scored a maximum 6 point win to secure the area.

It's Early War campaign day at the club this week.

The Axis has captured 3 of the 5 border area with the USSR and has won victories in the other 2.

Time to press on into the Soviet heartland.

All 5 Soviet border areas have now been captured by the Axis. Army Group North has also captured Latvia and Army Group Centre is fighting for Minsk.

In North Africa a British armoured attack on Bardia was repulsed with heavy casualties and a German thrust against the Southern portion of the British line has secured Siwa.

Following our early experience with the campaign the Victory points needed to capture areas have been amended as follows:

Tobruk, Leningrad and Sevastopol 12 points
All other areas 6 points.

Kiev has fallen to the Axis and Odessa is on the verge of capture as Army Group South surges eastward.

In North Africa the Afrika korps has taken Siwa but their thrust towards Sidi Barrani was repulsed but a British armoured counterattack.

On the Eastern Front Latvia and Pskov are now Axis controlled while the fighting continues around Minsk, Odessa and in Estonia.

I have not posted an update on the campaign for a while so here is the current position.

In North Africa, after several aborted attempts, the Axis now control Sidi Barrani.

On the Eastern front the Axis have captured Estonia, Minsk, Vitebsk, Smolensk, Gomel, Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, Sevastopol and Kursk. The Soviets front line extends from Leningrad in the North through Novgorod, Moscow, Tula, Bryansk, Voroznezh, Rostov and Stalino in the South.

Therefore at present only Sevastopol has been secured from the 7 victory locations but Leningrad, Moscow, Rostov and Tobruk are all under attack. The axis still needs to capture El Alamein in order to threaten Cairo and Alexandria.

The campaign season has ground to a close but a series of last gasp offensives saw the Axis seize the victory locations of Rostov, Leningrad and Moscow as well as the Novgorod region. They therefore achieved all their objectives on the Eastern front.

However in North Afrika the Axis forces were unable to capture any of their objectives.

My thanks to all the players who took part in the campaign.

Next year I will be running a series of short Late War campaigns that will link together to pave the road to Berlin.
