Nice work, I love the freehand.

Cheers mate biggrin.gif I usually steer away from doing any freehand stuff as its so prone to disaster, may not be the most amazing freehand paint work but its good enough for the time being.

Just to show that this diary hasn't drifted away I thought I'd put up a small update. I haven't had too much time on the brushes, but I have been plugging away at the Winged Lancers, I've got 5 on the go so it is slow going. I did manage to get some painting in tonight and blocked in all the red parts, which is most of the fiddly bits; straps, banner poles and lances. I did take some pics so I will try and get them up soon.

I actually realised that I can see the end of the project as well. Its still a fair painting cue to go, but here, in no particular order, are the remaining things:
8 x crossbowmen
Grand Theogonist
20 Halfling archers
5 Outriders

Plus a bunch of characters, Ice Queen of Kislev, another Elector Count (the one with the hawk), a selection of foot and mounted Battle Wizards, as well as some Acolytes.

Its been a little while since the last update, and to be honest not much has changed. The damn Winged Lancers are sapping my painting strength!! They aren't that far off being finished, I just can't bring myself to get them done armata_PDT_05.gif

I finally managed to finish off the first rank of Winged Lancers, these almost brought the project to a halt (I've still got another 10 to go!). These will be the last cavalry figures I'll be painting for a while armata_PDT_05.gif

Winged Lancers are looking great mate. Love those shields!

I know what you mean about cavalry models... I had the same problem with my LotR Riders of Rohan. I think it's because you're actually painting twice the models (horse plus rider) so it feels like double the work for a given quantity of finished minis. Er... not that this is a profound observation or anything...

Surely Winged Lancers only need one rank to defeat any foe, though. Right? Rule of Cool and all that. wink.gif

Cheers mate, I did the shield with the quartered pattern as I wasn't game to try the freehand design biggrin.gif

Absolutely agree, cavalry are double the amount of work for half the result. If only the Rule of Cool would work....

Last night Chaplain Fortis and I managed to get a game using one the fantastic tables at House of War in Ringwood. As in previous battles we went for 2500 points, Empire vs Undead with Chaos allies.

Here is a brief run down of the game:

Turn 1
Not much happened, some forward movement from the Empire army. Some lucky artillery fire took out a Chaos Chariot as well as a Screaming Skull catapult. Undead army moved forward as well, some nasty magic (Gaze of Nagash) took out a few Reiksguard a little too easily.

Turn 2
Grand Theogonist charged into a unit of chaos hounds, which were promptly dispatched, but did leave him quite exposed. He was then charged by a unit of wights lead by a Vampire, I fully expected the Vampire to dispatch him, although it ended up being the Wights that took the full 3 wounds off him.

Turn 3
Heinrich Kemmler failed his look out sir argggh roll and took a cannonball shot, which killed him outright. Most of the undead units failed there instability tests, leaving the Vampire, Chaos Warriors and a unit of Ghouls. Through some very potent magic, the Undead army hit back hard. Stream of Corruption took out the Steam Tank, Gaze of Nagash took out the rest of the Reiksguard knights leaving the characters and a rebounded Fate of Bjuna (can't remember the spelling) took out my Master Wizard.....ouch!! Also the remaining Reiksguard unit were charged by the Chaos Warriors

Turn 4
Both armies were heavily depleted, Kurt Helborg, Supreme Patriach and a Reiksguard champion fought against the Chaos Warriors, while they won the remaining warriors passed their break test. Vampire was locked in combat with the Flagellants. Another round of combat was fought in the Undead turn, which finished off the Supreme Patriarch and Reiksguard champion as well as the remaining Chaos Warriors, except for the Chaos Sorceror. Kurt Helborg failed his break test and ran away, although was still on the board.

We didn't go into too much detail working out who won, although I'm claiming a narrow win to the Empire, could have been more like a draw.

Here are a few pics of the game

Cheers mate, its always good to be able to get them out for a game. Although I've put this project on hold for the moment, painting up the Winged Lancers was a real drag. I'm distracting myself by painting a smallish 3rd ed Dwarf army (something without cavalry!!). I'll back to painting this army up eventually, still got plenty of miniatures to paint.
