I loved Baldurs Gate when I was a teenager and have been looking at more modern games that are similar. Anyone played Pillars of Eternity or Divinity Original Sin? Which would you recommend?

I've played the first Divinity Original Sin and loved it. It is a fairly 'hard' game, especially in the beginning. It involves a decent amount of backtracking and find ways to beat the various puzzles and enemies you will come up against.
Also the quests are rarely simple fetch or kill missions, they often require thinking and detective work.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like a challenge with awesome combat and loaded with neat ideas I highly recommend it.

Torment: Tides of Numenera is pretty good too. Combat is kind of cack but you have the option of avoiding 90% of fights by either exploration or talking your way out of it.

Loved pillars, can be pretty challenging. World lore and story are very well done too.

Thanks guys. The other ones I am looking at are the enhanced editions of Baldurs Gate or Icewind Dale (although the latter sounds still dated...)

Divinity was swearing-at-the-screen hard, but mechanically a really cool game.

Not that I have time at the moment, but it's worth getting? I heard it was in a pretty poor state around the time of release.

Icewind Dale enhanced edition is $4 on sale at EB games right now, sure it's dated but I had to pick it up for that price biggrin.gif

I've read a few reviews on Divinity and "Hard" was a fairly common description!

I'm actually thinking of getting the Enhanced Edition for Baldurs Gate 2. Loved that game, and never played any of the expansions so could be good! Anyone played that?

I haven't tried it with the latest update but if you can find it for about $50 you'll get your monies worth.

For classical RPGs nothing beat the Japanese, No come back !

Final Fantasy 13
Valkyrie Chronicles
Disgaea 2
Recattear

All classic JRPGs classic that once can pick up for cheap during a steam sale
With the classical turn based combat or time based combat for that nostalgic Japanese feels

For Western RPGs

Dragon Age origins
Legend of Grimrock
Skyrim
Avernum

You can pick up all the above games for $50 during a steam sale
Plenty of good classic RPGs to be enjoyed

Pillars is closer to Baldurs than Divinity in play style and mechanics. Both are really good games though. Honestly I'd suggest playing both.

Original Fallouts are a good RPG.

Fallout 2 is my pick of the bunch.

Does F2 stand the test of time? I've never played it (jumped on from Fallout 3 onwards)

Probably not for you.

It is isometric view turn based 99% text based RPG.

Personally I love it, emergence of the Enclave.

My list of the main games goes.

Fallout 2.
Fallout New Vegas.
Fallout 3.
Fallout.
Something posing as Fallout (ie Fallout 4).

Skyrim with guns

The settlement building was really fun, if somewhat underdeveloped. I did enjoy sending all the ghouls and black people to that ghetto with no water and food. Making the Wastelands great again !
