i kinda liked the weather effects. i can see why some people would be upset that they were 'sprung' on them but they nicely fit into my gameplay style anyway.
plus as far as i'm concerned, having other tournaments be 'more like stouthammer' is hardly a bad thing perhaps you could bring them back, so long as both players agreed to them? that way, the people who are worried about how the effects might impact on their enjoyment can opt out, while the rest of us can hurl pineapplebombs at each other? -------------------- Don't Mention The Warstore

Great job all, way to piss a T.O. Off before the events even begun.... Feel sorry for you Paul. I for one applaud your "outside the box" approach to your missions and the hard work you've put in to getting wintercon to where it is.
The rest of you, if you know Paul even remotely well should take a good look at why you even play this bloody game and perhaps an apology to him for ripping things apart before it's even begun after all the hard work he's probably already put into getting this event running -------------------- Leveticus..... I'm glad in a way that I could not attend now, this rubbish makes me sick and personally from my point of view some people might want to reevaluate why they play this game in the first place.
Paul good luck with the event, and I hope everything else works out smoothly for you with the event than it has so far. -------------------- "As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. Perhaps you two need to actually read what has been posted? The most antagonistic participant in the thread is actually Luke.

A couple of comments after reading this thread.
I know Paul put some work into the Death World effects and was probably expecting a different reaction. And I know the players have put some work into getting their armies ready and were probably not expecting the Death World effects. I can see the point of view that Paul was trying to make things fun. And I can see the perspective that some people don't consider randomness fun. The idea of whether what Paul came up with was "balanced", I will leave to more experienced players. But can we all please agree on one thing. This weekend, we are going to a tournament to have fun. So for the sake of everyone involved, can we try to put this behind us and enjoy this weekend. Because I don't mind what the rules are and where I come in the standings on Sunday, I'm going to try and make sure at every game I play, my opponent and I enjoy the game. And that folks is the only reason I'm going. Cause if it's not fun, that's not a great way to spend a long weekend. Finally, while I can see both sides of this debate, I want to say thanks to Paul for all the work in organising the event. It's going to be my first big 40K event, and I am looking forward to the two days. Cheers |

I agree with VD's comments. The TO is putting their time and effort in so that others can have fun. Thank you Paul.
Using environmental effects is in the spirit of the game. Using missions other then the BRB missions is in the spirit of the game and also in line with previous Pheno / Wintercon tournaments. Having something different and challenging would be fun. I'm sorry to see it being an issue for some. I think effects add another dimension to the game. Having most of my force outside transports there are some effects that could go badly, but there are ways to mitigate the effects if you think about it. Do I reserve units at risk, or will I get better value out of their firepower early in the game? Shall I spend a turn to shuffle units in transports, or is the probability of the effect having a significant impact so small that I am better just ignoring it? I also think that people are being over-reactive. Take ground collapse - which seems to be the most at issue. One chance in six each turn, so there is a good chance it will happen once. Even at I2 the probability of losing 4 models is less than 1 in 5. If you keep your units > 2" apart then the max you can lose is one unit. Yes you can lose an important model, but the scenarios do have balances. The chances of my librarian dying from brain eaters during the game would be pretty good, but that means I have to make sure that there is nothing critical depending on him. In 40K you are subject to the luck of the dice and you design your force to be resilient. Yes you can have a bad experience because you lost a game due to a bad roll on the environmental effects table. You could also lose by rolling 1's for terminator saves or terrain immobilisation tests at the wrong time. Or having your Ld 10 commander failing morale at the wrong moment. Has happened to me more than once - has also happened to my opponents. Regardless of the missions we play I still hope everyone is there to have fun on the weekend and gives the TO their full support. -------------------- See the Emperor's Glory! Looking forward to this, Deathworld effects or not. Despite some preliminary whining I'm sure everyone will be appreciative once the tournament spirit kicks in.

Would anyone be interested in an opt-in system for Deathworld? Play the rules for the game if both players have opted for the extra rules?

After discussing the death world effects with EPIC management, I am sorry to announce that you will all have to "Use your Imagination" about applying the effects.
While we might have been able to turn the fire suppression system on for rain (if it was needed etc), the idea of driving the forklift past tables each game to simulate the earth tremors, as well as reversing the air con to suck out all the air, have been blocked. I used to run games at Kippax many years ago, and would have loved some of these ideas for my games. They sound fun. (Deadly, but fun.) Hope everyone is nice and rugged up for a start on Saturday. Doors will open to TOs and Traders from 8:00, with gamers allowed in from 8:30ish (Same as at Cancon.) Bring some spare change for the RSPCA who shall be at the convention, as well as for the canteen and traders. See you all Saturday (Anyone who wants to help set up tables, pop in any time from Midday Friday.) -------------------- Tim Sleigh

I'll keep this short as I'm on my phone. First up, Paul - props for having the balls to try something new to freshen up the game. I'd like to see something similar in a future tourney. My main suggestion though would be to modify the table to remove any effect that is based on modeling choices or biased against certain codices due to rolls on stat lines. I'd suggest sticking to things that universally effect models in or out of terrain, modify the lightning effect to target the unit who is on the highest terrain feature rather than the tallest model, and have effects targeting units from specific sections of the force org chart. Ie roll for each heavy support choice in the force org chart. On a 1 or a 2 it's hit by blah number of Sblah shots at ap blah.
By removing a rules potential to be biased against particular unit types rather than force org choices I think you'd better meet your intent of encouraging highly flexible lists (specifically avoiding a subjective term like balanced) in a no comp environment. See you this weekend. -------------------- Blood for the Greater Good!! Err hold on a sec.....

Perhaps you two need to actually read what has been posted? The most antagonistic participant in the thread is actually Luke. Antagonistic? HA!, I Wish I could have told you what I really thought.... Now here IS an ironic story. Ben here seems to not like the balance/fairness and lack of notice give for these misisons. Fair enough. Lets wind back time to stouthammer last year. I advertise im playing daemons and grudge you. You without telling me, go about getting a GK army after accepting the grudge and knowing my army which ill add was either not bought and definetly not painted, ready for stouthammer. you dont tell me you are doing this and you choose the worst "balanced" matchup possible and above all, you dont tell me about it. lets pretend this was a "funny/in the spirit of the game" manouver, I never attempted to force you to change your list because "it was not balanced and I had no notification". what a laugh. |

For the record, I never said these rules were/were not balanced. I merely strongly believe all TOs deserve MUCH more respect than was displayed in this thread. I fully admit to being quite animated in the defence I what I believed was poor behaviour.
I do apologise, I should have just let it go. |

I suggest you go back and read the pm conversation we had before Stout. Especially the one where I said I was taking Grey Knights.
