BOMB ALLEY: PART TWO

Part of this batrep is missing a few pics which I haven't been able to locate in my photo archives. Apologies. The conclusion, Part III, will reveal the climax and outcomes.

=============================================

IPB Image
Photo S321 - Situation with the advanced German fighter escort. Part of Rotte 4 has detoured far to the north east and are returning to join Rotte 3 who are seizing the opportunity to attack the dispersed Yellow flight who were accidentally fired upon by their own ack-ack guns.

IPB Image
Photo S324 - Situation showing Yellow flight and the threat it is about to face from the enemy.

IPB Image
Photo S325 - The texted photo version of what has just preceded in the two earlier photos. A broader view showing the scene just east of the port town looking south (Allied view).

IPB Image
Photo S327 - Similar view looking south closer to the port town.

=============================================
Missing photos so batrep now resumes at S350.
=============================================

IPB Image
Photo S350 - Game Turn 4. Overview from German side looking westward. German success noted.

IPB Image
Photo S351 - Plight of Red flight (Hurricanes). Down a plane, the remaining two Hurricanes nonetheless continue their seemingly forlorn attempt to down some Jerries. But they quickly come under the scrutiny of Rotte 3.

IPB Image
Photo S352 - The port town showing the layout and one gold star (a German target). Town Hall or Military HQ? I can't recall. Along with this target, the port quay (with the two docked freighters) is also a gold star target. Plenty for the Germans to target.

IPB Image
Photo S353 - Meanwhile back over the English Channel, Red flight target a Kette of Dornier 17s.

IPB Image
Photo S354 - A dogfight is developing north of the port town.

IPB Image
Photo S355 - Likewise a situation is developing over the Channel.

IPB Image
Photo S356 - The other half of Rotte 4 is chasing ghosts in the form of the unspotted White flight who are too late to prevent destruction of the radar station and therefore steers towards the port town to see if it can assist.

IPB Image
Photo S357 - The previous photo showing Red flight sandwiched between German bombers and fighter escort might seem dire for the English but fortunes change quickly as evidenced in the above photo.

IPB Image
Photo S359 - The bomber slip past the English Hurricanes as their comrades (the fighters) do the muddle dance. The English failed to activate to prevent the bombers eluding them but are grateful the fighters got themselves in a conventional twist. Still...opportunity lost by all involved to do some serious shootings!

IPB Image
Photo S360 - Back at the port, two of the German bombers manage to dump a load on the port quay causing some minor damage. Meanwhile the remaining two bombers head for the target in the port town itself.

IPB Image
Photo S361 - The Rotte flight leader misses his chance to tackle White flight as they and the lone Red flight plane race to assist the defenders in the port town.

IPB Image
Photo S362 - A very good example of when things go wrong, they go wrong badly. Rotte 3 tries to engage Red flight. But this is their best effort!

IPB Image
Photo S363 - Two of the Ju-88s head for home having expended their pay loads on the slightly damaged port quay. Yet more bombers are on their way. At the moment, it's not looking good for the English defenders in that particular area.

IPB Image
Photo S364 - The same area but further north and inland. Congested at the moment and not a little confusing to either side.

IPB Image
Photo S366 - Rotte 1 now enters the contest although at the moment it is confusing for the Allied reporter who mistakes the enemy planes now identified as Spitfires as White flight?

IPB Image
Photo S367 - Over the water, Red flight is not yet fully engaged with Rotte 3 who are desperately trying to corral their opponents so they can attack from all sides. But the Hurricanes pilots are doing well at eluding their more maneouvrable opponents.

IPB Image
Photo S368 - In previous post, I reported 4 Rottes. Well, I stand corrected in that one of those Rottes is actually a flight of Italian Folgore fighters on loan to the Luftwaffe. They have joined the attack on the port town.

END OF PART TWO armata_PDT_34.gif

BOMB ALLEY: PART III

Conclusion to the scenario which was played with a set number of turns.

IPB Image
Photo S369 - What remains of the split rotte 4 attempts to tag onto some enemy planes...

IPB Image
Photo S371 - ...but the Allies quickly latch onto the tails of two German bombers leaving the fighters to watch helplessly.

IPB Image
Photo S371 - Elsewhere one of the Hurricanes happens to stray into LOS of the German Dorniers. But surprisingly, both planes fail to score any hits. Lucky Hurricane!

IPB Image
Photo S373 - A pair of Messerschmidts on the prowl.

IPB Image
Photo S374 - Red flight seems to be having fun evading the Germans pursuing them.

IPB Image
Photo S375 - Freighters decide to leave the quay because it's suddenly attracting a lot of deadly attention.

IPB Image
Photo S376 - Meanwhile, above the sky over the town...

IPB Image
Photo S377 - White flight (Spitfires) safely climb above the attentions of the oncoming ME-109s without incident.

IPB Image
Photo S378 - The port AA guns finally score hits on this particular bomber flight, destroying one mid-air and causing a fire on the other.

IPB Image
Photo S379 - The other half of the kette manages to evade the heavy enemy flak fire without mishap and turn for home.

IPB Image
Photo S381 - The damaged bomber is descending towards the water. It's already at Alt band 2. The fire is still raging causing it problems with flight.

IPB Image
Photo S382 - One of the Stuka still has a bomb left. With the radar station already destroyed, permission is given to take out the nearby flak gun.

IPB Image
Photo S383 - Blue flight (Spitfires) has attacked a pair of Ju-88s. One cops severe damage (pipecleaner attached) while the other has damaged fuel line.

IPB Image
Photo S384: Overview showing the various locations of each of the individual engagements happening and described above. Here the captioned batrep photos end. But the archive photos show much more still happening to the conclusion so the next photos have just been captioned.

====================================================

IPB Image
Photo S386 - Another quick overview.

IPB Image
Photo S387 - The MS Maiden Star and MS North Star leave the harbour and make for open water and thus avoid the attentions of the newly-arrived Italian Folgore fighters.

IPB Image
Photo S388 - The benefits of formation flying against flying individually is clearly seen above.

IPB Image
Photo S390 - Not much has changed (activations being what they are). Situations can easily change in a second or two.

IPB Image
Photo S391 - Out east, the situation might seem tense but the Allied fighters here seem to have it under control despite the growing odds.

IPB Image
Photo S393 - Another overview, this time looking south east towards the port town.

IPB Image
Photo S394 - It would appear the Stuka has made an unwise choice as Red flight quickly turn up and begin tailing the unprotected fighter bomber.

IPB Image
Photo S395 - And viewed from another angle, the situation seems very precarious as more Allied planes arrive on the scene...

IPB Image
Photo S397 - But then help somehow arrives in the form of a lone ME-109E. Will he be a saviour or a handicap?

IPB Image
Photo S396 - Blue flight shoot down the bomber with the fuel line problem. It slams into the ground killing all onboard.

IPB Image
Photo S398 - The late arriving Dorniers split to tackle more targets. But is it all too late? The Italian fighters and wounded Dornier seem frozen in time as they repeatedly fail activations!

IPB Image
Photo S399 - Game ends. Overview of the battle zone from the German side looking north-east.

IPB Image
Photo S3100 - View from English side looking south-west towards the sea.

================================================
German success - Radar station destroyed and 1 fighter (Hurricane) downed.
English success - 2 Dorniers destroyed or damaged, 2 Ju-88s destroyed or damaged.

Outcome - draw.
