Haven't painted anything much recently and have never done 15mm tanks before. Thought I'd try out some new weathering tech too.
Never enough Tigers to go round:
Clapped out training school tanks:
On to the infantry and some basing tests.
They look awesome.
Tigers came out a bit dark....was using an old dodgy Aztek airbrush that struggles to do much right. I've got a new shiny one to try on the next project. Also not sure I'm doing pigments right yet...I'd hoped for a more muddy look...have to watch some more how to videos.
The Italians are all painted and ready for a flogging too! Pick a time.
NIce, what book are you using to build your force?
The Kampfgruppe Kersher PDF now it has been approved for V3. Kinda cool list and Kersher himself is pretty solid.
Side track to make a quick 1500 point mid war Panzer army for test battles. There was some talk of 3 Tigers, but I think this one might be a bit more balanced.
You have to squint so it looks like the 6 Rads have an extra pair of wheels
Just have to seal the Panthers and paint crew/add chipping/highlight the tracks/any other final bits. Yes, they should be Ds not early As.
There'll be some Panzer Pioneers to go with this lot for 1500.
Last two units for Early War Italians just about done. Just a final matt coat and some lead pencil work to do tomorrow.
Interesting to see the L3/33 tankettes beside a T-35
Knocked up a quick MC200 for air cover. I didn't have a Falco lying around.
I have no idea why the picture has decided to go vertical....it's horizontal on photobucket. Weird....
 - oh, it's back to normal. Magic.
Late war scout platoon.
Did make the StG 44s a bit loud, but I wanted them to pop on the table so it was obvious they had assault rifles.
Cool, I've nearly finished my scout platoon but they're nowhere as good.
that's an expensive unit though isn't it? With the assault rifles, I mean.
Grenadier Scouts are cheap compared to the Panzer Scouts, but yes, CV runs close to 200 pts for 4 teams + HQ. With their bonuses I figure they're a decent chance to hang around, and late game they could be useful for an objective snatch. Being able to do their own pinning makes it more likely they can assault something successfully.
Having said that I will probably paint up some rifle/mg teams as scouts too later, just so I have a cheaper alternative
Panzer scout are all MG teams so they aren't too bad and with the option for a P/faust.
Great thread with a nice mix of projects happening. Ah another FOW butterfly Zap123. Looks like your having fun, really like the MC200, airbrushed I assume but what colours did you use please.
It was quick and dirty....rattle can Panzer Gelb and then a spray of Vallejo Model Air Khaki Brown (71.024). The canopy framing was hand brushed in Vallejo Middlestone which is a very close match. The cowling oil cooler is done with an old and precious Ral Partha Copper.
I was looking at running a Kersher list myself and was wondering what you take in your list. At 1750 points I was looking at running the following:
2 x Tiger Ie
Reserve Tiger Ie
Reserve Tiger Ie
1 Tiger II
Veteran Grenadier Platoon w/2 squads, 2 Panzerschreck and 2 weapon teams
6 platoons 1750 on the dot.
Pretty close....I run two Hetzers and then the vet Grenadiers with 1 squad, 1 'Shrek and 2 weapons teams. Also 6 and 1750. I like Hetzers with Tiger Ace skills
I watched a youtube video of the DAK firing their Flak 88s while still on the transport carriage recently....and I had a spare pair of 88 parts sitting in a box......
Still rough, and phone photo under fluro lights so dodgy. I'll undercoat it tomorrow to find all the flaws
Had to scrounge up a crew including robbing a couple of loaders from my other 88 battery. Anyone got a spare 88 seated gunner or two......?
got a pic of what they look like? Will look through my box of stuff.
And here's a better picture of the project with the empty seat:
Easter Egg for me:
Remind myself I should be painting.
Semi-successful session with the spray gun. Makings of 3 different lists in there. Distraction from painting infantry
Plan for the week is to finish off 3 armies. Day two and behind schedule.....eek.
Project starting to take shape. WoT tragics like myself should recognise the bad boy in the background. Should work as a Jagdtiger proxy.
It is a 1/144 scale kit from a company called Sweet. It is very nicely engineered so can be put together in about 10 minutes. Judging by Ebay prices it may no longer be in production though.
Love to see the outcome of your airbrush adventures
Very neat gear; I've grabbed a bunch of his conversion sets. Quick and cheap postage from Germany too.
Some more units for the EW Grenadier army. Lets hope EW continues to get some play time!
Barbarossa Grenadiers/Schutzen. I'll probably finish these just in time for people to start playing late war again.
Need some inspiration for a basing scheme though.
I also gave them a mix of old and new pattern uniforms and painted Waffenfarbe on some. Silly me,
653 Schwere PanzerJager coming along slowly.
My 4th Nebelwerfer finally arrived .
Also, Tiger mutants....
Looking good. I'm been thinking of running my Sturm Tigers again.
Were they only used on the Eastern Front and defense of Germany?
I can only see them in a Totenkopf panzer list in Grey Wolf, and in two of the Nuts! lists. I think I'll try and build for the Grey Wolf one, though I'll need a bunch of PzIVs.
IRL they actually were mostly used on the Western front, so I guess that's represented by the Nuts lists.
All clean and pretty......now to coat them in mud and dust and ding them up.
I use the SturmTigers in my Security Company from the GW book. RT and having to have 3 crappy rifle team platoons isn't great BUT I do have 12 platoons! 2 RT Sturm Tigers, 8 ambushing Hezters, 4 88's and Hs 129's (you never know when and if they will show up but NO tank platoon wants to get hit by them).
I'd have thought some bombers for dealing with pesky arty parks would be a better bet. I have looked at the Sicherung company, but yeah, 3 compulsory small platoons of chump infantry doesn't look that appealing
I don't have Grey Wolf....does the Sicherung have any special rules? Always defend maybe?
No, not that I can see. The 3 infantry just get plonked on objective and the tanks do the heavy lift till the rest of the army arrive- I ALWAYS seem to get the missions with reserves/ delayed reserves.
I can change things around a bit to get 2 elephants in and Kampfgruppe the 2IC. Pretty easy to do.
I like that NO tank is safe from the Hs-129B AND I can still have a shot at arty if needed.
I drew up one with 8 platoons including a pair of Elefants, some Hetzers, Panhards and the Sturm Tigers, though I went with the Stuka D for the firepower 1+ bombs. It looks like it'd be fun to run, though Hetzers as your primary assault unit perhaps not so clever
looks like i better get out a infantry army because after wednesday night i think the cromwells are about to retire.
They ran into Kersher and his Tiger friends. To be fair, there were some pretty lopsided dice rolls going on...I rolled Rapid Fire for the King Tiger and the 2 tank Tiger platoon, while the British 25pdrs failed to even scratch paint and the Cromwells and Challengers whiffed lots of shots (even with SIF).
Actually..just remembered Ross was using a Hells Highway list. Comparing to Market Garden, he's probably doing himself out of 40 or so points....and +2 AT on the Challengers! That might have made a difference! I reckon throwing in an Achillies platoon would be a good idea. They are cheap, though only 2 shots and no SIF.
Most of my gear is packed away, so updates will be sparodic for a while. Occupied my time with a little arts and crafts action:
Afraid that is the only colour primer I had handy
Easter painting, an Ersatz Panzer platoon. Wanted to make them look old and tired, but not too messed up.
Good for LW HG too I suppose.
My Westfallen SS force I took to the Briscon event. 1625 points.
Traps teams. They either did pretty much nothing, or they killed ISUs and T70s.
I went with the cheap 105s rather than Nebs. They did deliver some decent harrassing fire, but I think I'll stick to Nebs in the future. Most of my paints are stored atm so I didn't have any red for the waffenfarbe. I'll fix that later.
They look nice Zap!
I did not get a chance for a good look at them while I was playing at Briscon.
From a distance they looked amazing though!
I went up against Al's Fallschirmjager with Von De Heyte (? spelling) and his Panzerfaust trap teams.
Those bloody trap teams chased my Churchills all over the table and ended up killing a couple of my tanks.
It was a great event! Hope to see you next time we come down from Toowoomba and get a game.
Painting has been heavily curtailed due to impending house move, but some work on 653 Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung continues.
Last of the tank teams block painted, inked and decalled. Matt coat this arvo and then weathering for the lot of them.
one of the cooler field conversions this battalions' field workshop knocked together. This is a really old BF hull I recycled and unfortunately the ink had nowhere to go on the engine grilles, so I'll brush them in after it has its matt coat.
Bergepanther mit Panzer IV turm. Another of the field conversions, this one used as a command tank. You can take it as a 2IC tank if you take the Tiger (P) command tank option.
I was happy to find the correct hull number in the right colour, though it is off a Tiger 1 so a twee large.
The PDF list gives you the option for a Panzer Recon platoon too.
Very nice. I need to do some research about weathering.
Great work on the tanks.
Got to finish getting another army ready to face the Cromwell horde....probably still too many big tanks
Some StuHs to go with the Elefants. I figure the 2IC in his souped up Bergepanther will hang out with these guys.
I tried to brush paint these and wasn't so happy with the result, so I went for a really messed up look with the weathering and added some foliage to break things up. Photo taken on a dinner plate in the kitchen
Rush finish for the 653 SchPzJgAbt gear.
HQ 1IC and 2IC tanks:
Retro edit...an Elefant:
And some Panther Ds I did for a mid war list, but covered my bases and put Lehr division markings so they can pinch hit in the 'Devils Charge' digital lists. They were hit hard and have been officially dubbed the Dagpanthers.
I lightly dusted the muzzle breaks on all these with some black pastel powder. Weirdly it is coming up pale grey in the photos....
Waiting for some bits to finish my 21st Panzer army, so a small change of direction
Mass black undercoated, then AK Olive Drab dark base and then my first attempt at colour modulation with some Olive Drab light base on upper parts of turrets and hulls. Probably most noticeable on the Super.
Minor homage to Don "Wardaddy" Collier:
Must be after the fight with the Tiger as the logs are missing from the sides.
Starting to (finally) put the finishing touches on the US armour. I find it far harder to weather than the German Dunkelgelb.
Started with the tanks - HQ and Combat platoons.
The metal gun barrels I got with the E8s were shockingly mis-aligned. I managed to replace a few with plastic ones but you can see a couple of the metal ones. If I had have filed the joins flat the barrel would have wound up rectangular in cross section. I think I might need to re-ink the engine grilles, but otherwise I think I'll stick with that.
And for a change of pace, my next project
Doing a combo French Recon/Foreign Legion army.
I already had some R35s for my Australian Divisional Cavalry, and Panhards for my Dutch, so the three projects all overlap. Not a hyper competitive French recon though as the combat slots will be full of Schneider combat cars for a bit of fun.
Started blocking the rest of the force, though still waiting for some Foreign Legion heads.
Spent some time this morning with the airbrush:
The Luchs didn't quite come out as I pictured it in my mind, but once they are detailed and weathered should look ok. Hard to make out the brown on the French but once I line them and take a decent photo it should be more apparent.
Here's the rest of the French Recon horde waiting for some brown camo splotches.
Did a bit of detail painting yesterday and gloss coated the gear I finished in anticipation of decals and washes.
This morning I converted a PSC PzIV hull I had leftover from a conversion into a wreck to go in my ruined tank workshop.
Cut out the hole for the turret and added a basic interior.
The plan is to make a Stalingrad/Berlin table, though things are progressing somewhat slowly
What colour green are you using on your French tanks. I've done mine with the sand base coat, but I really like the green base you've done. I'm hoping to have them up and ready for next week.
It's Vallejo Model Air Gunship Green. I used a sand undercoat to start the Somua and AMX, so it should work fine for you.
You seem to be powering thru your painting.
Having a dedicated room and the airbrush permanently set up helps massively! No more setting up on the dining table then packing everything away each night.
Good enough for the table.
Second batch of French.
Working on some more German stuff next. Started blocking them out while waiting for the matt varnish to dry on the all the French armoured cars.
Awesome work there mate!
I just picked an airbrush through Gav at Irresistible Force and am still learning the basics.
Did you lower the air pressure when painting the camo on the German tanks?
Yeah, I drop the pressure down pretty low and only open the needle up about two turns. I still need to do a bit more practice so I can regulate the amount I pull back on the trigger consistently, so keeping the opening really narrow stops me from getting too much paint flowing.
I do need to get down and do one of Gavs' tutorials!
The last of the current batch of French vehicles after the second matt coat. just some metallics and some touch ups to go.
Next army to finish. Successfully tracked down enough Porsche turrets so I can do either Panzer Ausbildungs Abteilung 500, or 510 Schwere Panzer Abteilung
Though I'm contemplating swapping out a pair of Porches for 3 Panthers with tank riders for the Replacement School list. I have one other, non-zimmerit, King Tiger to build, and a really old Henschell turret version already painted, so I could potentially do a 4 platoon 1750 army with 7 King Tigers from DM, or a 6 platoon list with 6 Henschell's from Remagen.
Mini side project while I'm blocking out the latest additions to the French. Just doing up some extra bits so I can use my Barbarossa Grenadiers in mid war too. Looted KV-1e in progress...next is a matt coat, detail paint and a little bit more dusting up.
Some rifle scouts. Waiting for a matt coat. I did experiment with adding some foliage to the soldiers but it looked kinda hokey. Might ding up their helmets a bit and call it.
Just need to paint up some 20mm flak and I'll have another mid war army ready
What are you using to make the mud on the infantry bases?
I will try dropping the pressure on my brush as well. Thanks for confirming it for me
I am keen to get to one of Gav's paint classes as well. One day soon I hope.
Couple of things....after I glue the figures to the base I use good old Polyfilla to hide the step up to the figure. Once that is dry I use Tamiya Soil Effect to fill in any flat areas and give a bit extra texture. Here's what they end up looking like:
Looks pretty messy before the undercoat
The looted KV-1e. With that finished and the rifle scouts I can now play Grens in mid war.
Couple of Jadgtigers for my Westfallen army. I've run KTs previously but I think the breakthrough gun will come in handy.
And finished my Sturm Tigers. Just need to paint up 11 PzIVs to use these with
I'm back in Aust on Wednesday. Did you want a game the following Wednesday?
Yeah, should be fine. I'll touch base closer to the day.
I don't on here often and comment even less, Zap but I have to say your EW French are simply gorgeous. Can't wait to see em on the table.
Or not, because I know how good an army it is.
Just wanted to say good work mate, I think you've nailed them especially.
Thanks Garry, nice of you to say. Very happy to bring them out so you can show me how to play them properly
I can fill up all the combat platoon slots with the P-16s if you like....probably not as frightening or effective as a Panhorde appears to be!
Six Stugs, stat!
Worked out last night I needed six Stugs for an army for next week. At 7:30pm last night these were on the sprue.
Getting closer. Still some mud to be splashed and some dust to be added, and maybe foliage.
Start of my Team Yankee East Germans. I'll use PT-76s as proxies for scout BMP-1s, but the ZSUs are a temporary stand in until Shilkas/Gophers are available.
Just block painted so far. The camo scheme should have a harder edge but I don't think I have enough blu-tac to mask that many tanks, and I'm in a hurry.
The StuG's look amazing!!!
What did you use for the riders?
Trying hard not to think about the Team Yankee releases but this makes it harder

While you are at it. Which paints are you using? I am still practicing with my airbrush
They are Battlefront Begleit Assault infantry. Nice enough though some of the helmets look a little on the large side, but they do sit nicely on the back of a Stug. I think I may have added one or two figures from other blisters for variety. I did forget to weight the Stugs in my rush though. so now they're top heavy
On paints, mostly Vallejo Air, but increasingly I'm using the AK Interactive stuff. The Stugs were all Vallejo, though the TY stuff is painted with colours from the AK Interactive Russian Armour set (1). I like the AK stuff as you can shoot straight from the bottle and the airbrush almost never clogs. I did all 20 odd tanks in a 3 colour scheme in one sitting without stripping the airbrush once.
Due to demand I'm slapping together a quick Soviet army. I own a motley collection of T-34s and such I picked up in 3 or 4 lots over time, put together here to resemble a rag tag unit of tanks from the repair centre, along with some assault guns for support.
There's a couple of Obr 1941s, one 1941 up-armoured, and some 1942 patterns. There are a couple of 57mm guns modelled, though the difference is hard to pick. I also have a box of the plastic T-34s I will put together later for the obligatory tank horde.
good work Zap, you really motor when you put your mind to it.
Long time between completions....too many projects I suspect. First to complete should be the last bits for a MW Soviet tankovy with assault gun friends:
(also a couple of new toys for the Germans)
Some reinforcements for the US to try and deal with the panzer horde:
And the French extras I was supposed to have finished. The cancelled EW tournament took a bit of urgency away I suppose.
I had intended to be painting Japanese by now
All but finished the last of the French recon additions. Just need to scribble in some number plates and add the odd chip here and there.
Also finished the new toys for my Sov mid-war "army in a box" force.
I chipped these, washed them, added mud effects and a crap-ton of pigments....and most of it is lost when you add the final matt coat. More research required.
Some Tirailleurs to give the French some boots on the ground:
And a battery of the versatile 75s to back them up:
Anyone know a good site where I can download and print teensy tiny maps?
Finished the last items for the French Recon Squadron and the Combat Company lists.
The 105s for some inexpensive but hard hitting arty that can also pitch in with some smoke.
The Char B1 bis for the core of the Combat Company list.
I still have a HQ and second platoon to run the French as a Tirailleur infantry company, and more gear to make them a Foreign Legion force, but I think I'll complete some German stuff for a while and come back to that.
May is German month
Decalled, inked and first matte coat. Some detail paint for stowage and crew, then weathering and seal with a proper matte finish to come.
After that I have a new LW German army to finish building and painting.
A baking tray of tanks:
Just need the final pencil work on the cables, tracks and tools and I can stick a fork in these. Then back to some more EW Australians.
Finished the paper work.
510 Schwere Panzer Abteilung:
Presto chango converts to Panzer Ausbildungs Abteilung 500:
Some old daggy Jadgpanthers I picked up in a trade tarted up a bit. Probably try these in a crazy 654 Nordwind list:
Beat up training school Tiger:
Just need to finish two platoons of Volksturm to go with this lot.
I am moving to mid war now, cromwells have been retired.
Dust off your Stuarts and play them early war......for that Cromwell experience
2 Full (early release) Potecknov's Bears (total of 20 T-72, 4 Mi-24, plus cards/template etc)
3 Boxes BMP-1/BMP2 (15 total)
2 Academy SU-25 Frogfoot
Bonus objective set
AK Interactive Russian Colours Set.
ZSU-23-2 battery (3)
Gaz-469 Recoilless Rifle platoon (3)
VDV Tank Rider figures (8)
Tanks are built as early T-72s with no grenade launchers or rubber skirts. Turret front filled and exhaust pipe given bottom plate. 13 are painted in Sov three colour camo airbrushed over black undercoat, with the other 7 solid green. I used the AK interactive Modern Russian Colours set. AA MGs have been left off for ease of painting, to be added later. I also used good BF metal tank crewmen instead of the massively oversized plastic ones that came with the kits. One BMP has been built and airbrushed in solid green. All tanks have their turrets magnetised.
Hinds have their fuselages assembled and basic filling done and are ready for airbrushing before adding weapons stores etc. One SU-25 is also assembled to the same stage.
Have kept all sprues including for the built tanks.
Finishing up some Volksturm to protect the King Tigers:
Just need to decide if I should fully embrace the madness and paint their armbands!
They also form the core of a Berlin Kampfgruppe with some extra goodies:
Now if only those dang Wanze would turn up in stock.
Some more reinforcements for the Germans. I will complete the Lehr Panzergrenadiers one day.....
Need to paint the tools and crew, and dusty them up a bit before the final matte coat.
Looking good. Love the French stuff. What colour green are you using for them?
Vallejo Air Gunship Green.
Gorgeous work Zap. Can't wait to see what you put together for Red October tournament this year. You're a great painter.
Some stuff I had in a drawer.
And Battlefront painting guide for reference.
Which look ok, except the horses not so much.
Extracted digit and started finish up things that have been hanging out on the paint table too long.
Panzer IV Hs
And some recce for the Panzer Lehr lists:
And with the more useful turret....
Nice effort Bruce.
Wish I had a paint table! Nice as usual....
Some NBW40s for my early war German grenadiers. I doubt I'll ever field 6 but Battlefront sold them in threes, and platoons were multiples of 2......
Next lot freshly decaled. Still a ways to go here before they are finished.
And testing some gear for the Foreign Legion. Doing some repairs on the self propelled AA. Not sure they'll get a run too often but they look cute. The AC is the closest thing I've found to a Laffly 50 AM for the Vichy.....
A Kittyhawk for the Australians:
And some extreme tank hunters:
I tried cutting out a couple of steps to speed things up....decals got a bit washed out by the matte varnish.
I was listening to one of the WWPD podcasts on version 4, and literally as I was finishing this airbush coat they started talking about how light tanks are being nerfed........
Had to move some paints into the house to get anything done over the weekend. These are waiting for a slightly less humid time for the final matte coat.
That's the Zvezda Ferdinand. Pretty decent match dimensionally to my BF Elefants, though the Zvezda model is a bit lower and narrower.
Older photo, but nicely atmospheric.
Nice work. It's nifty reading through the whole thread and watching the airbrushing improve.
Danke! Of course, I bury the failures
But have you finished the West Germans yet?
Catching up while de-Debbieing the pool.
Cavalry company. Just need to paint some crew and do the final 2B work on the tools and chips.
Got around to finishing the Super. Hopefully get to use it in a V3 game or two.
Looking at the photos of this beast, the only markings seemed to be a roughly painted A on the mantlet cover and a 2 on the left side of the spaced armour, so I handpainted them to get the messy look.
I thought the Germans only ever made the one prototype Stugg4 ?
And it never went into production.
I think WMD might be referring to the PzIV/70 (A) in the pictures above? According to Wikipeadia, 278 of the PzIV/70 (A) model were built, 930 of the 70(V), and around 780 of the JgPzIV with the L/48 gun.
Great stuff there zap especially your French. I've had a whole 1500 to 2000 point army waiting to be painted for several years but have not had the intestinal fortitude to paint them.😔
Looks like Photobucket has extended a very rigid middle digit to us all. "Just subscribe to restore all your embedded links....only $400 US, per year." Fwits.
I'll just say: Yes! ###### Photobucket! However, to me it seems like I still have viewable embedded pics that are on their servers.
Shame about the photos dissappearing
