Hi all,

I’d like to officially open applications and invite anyone interested in representing Team New Zealand at the 9th Age ETC event in Luxembourg. The event will be held on 7-9 August 2020. Attending ETC is a big time (practice, events etc.) and financial commitment so please consider that when applying. The minimum time commitment in Luxembourg is from the 5th to the 10th of August to allow for practice and team bonding. There is also an expectation around regular practice games both on the tabletop and on Universal battle 2 (UB) with team practice rounds both internally and externally against other teams/players. As well as a regularly scheduled team meeting via Skype or a similar platform (at this stage this will be monthly/bi-monthly)

I have included a questionnaire below as part of the application process for the 2020 team selection, please answer these questions with as much relevant details as possible as this questionnaire will be a vital part in assisting the selection committee in determining the 2020 team members.

The 2020 ETC team will compose of the following components:
-1 playing captain (Jack Blanche)
-1 playing Vice Captain (David Meachen)
-6 playing team members
-up to 2 non-playing coach positions

To assist in selecting the team for 2020, a 5 person selection committee has been formed comprising Jack Blanche, David Meachen, James brown, Isaac Alexander and Ethan Philips. All 5 are past or present team NZ ETC members, with 3 past and present NZ captains also residing on the panel.

ETC 2020 aspirations, Team NZ has won Best Sports at ETC 2 out of the last 3 years. We have made a lot of friends and our No1. Priority is to try and regain that title. We would like to win the bledisloe practice round against the Australian ETC team for the first time since its inception in 2018. We are also coming off our best finish in the top half in 2019 finishing 11th, This year we want to once again try and push for a top 10 finish. That comes with higher expectations around play & lists while still being great guys to play. I think It is totally within our grasp so if you want to be a part of that read on!

The questionnaire is as follows

1) Name, age and contact information (e.g. email, Facebook link, 9th Age forum name, etc.) including, where are you currently located and do you hold a NZ passport?

2) How many armies do you play regularly to a tournament standard and which of these do you feel you can play to a ETC standard? What's your top 3 armies ?

3) What is your preferred style? (mixed, aggressive, defensive, gun line etc) Are you prepared to play an army designed for draws or other tactics that do not match your preferred style? And are you prepared to take a list that is designed for you?

4) How many practice games will you expect to have and how many competitive tournaments of a decent size do think you will attend from now? How many did you attend last year?

5) NZ teams have always in the past represented NZ with integrity and honor. Of course we want to be playing well, but most importantly playing fairly and ensuring a competitive yet friendly game for all involved. Winning the tournament but coming away with a reputation for dodgy playing or as a team of salty dicks that people don’t want to play again will not be acceptable. The potential language barriers can heighten these factors and miscommunications can be common if your not careful and clear in your games. Again, it’s the ETC, there is a good chance for misunderstandings due to language barriers as English isn’t always the first language of most teams or in some cases in the past even cheating has occurred on rare occasions. (intentional or otherwise) How do you feel you would be able to deal with these situations and remain a positive ambassador for team NZ and uphold the team values?

6) Can we have a brief war-gaming experience profile from you, including what you see as your personal best achievements in war-gaming. Any major tournament wins , teams tournament experience, etc?

7) What do you think you can bring to the team?

8) What 9th age experience do you have to date?

9) If you are not selected in the team, would you be willing to accompany the team as a non-playing coach?

10) If you are not selected in the team initially or as a coach, would you be willing to join the extended team? This would include you being part of training, list preparation etc in the same capacity as those selected and be available for selection in the event there is a sudden drop out from the team?

11) What else would you like to add in support of your application?

Applications will be open until 11.59pm Australian Eastern Standard time Sunday 3rd of November and should be sent to Jack.blanche@hotmail.com with your name and team NZ ETC 2020 application as the subject. The final team is expected to be officially announced no later then 1 week after applications close.

Regards Jack blanche and David Meachen.
