So, I'm thinking of adding some Rough Riders to my IG army after coming across these babies:
Legs

I'm thinking a full ten man squad to factor in a few losses to overwatch on the charge and to make sure they do some damage too.

Does anybody run them with any special weapons in place of the hunting lance? Is it worth it? Does anybody run squads less than 10 models?

Also, if I'm reading the rules/FAQ right, they get a Hammer of Wrath attack on the charge, and then get to use their hunting lances at I5. Is this right?

Rough Riders are pretty damn good, until their first round of combat ends, after that, not so good.

put 2 melta guns in the unit. they shoot on the way in and die from any overwatch wounds. and yes, hammer of wrath at I10 followed up by their lance attacks.

the biggest draw back to rough riders is they used to sit in reserve and then come on and hopefully smash something. they now have to be on the table for a turn, so keeping them alive and in a decent counter attack position is going to be difficult.

Unfortunately not mate. Wife gave birth to our second 10 days ago, so I've had no time for hobby at all. Will certainly aim for next year however. And there are always comps Trip runs down at Good Games throughout the year, that should hopefully give me a chance to play part of it.

Likewise, after seeing a small part of your DKoK late last year, I'll have to find a chance to see the full 1850 pts at some point.

Is this the bit however where I admit that my riders will be on Cold Ones (original, I know)....

The way I tend to find them is I shoot at them as soon as they become threatening, for the most part I can ignore them.

Priority targets are tanks and units that threaten my good stuff but I will generally ignore them they aren't first turn priority or anything but I will shoot at them and they don't live cos cover is hard to keep for them and too easy to see most of the time!

Besides even if I do shoot them early I won't use my big guns to take them out!

I'm running 10 of them in my DKOK army. they are not the greatest unit on the table for reasons outlined above (although throwing in 2 meltas increases the threat level), but they are a comp sponge and are great looking units. 10 of the FW ones all ranked up looks pretty mean and is good for painting scores.

Stick Mogul Kamir in there, rage and fearless make them better and he is pretty bad ass.

+1

He actually makes the unit quite good. fearless plus an additional attack over the normal bonus on the charge makes those lances quite devistating especially with furious charge. I would probably keep a couple of flamers in the unit for mopping up after the initial charge. remember with furious charge and rage they still ahve 3 str 4 attacks plus hammer of wrath each on the charge so 10 even without lances generates 40 attack with mogul khan and against something like orks that will decimate them.

Crynn

It'll decimate marines too, even without the power weapons.

I just tried these out the other day. One unit of 10 with Mogul Kamir and two flamers. They managed to wipe out a unit of chaos raptors so I was pretty impressed.

Really fragile though. Toughness 'E' and less opportunities for cover means they die as soon as something looks at them.

Good find with the leg pieces. I might pick some up myself.

So how is it good for painting scores? I have ten painted ready to go and I am always looking for ways to improve my painting score mate.

Are you using the DKOK models? Because the DKOK riders are sexy as ######. If they don't make your army look better, nothing will.

Everything in my DKOK army is FW Krieg including the Death riders Commisar as well ( one of my fav modeLs )
Thudd guns, Assault drill and tractors love all the Krieg models from FW and I'm looking forward to IA 12 which is full of Krieg and Necrons, can't wait to get my hands on that book mate.

Glad I wasn't the only one here who wanted to say 'neigh'.

I actually like them though, they potentially add a nice counter-charge element to gun lines.

Good for painting score in that they are big models, very visually impressive (sexy as ###### as mentioned above) and not often seen. Also a good way to break up the feldgrau hordes with some more colour. I use the Games day Mounted Commissar as their seargent too, which is a beautiful model and really stands out on the table. 10 of them look like "centrepiece models" when on the display board, even though they dont reflect that in their in-game performance. For 110 points I'll wear that for the bonus to soft scores (comp for being weak and rarely seen plus the reasons outlined above).

That's the thing, they are half decent, but they also take up a slot that has a nicer option...
