In the olympic spirit at the moment, but of course i mean who is the best special character for under 400 points? Keen to get your thoughts on this.
With the proliferation of 1600pt tourneys in canberra lately (davecons and war cry) the question has arisen whenther to include a special character in the lists that allow them, or to stick with the solid tried and tesed characer builds. Personally, i'm tossing up between orcs (grimgor or gorbad for their bonuses to black orcs in grimgors case or to the army or gorbads), drycha (for a forest spirit themed army that teleports around the table), hellebron (though dropping a level 4, having witch elves as core!), slipping in someone like heinrich kemmler, or one of the chaos special characters... I know the last discussion about special characters mentioned a lot aboiut teclis, but what about the minows for under 400pt!? |

The Orc characters wouldn't even come close... Grimgor is OK, but his black orcs die in droves. Gorbad dies instantly if your unit flees in combat. I would say Tyrion is one heck of a special character for 400 points, but Throgg would be the best point for point value for money.

The masque is amazing value, especially when combined with the -2 leadership banner

Isabelle von carstien used to be amazing when she was 95 points. Not so much now.
Krell is not too bad for 205 points. 4W, T5. Throgg is amazing for 175. Being both a general / bsb for trolls and ogres. The high elf guy isnt too bad either. I forget what he is called though. Around 160 points. -------------------- DND = do not disturb I always play this especially while fapping. Anthony Z: "I don't understand why you take morale tests from dangerous terrain. Konrad von Karstien used to be when I death starred him in a unit with the bsb, with Drakenhoff banner.
Kurt Hellborg is good for combat res. Mannfred the acolyte is a good hero alternative to running a magic vampire lord. I love Throgg, I made him out of a LOTR cave troll, Daemon prince, Spawn and river Troll bits. Wulfrik the wanderer is a good choice for chaos armies running sorceror lords. Karl Franz on warhorse, teamed with a warrior priest/reiksguard deathstar. these are just from the armies I run. |

Since the conversation has been sidetracked to discuss choices in context of armies...
I'd nominate Arkhan. Not only is he a lvl 5 wizard, but he's the only way for Tomb Kings to dodge the lore of Nehekhara. Str/Toughness 5 on a wizard lord is nothing to scoff at either. |

Throgg without a doubt, Id pay double his cost and he'd still fit into 400pts. Who else can just unleash 3D6 S5 ignoring armour hits in a single round of combat, let alone his amazing stats? Compare his stats to an OK Firebelly and tell me he's not OP. 2nd best special character behind Teclis.

Agreed about Isabella von Carsten losing her appeal. Mannfred the acolyte was mentioned - he can dish it out but can't take it.. Fair points made about the orcs too - just chop the units down from around them.. The masque coupled with the -2Ld banner - bent!!
I also own dark elves, but they seem to struggle in the special character department. All too expensive for what they do. I once ran throgg, but his unit somehow ended up getting smacked by a horde of fanatics (last edition empire) with rerolls to hit and the augment giving +1 to hit and flaming... Wasn't the best, but I feel he didn't get a good enough run so will have to use him again!! Does anyone worry about his unit being only T4 and I1, and vulnerable with all the flaming out there these days?! What about festus the leechlord? Gives chaos warriors poison and regen on a 5+, definitely less risk of HIS unit getting belted... |

Calhedryn or w/e his name is for HE has to come close.
D3 wounds, rerolls to hit mostly, causes fear and gets a 4+ ward save for under 200 points. And he only counts as a hero is points allocation. Masque would be up there. My favorite SC's are the ones with a good niche that can't otherwise be filled. The Scarab Prince from TK comes to mind. I love those sort of fluffy typew guys that you have NO IDEA IN HELL how would be useful, but still scream "cool". -------------------- |
