A question was asked recently about how many Samurai constitute a DR warband. Answer. Impressive!

The question of Leader/Leader unit boils down to one of definition. And interpretation of that definition. I confess I haven't fully explored the obvious debate existing in the wider world since the publication of DR.

Confusion arises when one considers that the Leader type is classified in three distinct ways:

1. Simple Member, or figurehead of a warband, much like the prow of those old sailing ships: elegantly sculptured and painted up. The Leader however in this instance is subsumed within the identity of the unit, suffering the same fate as the unit until the very end for as Leader he becomes Last Man Standing. During the existence of the unit, he contributes nothing to the combat activities of said unit apart from offering a +1 bonus to Courage tests for any friendly unit within a 12" radius. Beyond this, he becomes faceless until he is all alone confronting overwhelming odds.

2. Lone Heroic figure. One can deploy the Leader as something a bit more noticeable via basing. And distinctive basing, i.e., larger that the other figures. And a paint job suitable for someone most heroic. The single heroic figure can even be a substitute for an entire unit. The Sir Lancelot example in the rulebook is good case of this point. Any single figure of heroic proportions can be used, like Ronal the Barbarian or Daffy Duck, to satisfy this call for something splendid that will spellbound your opponent until you can get close enough to dong him one! armata_PDT_14.gif

Unfortunately the contradiction here is that the rulebook also stipulates the leader must belong to a unit. Well, he is part of a unit - HIS OWN SELF! Contradiction eliminated. Right? He is thus free to indulge in his epic glorious moment befitting his stature and fate.

3. Reduced Model Unit. Seems unfair the Leader gets to wear three different "cloaks" when prancing about the tabletop, but there you have it.

In DR the Leader is much more prominent as he should be so one admits; it is fantasy after all. As with the Lone Heroic figure, the RMU becomes an identity of its own creation. Like the Magnificent Seven the Leader survives although the same might not be said of his close escort. Oddly, once whittled down to just himself, his stature is akin to (1). But he may still possess some degree of awesomeness if wielding magical equipment or spells.

All three offer degrees of EPIC SUPREME MIGHT as one might apply to the tag of Leader. I much prefer the Leadership Skill factor though. But that's another issue for later discussion.

Because I have time, I printed out some Quest and Spell cards. I modified the original file (tidied up the spell mistakes and format). They will serve as a visual aid for those players (like myself) who continually have memory lapses. These cards will not replace the dice roll system we will be using for determining Quests however. armata_PDT_14.gif

I even took time tonight to pull out a sewing needle, some yarn, a couple of spare felt rectangles, some nylon cord, wooden beads and created for myself a couple of cheap simple pouches, sufficient for their eventual use. These are for my CE game and will hold my Damage chits.

Another Dragon Rampant session this weekend. Maybe my magic-wielding Shaman will finally get to throw some spells! smile.gif

The Winter Wonderland campaign has begun. Based on Brisbane's northside but open citywide. League is a little unique in that while there is both a competitive (game)and rivalry (comparing how you fare against one another to reach a common aim) element, it is mainly about growth and development of your warband. Hope to expand the concept to other centres with the culmination in some form of annual Dragon Rampant championship event featuring top players from each centre. But that's for future.

Right now, first game is in two weeks. Simon' Goblins will face-off against my Beastie Boyz. Will post batrep when due. Cheers.

Game this weekend (last-minute change) will be a scenario game: Scenario E: The Ringbearer from the rulebook. No pre-set terrain but we will test out the terrain placement idea from Simon (drawn from his years of playing Warhammer). Modified to our campaign needs.

Schedule is out and the next game will also be a scenario from the book -- F: Pot Boiler. This one looks dear to my stomach. armata_PDT_34.gif

Scheduled game did not pan out as there was a third today. So we had a free-for-all by way of introduction instead.

Dwarves (9) vs Night Goblins (11) vs Beastmen (10). Starting deployment in the corners.

Terrain was diced for and presented an interesting table. Dwarves were deployed behind a fordable stream. The Beastmen emerged from a swamp and woods. The Night Goblins appeared from behind a hill.

With the stream to delay them, the Dwarves took a while to cross over. By far the most copious of warbands with seven units, the Night Goblins could only advance and spread out. The hill was quickly occupied as the Goblins continued to engage the Dwarves with accurate missile fire scoring minor success, even pushing back the "Orange Roughies" before the Dwarves were able to get something happening in reply.

Meanwhile the Beastmen warband closed in on the Night Goblins. It didn't take long for combat as the Bestigors bellowed the first challenge. While the tussle raged back and forth, the Dwarves slowly crossed over the bridge. The crossbows joined the missile meleeing and managed to force both NG scout units to retreat.

The only magic used was from the Beastmen shaman who used the Power Bolt effectively on various units of the NG. Then the Gors got involved accounting well for themselves.

The game ended when the last of the NGs was expelled from the battlefield.

Losses: the NGs were destroyed in the game. The Beastmen lost one unit. Dwarves remained intact. Thanks to Simon and Byron for the game. Rescheduled games 1 and 2 for next month.

Today in the local supermarket while collecting my shopping at the checkout a little sweet child, in passing, declared I was "big". It got me to thinking that perhaps my size and dashing good looks marked me as a descendant of one of those intrepid Viking voyagers (like that Delta Quadrant mob) that ventured further east than they were supposed to and somehow got swallowed whole into the mists of time! The more I pondered it whilst driving home in afternoon rush hour traffic among the crazy loons that pretend to call themselves drivers the more I reckoned my far-fetched hypothesis was spot-on. And thus it has inspired me to create a lost Southern Vikings (much intermingling between these Nordic gods and the local wahines of course) warband for my Dragon Rampant escapade adventures. And to lead my berserkers (or berks as they're known by admirers and foes alike) will be Lars the Latu. armata_PDT_34.gif
