A question was asked recently about how many Samurai constitute a DR warband. Answer. Impressive!

The question of Leader/Leader unit boils down to one of definition. And interpretation of that definition. I confess I haven't fully explored the obvious debate existing in the wider world since the publication of DR.

Confusion arises when one considers that the Leader type is classified in three distinct ways:

1. Simple Member, or figurehead of a warband, much like the prow of those old sailing ships: elegantly sculptured and painted up. The Leader however in this instance is subsumed within the identity of the unit, suffering the same fate as the unit until the very end for as Leader he becomes Last Man Standing. During the existence of the unit, he contributes nothing to the combat activities of said unit apart from offering a +1 bonus to Courage tests for any friendly unit within a 12" radius. Beyond this, he becomes faceless until he is all alone confronting overwhelming odds.

2. Lone Heroic figure. One can deploy the Leader as something a bit more noticeable via basing. And distinctive basing, i.e., larger that the other figures. And a paint job suitable for someone most heroic. The single heroic figure can even be a substitute for an entire unit. The Sir Lancelot example in the rulebook is good case of this point. Any single figure of heroic proportions can be used, like Ronal the Barbarian or Daffy Duck, to satisfy this call for something splendid that will spellbound your opponent until you can get close enough to dong him one! armata_PDT_14.gif

Unfortunately the contradiction here is that the rulebook also stipulates the leader must belong to a unit. Well, he is part of a unit - HIS OWN SELF! Contradiction eliminated. Right? He is thus free to indulge in his epic glorious moment befitting his stature and fate.

3. Reduced Model Unit. Seems unfair the Leader gets to wear three different "cloaks" when prancing about the tabletop, but there you have it.

In DR the Leader is much more prominent as he should be so one admits; it is fantasy after all. As with the Lone Heroic figure, the RMU becomes an identity of its own creation. Like the Magnificent Seven the Leader survives although the same might not be said of his close escort. Oddly, once whittled down to just himself, his stature is akin to (1). But he may still possess some degree of awesomeness if wielding magical equipment or spells.

All three offer degrees of EPIC SUPREME MIGHT as one might apply to the tag of Leader. I much prefer the Leadership Skill factor though. But that's another issue for later discussion.

Because I have time, I printed out some Quest and Spell cards. I modified the original file (tidied up the spell mistakes and format). They will serve as a visual aid for those players (like myself) who continually have memory lapses. These cards will not replace the dice roll system we will be using for determining Quests however. armata_PDT_14.gif

I even took time tonight to pull out a sewing needle, some yarn, a couple of spare felt rectangles, some nylon cord, wooden beads and created for myself a couple of cheap simple pouches, sufficient for their eventual use. These are for my CE game and will hold my Damage chits.

Another Dragon Rampant session this weekend. Maybe my magic-wielding Shaman will finally get to throw some spells! smile.gif
