Does anybody down there play (or is interested in playing) Kings Of War?

Was interested in learning Fantasy, but KoW looks like a lot more fun, easier to learn, and a lot cheaper/better models.
And rules are free to download from their website, and only 16 pages (includes 4 races).

I am keen to get some Undead for some fun modeling projects, but if anyone is keen to play some games then i may as well buy a heap of them. smile.gif

I have a few additions to make yet but in a few months I may have enough undeads to have a decent game.

We played our first games of Kings of War on Sunday and the verdict is:

We're hooked.

It was actually incredibly fun. We got a good understanding of the rules in less then half an hour, made lists and played a couple of 1,000 point games with the Dwarves, Abyssal Dwarves and Undead. Each game took around 30-40 minutes and was more fun then a rollercoaster (and slightly safer too)

Game mechanics are simple enough to grasp and are refreshingly different compared to fantasy's mechanics.

I think it's fair to say we'll be seeing a fair few games of this played in the not too distant future.

Would have loved to see a game being played out.

No worries Eric, Scott said you were tied up with work.
No doubt there will be many more chances for that though, it looks as though there will be a fair few games of KoW at SEBF from here on in.

We've been speculating on what to do with Frontline which we're pushing back to August, orginally we thought of making it a Fantasy event but there is talk of if there are enough players interested in KoW, we'll have a tourney of that instead, if the demand is there...

Sounds interesting.

Although Recon is looking like i might struggle to make it, will probably be harvesting (but hopefully not), so Frontline might be the only tournament i can attend in the year.

I'd be keen for a KoW tourney though. smile.gif

Well at this rate, if there are any more SEBF'ers getting into KoW and the possibility of interest from out of town, that would make a KoW tourney a near certainty.

G'day
I'm in Adelaide, but given notice I would be up for a Kings of War event.

Heya Dentwist,

Thanks for the show of interest! If we do it, it would probably be around mid August. I'm thinking I should put a post up in our tournaments section and see how much interest there is in it.

Just played a couple of games for the first time, and really enjoyed it. smile.gif
I was a little skeptical about the damage/rout system at first, but surprisingly it actually works quite well (although the rout test itself can rely a lot on luck).
We only played at 750 points, but i can imagine that games around 2000+ points would be a hell of a lot of fun.

Looks like there will be Orc rules/models released in about a month or so too.

I have heard that Elves are a little overpowered at the moment, but with a quick fix they could be balanced.

With a simple rules set and universal rules/weapons/etc, this game could be made to be almost perfectly balanced. Which would mean that TO's wouldn't have to worry about comp scores, a big plus IMO. smile.gif

Glad to hear you enjoyed it Eric, we gathered the same thing about point values, that bigger games would be where KoW really shines.

Agreed on the games balances too. We only played with Undead and both Dwarf factions and found it to be very well balanced. Haven't had any experience with Elves though, I'd hazard a guess they have a major advantage due to the stuff they have access to compared to some of the factions that haven't been around as long.

The likelihood of SEBF's August tourney being a KoW grows ever stronger.

Yeah, apparently the elves are too powerful with ranged attacks, and armies like Undead really suffer unless they spam Lich Kings and/or Necromancers to use Healer, but then they have limited use of Dark Surge.

Between the other 3 races though, things seem fairly balanced.
Although doing a comparison between the Dwarfs and the Abyssal, the Abyssal do seem to have some better options.

From what i hear though, updates will be a fairly regular thing, so any issues with unbalancing will be fixed from the feedback they receive (unlike GW.... *cough*necrons*cough*)

Well Mantic have proven very responsive to feedback thus far and I don't doubt that if they keep it that way, anything that causes too much imbalance / customer complaints will get fixed up.

Just commenting on our games, it seemed while the Abyssals had some better options, the dwarfs ended up beating them down. It was a hard fight and I think the dwarves had some solid choices in their army but it was remarkable how close the game was.

I can see how if the elves have really potent shooting that could be over kill, if a unit is close to routing after a few rounds of shooting it'd be no trouble to finish them in melee or with more shooting

Another thing i was considering for modeling purposes was only putting about 10-15 models on a movement tray that normally contains 20, and using the extra space to add in some terrain feature such as rocks and small shrubs.
The unit would still count as a unit of 20 (as it would be using the 20-model movement tray), but only have 10 or so models actually appearing on the base.

Might make them so its interchangeable (so i can put 20 on there if a tournament requires), but personally i never really liked the look of the cramped infantry.
Particularly with Zombies, doesn't make sense for them to be in tightly-packed blocks, and kills all the space for terrain.

Could also save money for someone who needed to fit in an extra unit or 2, but Mantic models are that affordable that it doesn't really matter anyway.

I think they've got great potential for unit fillers, little dioramas within the unit etc.

Rangerwolf has done some great ones for his WHFB High Elves of some corroded looking statues that archers(?) appear to be defending. Very neat.

I wish i could find a link i had before.
Mantic design their models, but they pay a company to do the injection molding for them (or at least they used to, not sure if they still do). Whatever the company is, they have a website, and they sell a couple of things under their own name.
One of the things was a sprue with a ######load of different gravestones, which would be perfect to go with the KoW undead models.
Was going to model some of the zombies bursting out of the ground in front of a gravestone, would look epic.

But sadly, i cant find the company any more. sad.gif

EDIT: Wait, found it...

Depends what it is Trent.

AFAIK as the rules stand, you have to base them on the size of the bases supplied (awkward to explain to someone who bought something that was missing a base mind you)

However this rule seems to get twisted a bit by characters being mounted on 40mm instead of 25mm and other similar examples.

Eric, that is a nice find indeed and a great idea for the Zombies too! Definately do it.
