Orktoberfest 40k Results 2009, Trying a different method... Options

I had a great time and five great games and will certainly be a return player.

I only had a few minor issues that have already been addresses, so I wont repeat them here.

If army comp is going to be a soft-score, and theme/fluff doesn't come into it,

I actually tried putting a theme mark into comp scores at the Big Weekend, earlier in the year. You know what happened? Almost every single army at the event scored full theme marks every game. There was literally only one person who consistently marked his opponent's army as not having a theme. I even had one person tell me he came up with a 'theme' on the spur of the moment, to tell opponents, just so he could get the theme marks. Sorry, but for my money, theme should not be part of any scoring, it's far too subjective.

at least have some kind of criteria to build by so players can actually get a decent score.

I guess this is my fault...as far as I knew, it was common knowledge that a balanced, well-rounded army was what was needed to get a good comp score...

I saw troop-heavy armies with lower scores than elite-heavy armies, which didn't quite make sense.

Care to provide an example?

I picked a deliberately themed list

I'm not going into detail here, but both Jason and I play very regularly against a player who fields a Deathwing army. We are quite familliar with how tough, and how fragile, an all-terminator army can be. A well-balanced army would have issues dealing with 2 Land Raiders, let alone 3. Having said that, your list did have a few weaknesses compared to the other, and I think it's Comp score of 12 is representative of that...of course, every man and his dog who posts here seems to think they know far more about army composition than any of the judges, so what do I know? Perhaps we should go back to peer comp scores, just so people with low scores won't whine at the organisers...

Well i just wanted to say thanks to all involved for a good weekend. I don't get to play many games these days and enjoyed all of my games. Could have been a bit more competetive in a couple, but i'll have to chalk that up to experience.
Also i was pretty thrilled to get players choice, as there were some nice armies there. All in all a good weekend. Will just have to get in some match practice before the next one!

thanks for the kind comments on my army Wombats. i admit to being a tiny bit peeved about the army banner thing at the time, but got over it pretty quickly. if it had been in the players pack i would have made one (if it was, then its my fault as i did not read it properly).

one of things i like about painting scores is the systems where you have more tick boxes than the max score. so the one we used at Fields of blood had 46pts available, but the max you could get was 35. this meant that if your army did not suit unit markings (daemons) or had no conversions you could get the points back in other places.

either way its a small thing, and i was pretty stoked with my 12/15.
