No practical application for gaming and probably took them all year to paint it anyway.

Figure painting: Ah. Well now. Its not a great resolution but pause the video with the dead side up and look at some of those figures. Then think about some of the figures that have won Demons or Swords in the past. Its great but...

Because there is more detail, interesting poses etc. in other companies' miniatures. If the same effort was put into a nicer miniature it would look so much better. Why don't people actually do that then?

In this case because to enter golden demon the models need to be primarily GW models


In terms of quality I think most the GW fantasy models look more static than the 40k stuff, as for other manufacturers I think that many other manufacturers models are very good and are equivalent in how good they look the main difference is the styles are very different so it comes down to personal taste.

Seriously?

I took another look and you actually think a gw model lessons the diorama? OK.

I hope we dont tread the path of I hate gw in this club section. Although I have my issues with there pricing and want to actively do something about it I am getting sooooo sik of reading all the anti gw c#$p on the aussie forums each time gw is mentioned.

I'm preeetty sure he didnt plop GW models out of the box onto the diorama. Want a dynamic GW pose? dissect and greenstuff. And as mentioned, it's for a GW comp which has leet prizes i believe (although i have no idea what those are).

Are there any similar painting comps at that level? I know some websites have them but anything with huge prizes, crowds and venue/s?

What about auscon?

I have always seen GW models as first and foremost a gaming tool

The painting can be super flashy and have a decent amount of effort put into it, but its always something for gaming.

When people go beyond that and use them for something that is only good as a display piece it sort of makes me raise an eyebrow, if you want something pretty for your shelf you can do so much better than GW models with their silly proportions and "heroic" scale weapons. GW minis might have great detail for gaming tokens but I really doubt that I will ever buy one just to paint.

Actually - that should read 'exclusively' rather than 'primarily'. See point 4.

@Zippy. Sounds like you're a gamer - cool - that's one third of what GW offer. (The remaining thirds being the conversion/painting, and the awesome fluff.) Surely other are able to enjoy these aspects of the hobby as well. smile.gif

@Junior. I'm with Baron on this one - the company has pissed me off with the recent treatment of the Australian market segment (the Mstrom/Wayland barring), but its product lines really are some of the best minis out there.

Fair enough, but perhaps the painter also likes the setting? Ok, so this diorama could be set in any Middle Age-based world, but I think it's interesting that he has brought this level of realism to such a fantastical setting. When you see a GW army on the tabletop, it is completely disconnected from reality: you don't know who each individual is, you don't know what happens when he dies. I find this diorama interesting because it lifts the lid on something that we take for granted.

Ok, so if you want to create something that is purely a piece of art, there are certainly some models out there that are better. However, I'm yet to find a miniatures game with a background setting that has captured me anywhere near as well as GW games have. If I wanted to create a piece of art and chose GW models as the basis, that would be why.

I meant primarily because they do allow conversion and scratch sculpting just not anything that has GW components
