It will be one of the last outings for my woodies (nearly got enough models to start playing with my Empire) so I'll be there for shizzle.

QUOTE(Theodore @ May 8 2009, 06:33 PM) *

Why?

Its not a system designed for the Australian Warhammer scene. Its designed for the European one. I know that they still have comp etc etc but they are much more welcoming to dodgy lists than we are. For this reason, its not suited. Also, its much, much too restrictive. It doesn't at all encourage themed lists and changes the make up of lists too much.

The timing is also bad IMO. We were just coming into a time where we were embracing the tier system (which, to me, is a godsend) and now everyone's thinking that this ETC system is fantastic, which really isn't IMO. It also makes tournies a little too serious, with everything riding on your battle scores, which isn't the way it should be in my mind.

Anyway, that was a bit of a cyclical rant. Point is, the only main reason I'd be going is because I've been starved of tournies up until now (and will be even more starved next year being in year 12) and its incredibly close by...

Fair enough.

Personally, I agree with the concept that is isn't "ideal" but I didn't find it too bad. I enjoyed closed lists and found the tournament fun.

I personally prefer Tiered comp, but I don't ever mind an option to "change things up" a little bit.

I just don't want to play too many of them lol.

Cheers,

Theo

When I was a kid we always played closed lists, so it made me feel about 12 again, but that's not a bad thing when you get to my age tongue.gif

Growing up playing warhammer in the mid-90s in the UK, there was no such thing as open list, and definately no such thing as tiered armies. Mind you, back then, it was much much more level. Sure certain armies would struggle versus certain other armies, but overall it was quite balanced to my mind.

It was an eye-opener to "discover" open list games over here.

Hey That Guy, Have you been to an ETC tournament?

I think it far from encourages over powered lists. If leviathan was anything to go by.

Remember ETC isn't being encouraged as a main stay for tournaments. I am running mine tourny ETC because I really enjoyed leviathan, and I came like 49th. I think that says something for the "oh noes everyone is going to take power" that most were worried about.

I hope you can make it along, if its successful enough this year, next year I will be running as tiered. Also just wanted out aus ETC team to have another crack at the system.

I do see the problem with some "themed" lists not able to get a run, thats the only problem there is with the sysytem IMO. But then you have to ask, why did you want 3 flying units, more then 5 WM's etc.

cheers guys, hope to see you all there. If nothing else come for 5 games of warhammer, the restrictions don't do anything to the game itself!

Do we know how many spots are left open for the tourny?

I think originally he advertised 40 spots, but the idea was that if more paid, they would upgrade to the BIG hall, which is very BIG, and would allow for a BIGGER tournament. I have no idea why I wrote BIG so much, but BIG is better.

Anyway, should be no problems arranging a ticket.

Normally you either buy of the IF website, or pay direct into the TO's bank account with your name and follow it up with a PM to advise you paid and an application form if appropriate.

You then send him via email an army list by the due date (don't forget to keep that list and bring the exact same one, with enough copies for you, and your opponents for each game).

Cheers,

-Theo

For the moment 23 people have shown their interest and 5 have already paid, this at a month of the event sounds like there will be over 50 people IMO. If I'm correct it means that the big room will be used and this year at DogCon, there was 111 players in there. So availability shouldn't be a problem I think.

Edit: Theo was quicker..... dam woodies.... wink.gif

And regarding the ETC restriction, it's something I personal enjoy.
But I recon a mix with ETC and tiered tournament is IMO a good thing, with maybe more tiered than ETC tournament because it's true that ETC restriction are making the list a bit tougher and less "themed".

Yeah, I have a thread also named PUP-CON.
http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?...c=72318&hl=

You can see all the details there, and down load the players pack as well!

I have to pay the deposit on wednesday. With 5 players paid I am going to have to book the smaller room as the difference in price of the 2 rooms is substantual!

So there lays the ball back in the players court, if you get your ticket earlier it secures your spot, gives the possibility of a large numbers tourny and all extra's are going back into prize support! Win win for you guys.

All the comments above about how bad ETC is, I totally agree with.

Having played Lev a few weeks ago I feel as if I can make more justified comments on ETC.
First point to note - it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Closed lists were in some ways fun (though I prefer open to be honest) and no problems occurred. None of the armies I faced were too overpowered, though the standard was higher. Ultimately I had fun and enjoyed it, and would do it again, so that's got to count for something.

On the flip side, I think the most negative thing about ETC is that it encourages you to take the hardest biatch army possible within the restrictions, particularly if you are a vamp or daemon player. If you are one of the mentioned players, since you are having restrictions imposed and points increased across the board, you feel as if you should take armies that Australia would never otherwise see. Same, in fact, goes for all armies across the board. My big problem with this is to do with the spirit of the game. With normal comp, tier or otherwise, people are encouraged to take lists that are "fun" - ie. not ridiculous, still competitive, perhaps something a bit different. This is what keeps us having fun I think. To turn that on its head and encourage hard lists is not so much fun.

Anyway, my quick and late 2c. Good luck to those in the tourney tomorrow, and I will definitely be going to PUPcon, if only because I love tournaments and it is placed within a good timeframe.

Cheers

PS I think gobboAlex nailed it neatly on the head when he mentioned the lack of comp scores resulting in pure battle being so dominant in the tournament. This is exacerbated by the tiny fraction of points dedicated to paint and a sports system where nearly everyone will get full marks. I like tournaments with decent proportions of soft scores, including comp, because it adds some extra elements that make the hobby more than just a board game.

good call MR roy. TBH I thought before leviathon the ETC was the worst thing that could ever happen. I went, played 5 games of wfb and enjoyed my weekend.

I definately don't think ETC is the answer to the comp problems, but it is however a different 'limited edition' flavour to try out.

Interested to see how the slaughtermasters go.
