After sitting here for 6 weeks with one blown fluro above my desk, the electricians came today and replaced the tube. 20 mins after they left it blew up again. sad.gif

Yes, I reply to a lot of threads with images. That's because your posts are crap, and don't deserve anything more than a cursory Google image search.

I put a job in SAP but it will be another month. I know what's needed but the system doesn't work that way.

I also expected spidey to be a dickbutt.

I wonder if we're seeing the beginning of the end of the university as an institution and teaching professor as a profession. It does seem horribly outdated when you can do a lot of university teaching remotely extremely effectively now.

I'd have backed shotty as being the thief.

Kids and experiments, sometimes they don't mix.

The task was simple enough, melt some phenyl salicylate on a microscope slide using a bunsen burner (about 160 degrees celcius does it) , observe the slide under a microscope as it cools and the crystals form. They look cool, the leading edge is awesome.

In retrospect I needed to tell them more than once that the bunsen flame is hot, the microscope slide is held at the far end and only enough heat is applied to melt the chemical (about a rice grain amount). Demonstrating this and saying it once wasn't enough. I should also have told them not to smoke match smoke in the lab, not to try snorting the chemical as it melts and holding the microscope slide long enough in the 800 degree bunsen flame will eventually melt both the chemical and the microscope slide.

fark.

later today, year 10 maths, measuring length and width of leaves to later plot a scattergram and work out a simple correlation using a spreadsheet. easy lesson, outside in the sun, Friday arvo, just measure some leaves...things get grim when dealing with the left end of the bell curve. Can you use a freakin' ruler !

In fairness, at the other end of the scale, spec maths students are awesome.

Oooo, embarrassed face... I remember accidentally almost blinding someone by overheating a chemical reaction in a test tube with a bunsen burner. The test tube [with chemicals] exploded in my hand, the bottom of the test tube ricocheted off the table and hit the other guy [who was egging me on] in the face.

Bad Ronny.

I blame the teacher for not realising it was a bad idea in the first place.

And for warning the students not to heat the reaction too vigorously.

Oh hey Stu, you'll be proud to know I still use the old chem dems manual you posted to me years ago, though it's looking a bit dog-eared now. Went out to St John's primary school this week for science week and did 4 demos for the entire school, busted out Midas' Touch and some Copper Complexing reactions plus the classic green fire and some other ones we do. smile.gif
