Making a list of likelies, prollies, and dream-on scenarios that the historical crowd within QGG will be poking their noses into this year.

1. Canvas Eagles. An old game that's been around the yard some; but it's all new to me and one other who's interested. First World War aerial combat old-skool. Came across this early last week whilst looking for socks! Good excuse to use my 1/72s. Can also use the WoW planes but they look so small! Rules are free and comes with all the necessary accessories one has to have to conduct gentlemanly warfare at several hundred feet with nothing but a revolver and a wicked smile.

Link - website for rules and aircraft data sheets

2. Lion Rampant. Solo campaign season 2017. New characters appear on the scene. More bandits and brigands (the Polmaine triplets are a gamble but who knows). The campaign format will be solo. If you want a copy of the campaign sheet and etc., just download the February issue of Quarterstaff. On Quarterstaff: apologies for the no-show of the November issue but outside life got in the way.

Link - batreps and campaign notes.

3. Russian Civil War. 20mm. Slow grow project. Another solo project that should be fun to field. Using three rulesets for this: Red Actions!, Red and White and Canvas Eagles. Why? Because we can.

Link - website with links to the above rulesets. Lots of useful information, especially historical scenarios, eye witness accounts, units, uniforms.

4. Napoleonics. Member of the group is arranging get-togethers for the new interest in Grand Battles, a local ruleset hoping to fill the void left by FoGN (still disappointed with this lot). He raves on about it and it's worth a look if you're interested. And Drew is a well-known and respected designer and gamer.

Should FoGN ever release the new upgrade, it might be a cause of celebration among those of us who haven't yet binned our FoGN armies or converted them into DBN v2.1 lists.

Link - website. Navigate to appropriate period. Caters for 15mm and 28mm.

5. WW2. Rapid Fire 2. Pretty much standard for half the group (the other half play the more popular systems). Varying levels of experience here ranging from dufus to sensei. Happy to show newcomers who don't mind that half step from 28mm to 15mm that is 20mm.

Link - website for RF core rules. Note: these are primarily for 20mm. Probably adaptable to other scales. But why bother when you already have FOW and BA that cater to these scales specifically? Also, not to be confused with an online version (same name and all that)
Link - airwargaming. Bag The Hun This is the blogsite that first got me involved in these rules. Excellent blogsite. Lots of pictures too. He remains an active member on the TFL forum sites.
Link - airwargaming. Check Your 6! Jet Age. For those wanting a bit more detail and complexity.
Link - naval wargaming. General Quarters III. Very enjoyable but weighty ruleset. Website is chock full of numerous quality rules. There is also an online version of the game for those with itchy thumbs.

6. Historical boardgames. Quietly trying to coax the other members to jump on board for Memoire 44. Thus far, it's been favourably received. There is also Phantom Leader, a really simple game that offers campaign mode. Useful in narrative writing, so I hear. Don't quote me though. wink.gif

Link - Phantom Leader. One of the few manufacturers that caters specifically to solo wargaming. Excellent design and graphics if costly delivery-wise. I only wish I had unlimited finances as I'd buy the whole store out!

There may talk of a historical event through the year but it currently remains that, talk. But we have the wherewithal to set one up promptly with lovely prizes and such. Wait-and-see.

The usual suspects seen on this sub forum will make appearances. Will post further historical gaming links throughout the year for those interested. No doubt the others guys within the group will have their own historical projects they're pursuing this year that they'll gladly share here. Cheers. armata_PDT_37.gif

EDIT POST: 30/1/17

Apology for the bulletin issue. Changes within the output and this format will be probably remain this way for while. Quarterstaff download link in signature. Chur!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
EDIT POST: 31/1/17

Almost completed: Czech regiment and Coloured (officers) regiment. 2 MGs. 1 Cossack unit. 6 Renault FT17s. Making a start on the Red units tomorrow. Hoping to game a couple of situations over the weekend. That's all for now. Back to the excellent bottle of Cabernet Merlot, and then onto Port. Chur!

Some of the historical guys are planning on meeting up next Saturday (11 Feb) at a vacant garage (just kidding) for some games and chinwagging. FoGN (Swedish vs Bavarians), Rapid Fire (TBA), Grand Battles (15mm), X Wing (100 points) will be played.

POST EDITED: 5 FEB 17
After due consideration, I will be running HistorX III at Orktoberfest (date is Sat, 28 Oct). And, surprise, surprise, it will be another FoGN (corps level) tournament.

At this stage, the original edition ruleset will be used unless version 2 makes its debut before Sept 1.

At this point, it will be the similar 4-game format I've used in previous events. Using the standard 6' x 4' tables. But this will be a one-dayer tournament. It will also cater to the local scene.

Perhaps the shocker for many is the scale for HistorX will be 20mm. Not 15mm. Not 28mm. Not even 25mm. But 20mm. The reason is simple: I've always wanted to run a purely 20mm event. And for those who don't have a 20mm army, there are spares. I will publish a list of what's available for those interested.

Point size to be determined. I'm considering 650 points (to allow for more games and less running time) but if the call is there, it'll be the stock-standard 800 points (a Corps of two-four divisions).

Generous prizes for attendees.

The same sort of prizes as for HistorX will be returning for HistorX 3 - Best Gentleman, Wooden Baton, Best ADC, Most Charming Moustache, and so on.

As TO, there will be no Bye Buster as I will also be playing. Cheers.

EDIT POST: 8 FEB 17

Update on FoGN 2. The rules update has been underway for some time now, although it hasn't always been obvious. The lack of information surrounding progress and development has been frustratingly sparse and infrequent.

But with the Australasian connection (Brett and Richard) now the prime movers on this project, and being given the go-ahead to make the long-awaited improvements, things are progressing nicely. They're really pushing to make publication some time this year. It's speculation at the moment (until confirmed) but the LOA (Melbourne) are having their regular FoGN event around July and the NZ crew are also hosting local events. Both groups are planning on using FoGN2.

Should that happen, and it finally hits the presses before September, it only makes sense to run our planned Orktoberfest event using FoGN2. Will keep things posted. Cheers.

EDIT POST: 10 FEB 17

A warm day beside the seaside. FoGN, Rapid Fire 2 and even Star Wars X Wing enjoyed an outing.

FoGN game. Lots of re-reading and bad guessing. Still enjoyed it and now keen to get our lists ready for the event in October.

Yep, event in October will definitely be 650 points.
=========================================
POST EDIT: 12 FEB 17
Scoring system will be modified for the event. The original points-based system tends to give a misleading impression of how close some matches are. Will keep posted.
===========================================================
FURTHER EDIT
The historical group will be meeting monthly at a member's place. No cost outlay. If you're mainly interested in playing FoGN (Nap in 15 or 20 mm), Grand Battles (also Nap in 15 or 28mm), Rapid Fire 2 (WW2 in 20mm) or Star Wars X Wing (while strictly not historical, it does count because in the crawl it states that this period occurred "A long ago time ago, in a galaxy far far away..."), please turn up. We'll post when we're next meeting.
Occasional forays into Wings of War, DBN, AWRG, boardgames, Canvas Eagles (also WW1 air), Bolt Action and Lion Rampant will also take place.
Most of us will be practising for the next HistorX event to be held at Orktoberfest.
==========================================================
EDIT POST: 14 FEB 17
Just to iterate: Venue for HistorX III will be Enoggera Bowls Club. Saturday 28th October. 4 games. 650 points. 20mm scale only. 2 hour time limit (yes, it makes for rapid fire games). Different scoring system that is very simplified system.
===========================================================
EDIT POST: 18 FEB 17
Next historical group meet up is Sunday 12 Mar. Gaming FoGN. Other games on offer include Rapid Fire, X Wing, Lion Rampant. PM if interested in turning up, especially for a game of FoGN.
==========================================================
EDIT POST: 26 FEB 17
Finally made a start on replacement terrain pieces for the club. Wanting to do something different so, opting to borrow an earlier idea from Pete Dunn's trench system, I'm making my own version with strongpoints, turns, and end points. Below is a bastion/strongpoint/command post/gun emplacement. Happy with the embossed emblems but may leave them off for the next one. Added the figures to see if they fit.

Primed for painting later.

The Sketch Up design I created on Friday. Basic but suffice for the plan I have in mind. More details on my blogsite (see Modelling Diary in sig). Cheers.

==========================================================
Modular designs are underway. Made up a configuration just to compare the separate pieces I've made. Some modification required. Hoping to make enough to start casting in resin.
https://b20f08.files.wordpress.com/2017/01/...m-3-resized.jpg
==========================================================
A couple of close up pics of the trench system configurations shown above. Agreed, it's clunky and almost leggo without the leggo, but it suits me and I can now create something for the gaming club I'm devoted to. Explanation on the blogsite from whence I borrowed these images.

NOTE: You know you can bypass Photobucket (which is no longer free without a flood of ads that slows down the entire process of uploading your pics) by either using another image-hosting service, such as imgur or you can follow what I now use.
Moron's Guide: You simply post your pics elsewhere then copying the URL by clicking on the image and then coming here, click on the insert image icon, add the URL, and voila, free image upload without the effen stress. A moron's guide.
=========================================================
Grrrrr. Painting Wurttemburgers is like watching someone eat a Fergburger while you're standing across the road and feeling peckish yourself as they busily chomp down on it and dribble scraps of it everywhere. Bastards!

Full reports of today's fun day garage-gaming. Two games were played - FoGN and X Wing. Both proved entertaining as they were funny. Still giggling over the Light Infantry incident.
Learned a couple of things: 1) You can do a 650-pt 2 hour game of FoGN if you don't muck about like we did initially. 2) Forgotten what fun X Wing can be. Keen to pick it up again at the next get-together.

The HistorX III event in October will be using the draft version 2 (FoGN) - not v1. Our historical group will be playtesting draft version 2 from now until the tournament if you're keen to participate.
Still 20mm.
Still 650 points.
Still 2 hour limit per game.
Still one-dayer.
Still 4 games.
Still lovely prizes.
Cheers.
========================================================
POST EDIT: 22 MARCH
Running a playtest game of FoGN v2 Saturday. Still running a 650 point list - Russian 1812 vs French 1812.

Let me say first that FoGN is best played drunk. armata_PDT_34.gif You get more mileage from the situation and no one goes home (unless driving 40kph) is going to get hurt.

After three bottles of Merlot and Shiraz, we have both agreed that FoGN is the best gaming system bar none in the entire universe!! armata_PDT_14.gif

We tried. vainly, to playtest the new draft version. But we ended up too pissed to even remember what day it was. Unfortunately my laptop is choosing to play silly buggers and won't download the pictures of what was a fun night. My Ruskies got to a position where they worried the snail-eating, frog-leg chomping, onion and garlic smelling invaders. My Cossacks got to hoodwink the Cuirassiers by racing to the enemy's LOC.

Unfortunately my laptop has chosen this moment to go anal and therefore I can't download any pics of the fun-filled evening. But be assured that somehow a batrep will be posted. Soon.

Three large bottles of Shiraz/Merlot were consumed, which is the requisite amount required to play FoGN these days.

My opponent forgot to perform his movement phase in one turn that would have seen his heavy cavalry intercept the light cav unit making for the LOC. Then he forgot his firing move in the next turn. Lesson: be always mindful of the situation when having a few too many.

POINTS FOR QUESTION: Brigade Commanders. Do they receive a free CP, ie a cavalry unit makes an initial first move but then chooses to perform a second move (because it's 6MU from any enemy unit). Can it do so with its "free" CP/pip?

We managed to play six turns and therefore extended the playing time. But that was fine because we wanted to test out the Setting Up a Point Game situation, which we are both extreme fans of and will incorporate that in the upcoming event. But the players won't need to dice for terrain as each scenario will be set up; all they have to do is be aware of the scenario and deploy. Awesome!

The rules themselves are well setout now and therefore comprehensible. What is different is the setup for games: you now have an option to run either Attack/Defence or Scenario-based games.

For the upcoming event we will be using Scenari-based scenarios, with each of the six options declared as scenarios. Thus each pairing will only have to rock up, determine whether they're attacking or defender and take it from there.

Looking forward to October 28th. Remember that it's 20mm only .Plenty cheap to assemble and therefore participate. We have around a dozen already committed. Cheers.

Prepared assault (which is what I chose) is awesome. Three free turns of artillery with the option to deploy up to the centreline and also the option to turn 6MU to refire is what helped me to defeat the French 1812 list tonight. That, and three bottles of red wine. armata_PDT_14.gif

EDIT POST: 15 APRIL
Another game in the 2017 Lion Rampant campaign season (solo) played tonight. Like the last scenario, this one had its highlights - both leaders getting kilt, and an almost salvage-from-behind-last-minute effort to destroy the raiding marauders, unbelievably bad dice rolling (lots of snake eyes) that meant turns happened extremely quickly. Still tallying up the results. Full details in the May issue of Quarterstaff.

Next batrep will be Russian Civil War. Then American Sybil Wort with a quick foray into Micro-Armour WW2. The FoGN won't be happening until our historical group get-together in a few weeks. Until then, I'll just amuse myself by catching up on a lot of solo wargaming and boardgaming while I can. Cheers.

Playtested the Red Actions! ruleset. Finally. Being a new set, it started slow but once I got into the swing of things, it plodded along nicely. Full report in the May issue of Quarterstaff. Same pics and a bit more explanation in the RCW signature. Cheers.
https://b20f08.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/...0417_191106.jpg
Basic defend town situation against a probe in force. Reds held out quite well and actually began to push the Czechs back at one point. But the White cav had a minor victory defeating their Red counterparts and capturing the survivors as well as their commander.
https://b20f08.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/...0417_234405.jpg
The situation around the town and turnip field.
Quick impression of the ruleset. It's fine enough. Had a bit of a question during one of the combats where the results table gave an outcome that was at odds with the unit's specs. But I'll nut it out eventually. Cheers.
PS: I'm not sure if the names I've used for the Czech commanders are correct. The Red Actions! package isn't exactly the most helpful when it comes to clearly explaining things. Which can be extremely frustrating for someone with only one brain cell. I know the Red commander's names are correct, even down to the Commissar titles on some of them. Looking forward to seeing them in action on their own recalcitrant or disobedient leaders. Bang Bang! armata_PDT_34.gif

EDIT POST: 20 APRIL
Next month is the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, a pivotal moment in the Pacific theatre of the Second World War. It would change forever the face of naval operations.
Anyway, I've come up with a solo campaign using the naval air ops rules in GQ III. Several bombing run scenarios and one primary dogfight.
Full details available in Quarterstaff (out in first week of May). Because of the size of the mag, just PM me with your email addy and I'll add you to the mailing list. Cheers.

Another game of FoGN tonight. Started late so it was called early cos of time. Some pics; fuller review in the blog signature. Game was between French 1812 and French/Wurttemburg 1809. 650 points. Scenario strategies used as well as terrain placement. Game was a draw because outcome was inconclusive due to time restraint. Cheers.

Historical next get-together 17 June. PM for details. Cheers.
Wargames Illustrated are offering free a base version of Bob Murch's "Rugged Adventures" rules. Rugged Adventures is a skirmish game using alternate history figures (am looking at adapting my IHMN figures for this).

Although I enjoy watching other gamers and their terrain modelling efforts, these guys are at another level. They provide the incentive and inspiration. Imagine a skirmish game on one of these though. Brilliant.

Lol. There's always going to be those that don't appreciate and have to find fault with absolutely everything in life. Sad sacks. Some more wonderful miniature modelling from around the world.

Hi. Just a gentle reminder that HistorX III will still be held during Orktoberfest (28/29 October, so I believe). It will still be a one-dayer (Saturday).

It will be a Napoleonic event in 20mm scale using the latest edition of FoGN, whether it remains the current rules draft or a published copy (I can't confirm on when that's likely to happen or if it already has). Anyway, fuller details will be made available through the Aug issue of Quarterstaff.

Secondly, advance promotion for HistorX IV. This will most likely be a two-dayer event to be held around the same time of Winter Warfest 2018. Dates and venue to be confirmed in the new year (2018). The event will Rapid Fire 2, WW2 in 20mm scale.

So, for those in Brisbane looking for 20mm events, here you are. Cheers.

When two guy meet up to play a game, and haven’t bothered to read up the rules, then you’re either going to have a dull or a fun night
Tonight, we were meant to play Canvas Eagle, a WW1 aerial combat rule for biplanes. But the size of the PDF was too much for us to wade through because we hadn’t really read up on it. So we debated what to do next. In the end, my gaming partner came up with a quick lightweight version, which we call All Merlot On The Western Front. It’s a mish-mash with the emphasis on fun. If you want structure, read Canvas Eagles.
Inspired as we were, we settled on a best-of-three series. We started with one biplane each (my opponent selected Allies whilst I selected Axis). We would devise our rules on the fly (apt)
Game One
Winston(Allies) vs Max (Central Powers).
Winner – Central Powers. Winston got tailed by Max and it was easy peasey stuff for the German air ace. No one knows the fate of Winston (whether he got out safely).

https://b20f08.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/...0701_180935.jpg
Game Two
Gordon, replacing Winston who was still MIA/AWOL and Buck, an American (Allies) vs Max & Bruno (Central Powers)
Winner – Central Powers. Both Gordon and Buck are downed by Max. Buck survives by using a parachute but Gordon is lost.
Series Win – Central Powers

https://b20f08.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/...0701_185424.jpg
Game Three
Roger (replacing Gordon), Buck (returning), and Rick (with a silent P) (Allies) vs Max, Bruno and Fritz.
Winner – Allies (Roger)

All’s Merlot On The Quiet Front Light Rules (2D)
1. We played on a hexed mat but it doesn’t matter. All you need is a 3’ x 3’ board or any open space.
2. Used the movement templates from the X Wing game.
3. The range marker was the limit of our shooting range.
4. We both had two red (shooting) and one green (defence) dice. Shooting and defence the same as X Wing: Crit hits = 2 hits on canvas.
5. We each had 6 lives (1D6).
6. Two types of shooting: Deflection or Strafing (1 Red die) & Normal (2 Red dice).
6. Deflection shooting occurs first, followed by Normal shooting.
7. Fixed Line shooting only. No 360 unless you have an air gunner.
8. Actions (as per X Wing) – only allowed one. Can be used in deflection shooting or not.
9. Other flying actions allowed – Barrel Roll.
10. All red maneouvres mean you can only fire 1 Red die.
The above should be enough to get you started. Have fun! We did (except for the last game. Damn that slippery Roger the Dodger).
PS: It’s mandatory that you play this game with liquid refreshment, either wine or beer. If teetotal, apologies. biggrin.gif

FOGN Batrep
Points: 650
Forces: French (Traitor) vs French/Wurttemburg (Emperor's Chosen)
Scenario map: Hanover (previous post showing link to maps)
Strategy: French (Envelope) vs French/Wurttemburg (Prepared Attack).
With Envelop, one division is retained off-table and deploys after rolling a 5. This action commences in Turn Two. The flanking unit appears in the next movement phase after successfully passing muster.
With Prepared Attack, player gets two round of artillery bombardment on opposing player, deploying up to centreline.
Table size: 6' x 4'
Scale: 20mm
===============================================
Highlights: Game was concluded in three turns. The Emperor's Beloved (Hussars) rammed into the Traitors skirmishers (Light Infantry) as they closed on the gun-line. The skirmishers were unable to stand up to the wrathful Hussars and bolted to the rear where three other units were already licking their wounds after being shelled by the Emperor's Fist (arty gun-line). The pursuing Hussars destroyed the skirmishers then proceeded to mop up the milling traitors. Firstly it defeated then destroyed the traitorous Light Cavalry, then wheeled to finish off the Line conscripts. This was enough to end the game. Victory to the Emperor. Vive l'Empereur!!

Commentary:
There was a lot of discussion about how to incorporate the rules upgrade into the upcoming FoGN event. These points will be made clearer in the Player's Pack.
Link to fuller batrep. Cheers.
======================================================
CORRECTION TO SOME OF THE PICTURES: The Traitor's Mixed Division includes the Light Infantry while the division in the built-up area includes the Light Infantry unit.

A more detailed explanation of some of the points raised from last night's foray.
https://b20f08.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/...708_1646381.jpg
Okay. First point for discussion. Last night we spent about five minutes discussing this situation. The upgrade rules state that the rear rank's base of any unit exiting a BUA (Built-up area) must be touching the structure. As we understood it, this means any unit exiting the model building (that is representative of a BUA)must have the back of its rear rank base in contact with the structure. Or a large part of it where it exits.
While this means a model building is representative of the BUA (we're sorting that out for the event), it meant I could deploy in any direction but must have the back of my rear rank (or the majority of it) touching the structure. Which led to the confusion and debate at the time. What this meant was my unit could only deploy against the building faces.
A more flexible option that we partillay agreed upon and which we're going to use is that as long as any part of the unit in question is in contact with any part of the BUA then it can face in any direction.. We played it like this last night.
But after further thought, the full ruling is now: As long as any part of the exiting unit is in contact with any part of the BUA then it can face in any direction towards the threat. If within 2MU, however, the exiting unit must pass a CMT to perform this action. If it passes, it may form up as desired. If not, then it must form up at least 2MU distant..
===================================================================
https://b20f08.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/...708_1636551.jpg
Pursuit. This also caused us some minor grief. The first hiccup was the angle of attack between my Hussars and my opponent's Light Infantry who ended up routing. It was a narrow corridor. Subsequent to the Light Infantry routing there was an adjacent unit (Line Inf) who was thought to deflect the pursuing Hussars.
But this is a fallacy.
1. Because the combat is ongoing and directly involving the Retirers (Light Infantry) and Pursuers (Hussars), it means there is no third party involvement unless the Light Infantry melt through friendly troops directly to their rear, in which case the Pursuers (the Hussars) must contact this new threat.
The next section describes the ensuing action should the Pursuers fail to contact the Retirers. But the Hussars still hadn't rolled for Pursuit.
2. Having rolled successfully to contact the Retirers, there was then the query that the adjacent unit was in the direct line between pursuit and routers. But it makes no sense that a portion of any adjacent unit will be enough to convince the Hussars to change their focus who are still fired up after beating their foes and, being Pursuit, focussed on the Retirers.
The main section defining roles also goes into detail about subsequent actions between the two. Nowhere does it state that any adjacent unit is reason enough to change direction of assault.
3. Finally, regarding the Pursuit being parallel to the Retirers in the section on Pursuit.
The shifting to be parallel needs to be noted. The direction of the Retirers is towards their rear lines and not directly away from the frontage of the attackers. In other words, the Light Infantry made straight for their deployment zone and not across the fields (the photo shows the original frontage the Hussars presented against their opponents).
As played last night, so it will it be at the event should either of these two situations arise. Happy to discuss this with others but for now the decision is made. Cheers.

Next gaming scenario is CASTILE. Points to note are:
1. This is the only Attacker/Defender game. The remaining four scenarios (Hanover, Silesia, Saxony and Bohemia) are scenario-based games (ie Strategy Initiative).
2. Being A/D, it means the conditions of the game are different. If the Attacker captures at least 4 Objective points, game is over and Attacker is the victor, However, should the Defender manage to prevent this from happening by Game Turn 5, then the Defender wins the game.
3. Each of the four Grid Squares (GS) shown on the table map have the following points value:
  • GS2 & GS3 = 2 points apiece
  • GS5 = 1 point
  • GS11 = 3 points
4. Attacker, as per normal FoGN convention, moves twice in Turn One (unless they cross the centreline).
Cheers.

Gaming News
Repeat game this Friday evening. Same scenario and table (only different venue). But this time we switch places (my turn to attack). As usual, batrep will follow.
Game of X Wing on Saturday. Fun, fun, fun! FFG have also released the latest X Wing Fighter rules upgrade on their online site. Gee, the game is getting really rigid these days. Gamesmanship rulz!

POSTCRIPT
I have several 20mm 650 point lists if anyone wants to enter but can't field a list in time:
  • French/Wurttemburg 1813 (reformed)
  • Austro-Hungarian 1809 (unreformed)
  • Russian Infantry 1812
  • Russian Cavalry 1812
  • Russian Infantry 1805
  • Bavarian 1809 (reformed)
We'll be focussing on playing all the scenarios for the event. And updating them as required. Cheers.
Just got the latest version (#4, June 2017) of the rules upgrade. I'm assured there will be one more further tweak for release, hopefully before my own modified local tournament in October. When that arrives, and depending on timing of release, this latest version (#5?) will be the official version used for the tournament.
Remember, this upcoming FoGN event will be a modified 650 points, 20mm, 1-dayer event. We are still sorting out game time (we had planned on a 2 hour timeframe but that may extend). Should it prove successful, then it will sit alongside your standard 2-day, 800 point, 15mm, 3-3.5 hr style event. Of course, we will have the usual unique prizes made available.
Finally, a recent contact has provoked a thought regarding Napoleonics. I'll post in the Historical section shortly. Hopefully, I can get some feedback. Cheers.

EDIT POST: 22 July
FoGN batrep
Scenario: Castile (2nd time)
Roles reversed
Tweaks: Deployment slightly different for defender for this game: Defender gets one div able to deploy up to 24" from rear edge, one div up to 12", and one div (if possessing) is in reserve (dice to enter as per normal).
Game report: This was a really bad game for me as attacker. I made two fatal mistakes in my moves that my opponent rightly exploited to the full. As I had demolished his rear in another game, so he did the same with me in this scenario. Was it brutal? Definitely. Did I get demoralised? Absolutely. But, when all seemed lost, my opponent kindly pointed out that one of my units had actually seized an objective. This reminded me -- much later -- what the purpose of this scenario was all about. The demolition of my army was secondary.
Review: Definitely changes are again in order to remedy this.

X Wing
Had a fun game of X Wing today. Another gaming buddy brought round his Scurrg bomber. He wanted to experiment with his list and trial the bomber, so we had a very friendly game. He brought a Scum list with a Scurrg bomber (Captain Nim) and two Y-wings (one heavily customised with twin laset turrets, etc.).
Thinking I was going to get smashed, I only had an A wing (Tycho), an X wing (Luke) and two Y wings (one Horton, the other a Gold wing).
We played with an asteroid field as well. Prelims saw Captain Nim deploy mines. Following too closely can result in being bombed (or pooped as I called it). Somehow, though, my list survived the bitter pooping and pew pewing and so forth as the Scum were defeated. I only lost Tycho and Horton (hears a who?).
Next game is looking interesting with me playing an Imp list against my opponent's Rebel/Scum list.

POST EDIT: 12 AUG
Changes from Castille: Definitely removing the third division (reserve) from the setup. The concept of defensive battle in the sense of the scenario is that one side is in a defensively designed position confronting a larger offensive-oriented force. In other words, your classic historical defensive battle.
Scoring for this game will be different, as set out in the map PDF. Made it quite simple but will also have its corresponding FoGN value. The other five scenarios will remain true to the standard FoGN scoring system. This will be made known in the player's pack.
Next FoGN scenario to be reviewed and tested will be Hanover Silesia, a decidedly difficult situation, so I've been told. Will make tweaks after the game.
Had an interesting outing with a colleague. Went to a train show at a local church fete. Interesting day. Got some pointers on sculpting from a kind gentleman who showed me how to sculpt heads, hands and even capes very quickly. More details on my modelling blogsite. Link.

HistorX III is fast approaching and I'm needing an indication of who is likely to attend. If you've got a 20mm Napoleonic list (650 pts) and keen to test your Nap skills in a friendly atmosphere, let me know here.
The event will be using the latest draft copy of the proposed FoGN v2. Player's Pack still under review and won't be released until mid-September late August. Cheers.
==============================================
EDIT POST: 19 AUG
This HistorX event coming up in late October is a limited event, meaning places are limited to ten players tops. The prizes are worth more than the total entry fee but it's worth it to see Nap tourneys happening in Brisbane once more. Remember: it's 20mm only and limited to 650 points (FoGN rules). Which means a three-division Corps can be done quite easily. Tourney itself will be what I call fast-play in that action begins from Turn One and hopefully will be bot challenging and relentless until time is called (regardless of situation). Yes, there will be a time-limit set and enforced. It's going to be a long day if you attend. But you will get four fast and furious games against some of the nicest assassins outside of New York and John Wick. smile.gif And remember, good planning will have a great bearing on outcomes. However, the element of luck (dice rolling) will ensure there will be a few surprises before the dust has settled and shakos replaced. And, as we say in the BS industry, bombs away! armata_PDT_34.gif

EDIT POST: 29 AUG
Scenario Notes for HX III event.
Useful gaming notes for each scenario based on playtesting and design. Players, for this event, have a clear mandate to plan their strategies for each of the scenarios planned.
CASTILLE
This is your straightforward attack/defend scenario. Seizing/holding objectives is paramount in this game and thus define the tactics to be employed. Key points to note are:
  1. The 8 Objective Points on offer are designed so that two are sited on the left side of the table (long edge facing) while the other two are located on the right side. Therefore the Attacker has a choice as to which side to target in his attack strategy and should plan accordingly.
  2. The objectives are placed so that either side has four objective points in total, the left side with the monument = 2 and windmill on hill = 2; the right side with the fountain (1 pt) and the village (3 pt).
  3. The Defender comes into action much quicker because of the size of the deployment zone. This is meant to offset the attacker's advantage with his two "free" turns (providing he doesn't cross the centreline).
  4. Occupying an objective, for this event, is standard: two corners of a unit base must be in direct contact with the structure (NOTE: not area but structure) to be considered occupying -- where possible. Obviously, where the target is smaller than the unit (large unit), it may be difficult to conform to the two corner rule. Therefore, as long as it's possible to draw an imaginary line running from corner to corner along the same edge and it runs through the structure, that is suffice. Or, ask the TO for clarification. smile.gif
  5. Manoeuvring should be minimal as the defender should already be in a fixed defensive position and the attacker already formed up to commence attacking from Turn One.
  6. No reserve/flanking force allowed.
  7. To occupy an objective, a side must be the ONLY force in contact with objective by Game's end.
  8. Defender MUST have ONE unit (not command) in contact with each of the FOUR objective at the START of the game.
Scoring:
The scoring sheet (downloadable and required for the event) for this scenario is slightly different in that the usual three scoring sections (Bonus, Own Losses & Opponent Losses) have been changed to being worth 8 points each. This leaves 1 extra point to fulfill the requisite 25 scoring points per game. That BONUS point therefore will denote a win/lose/draw value defining overall Objective achievement.
-- To count as a WIN then, the Attacker must be in possession of FOUR or more objective points at Game's end. Attacker gains the 1 Bonus point while the Defender scores 0.
-- To count as a DRAW, the Attacker must be in possession of TWO/THREE objective points at Game's end. Both sides gain 0.5 Bonus point apiece.
-- To count as a LOSS, the Attacker has only ONE or ZERO objective points. Defenders gains the 1 Bonus point instead.
Finally
No redoubt? No. Yes. Reason: cost and value. This event has always been about running fast-paced games where all the planning has been done beforehand, and all that's left is execution. Clear and simple.
Tomorrow: HANOVER

Don't forget the historical guys are having an informal get-together out at Redcliffe in case anyone is interested. It'll be a 9-9.30am start on Sunday, 3rd September. Cheers.

EDIT POST: 31 AUG
Scenario notes for HXIII event
HANOVER
Note: All remaining scenarios now have pre-set Strategic Initiatives. These will be released as part of the updated Player's Pack, available this weekend.
For Hanover, the two pre-set Strategy Initiatives are:
1. Flexible Defence
2. Prepared Attack.
Procedure for play: Both players roll 1D6. Winner selects Strategy Initiative while loser chooses table edge.
Main notes for this scenario:
  1. The Prepared Attack player is deemed the Attacker.
  2. There are two objectives for each player to consider: the building/area objective located in the centre, and the LOC situated on the flanks.
  3. LOC. Players have a choice of which flank to place their LOC. These must be placed prior to any deployment.
  4. Scoring: standard 25 points.
  5. Bonus points are tied to holding and seizing objectives and LOCs.
  6. Points raised in previous playtest apply in this game (see Batrep above). Where it differs from the rules, the local ruling will apply for duration of the event.

EDIT POST: 3 SEP
Revised Player's Pack for the FoGN event is now active again. Link.
Get-together today. Forgot it's Father's Day. Happy Dad's day to all those "lucky ones" out there. Heading off in a few hours for a game of pew pew. Keen to see how my Imperials go up against the latest the Scum have to offer. Reminds me of Wacky Races, an old Hanna Barbera cartoon favourite, that used to be on in weekend mornings. Dick Dastardly in his Mean Machine with sidekick Muttley the dog used to go up against the other racers like Penelope Pitstop, The Ant Hill Mob, or the Slag Brothers and their Boulder Mobile. Ah, Fathers Day back then... armata_PDT_34.gif

EDIT POST
Hope all the Dads had a peaceful relaxing day - indoors as well as outdoors.

Went to one of the groups home today for a spot of X Wing (pew pew). Ran the familiar Vindicator/Interceptor (Chiraneau/Fel) combo against Rynn in the Millenial Falcon and Poe Dameron in his biscuit-coloured X Wing.

The crew of the Falcon is the current upgrade from Chewy and Hans (RIP big daddy) whom I dubbed Ren and Stimpy. And they are a nasty combo - Attack dice plus 1 bonus blank roll. Every time. As my Interceptor regrettably found out when I passed by the Falcon too closely. It was blown to smithereens.

Lucky for the Vindicator's hardiness (shame about the lack of defence dice though). It survived some serious hits before we got one back. Bye bye Poe!

Now it was a game between the big ships. My Vindicator could only do big loops; it did not have the advantage that the devious Falcon crew had of doing a straight-ahead move with a 180 turnaround. Talk about turning on a dime.

Seeing his fate among the midi-chlorians, Admiral Chiraneau ordered "Full ahead ramming speed!" Reluctantly the survivors among his crew obliged, even if ramming speed was an unknown maneouvre in the Imperial How to fly a Vindicator training manual. As both ships passed by one another, Ren and Stimpy smiled their cheesy best and sent Chiraneau and co. to midi-chloride ether!

The Rebels won. Ren and Stimpy whooped all the way back to their base unaware that Darth Vadar had been watching, courtesy of long ranger scanner and secret sentry outpost. "Send for Tur Phenurr. I have mission of utmost important for him."

Thanks to Glynn. Always a delightful challenge playing him. There was a game of 40K going on today but I had already lost interest and went home. Till the next one, which'll be at my place (bbq by the swimming pool). See you lot there. armata_PDT_34.gif

PS: No photos...too busy fighting for my wargaming life today...!

POST EDIT: 18 SEP
Now that notes on scenarios are out, interested parties should be devising their lists and submitting them for vetting. Payments also welcome too (in order to prepare tables). armata_PDT_34.gif

Return to scheduled program soon. That means updates on the Lion Rampant 2017 campaign season. Should be a hoot given the growing casualties.

Don't forget the Historical group are getting together for a fun day (1 October) starting 9am and running to whenever. Games already earmarked include 40K, Rapid Fire, FoGN, X Wing to name those confirmed. Yes, we tend to use the term "historical" loosely. Cheers.
