After visiting the indescribably brilliant Tutankhamun exhibition at the Victoria Museum recently (and a huge recommendation: do whatever you can to see this before it ends in November), I have been inspired to dust off my Wargods armies & once more venture forth in to the deserts of AEgyptus.
The AFL Grand Final being on the Saturday of MOAB means that I won't be tournament bound until CANCON 2012, but this forum, and more worringly, the (admittedly user unfriendly) forum at Croc Games now appear to have all the life and verve of a maggot in a Mortein factory. Have the Wargods upped their temples & silently drifted away from our shores? Is the game truly comatose? And is there even the faintest hope of it lingering on? Bereft, as I am, of any opposition even remotely available for regular gaming, am I wasting my time wailing in the wilderness for this wonderfully conceived game? -------------------- "He who laughs last ... Unfortunately Croc Games are their own worst enemy - a shocking release schedule that they can't even stick too then. I mean a lot of the new posts on their forums are "when is" related these days..
The miniatures are fantastic and sucker me in every time - i just bought a Mcyenaen army (and should get it in about a month). Aegyptus never really appealed to me and the only reason i have an asar army was to get practice on the game system as i waited for olympus to be released and waited and waited etc etc etc Really the only games i play are at cancon - and why not - all the players that go are great - but then i guess we pretty much all know each other... But its not a lack of opponents - There are at least 6 (i think) locals near me that have at least one faction for aegyptus. Its just there are other games that are more mainstream that are played more. So i guess i'm hoping the game aint dead too. Its too good to let die. They should have gone into overdrive to try and pickup the fantasy market in the wake of 8th ed. but Privateer Press beat them to it. I fear the game just isn't marketed anymore and really needs to get out there and shout. i mean the first i hear about croc stuff is usually on TGN and i dont recall EVER seeing a picture to go with the news story. -------------------- "A lady should wear a dress or nothing......and I happen to have nothing in my cabin."

One reply in a week (albeit, on an admittedly sidetracked forum) is hardly grounds for optimism. I started a thread on the actual Croc Forum concerning MOAB and Barry was the only one to reply.
What can we do as a group to maintain our core constituency & then expand the game in our neck of the deserts? -------------------- "He who laughs last ... "

The film '300' was released in 2006. That's five years ago. WarGods of Olympus is still unreleased.
They were handed an amazing opportunity - and they blew it. I will probably continue to buy their miniatures (they are awesome) but it will be for other systems. -------------------- Kings of War Campaign at Greenacre Gamers, SA.
Exemplary - Grand Exemplar Kreoss Army Blog - Retired QUOTE("Demon") I look forward to a repeat of 3 years ago. Ie people who still play who said they'd quit 3 years ago saying this is the last straw, people explaining how they'll stick it to the man by continuing to buy their products but through independents. It will be new and refreshing I'm sure |

It's definitely not dead... And even is growing still in places...
But it doesn't operate on WAU. (strangely enough- there is more than one miniature gamer that doesn't use WAU every year (let alone every day) Croc are definitely "their own worst enemy"... It's a fickle Market which likes new noise and stuff all the time... And the company is a few guys- most of whom work full time, and do the gaming thing after work. They set a slow release schedule- and struggle to be anywhere near meeting it. - that's a big danger when you are totally relaint on only a couple of people... It only takes one set back, or someone to "have an attack of life" - and everything falls over in the company for a while. -------------------- "You've gotta buy gaming stuff at least once a week; if you don't, then you're a sinner."

A couple of years ago, I posted on the Croc forum my frustrations with the company and why I was walking away from the game. Chris wrote a well thought out post explaining the situation. However in that time I don't think much has changed. There are a number of other ames companies that do it much better and make entry far easier and support their games a lot better.
To be honest I think the game is limited to an extremely small niche. And it always will be, unless Croc makes some serious investments. But I doubt they are or will be in a position to do that. I suspect that you could count on one hand the number of new people that took the game up in Australia last year. As for growing the game I am not sure, Barry does a great job with his tournies, but to be honest, I don't know what could be done, the competition is miles ahead of Croc games. |

I've started a thread on the Croc Forum in the Off Topic Chat section under the title of Wargods of Oz. I would like to ask you who have answered here to get involved over there as well.
My thunking is to start with a head count of who still actually has Wargods figures (or appropriate subs) & is still looking for a game, and from there try to spark some interest going once more. Regardless of how crap Croc are at actually running their own game (and that forum website is an absolute shocker for starters), the fluff, the actual rules and the miniatures themselves are just too evocative and inspirational to let the whole shebang just fade away. The most spectacular looking games that I have played under any gaming system in my 35 years of wargaming have easily been Wargods, especially on Barry's mindblowing tables. No other system comes remotely close. My old Sebeki were bought for my 50th birthday, and I'm now all inspired and fired up to ensure that they're finally fully painted in time for my 54th this October! (Which is a perfect metaphor for Croc Games, when you think about it!) This post has been edited by ooze: Jul 24 2011, 09:41 PM -------------------- "He who laughs last ... "

Actually mate, there are a fair few players not too far away from you in basically all directions.
The best way to strike up some contacts is to introduce yourself and strike up some conversations at the Croc forum: here. And then try to get along to MOAB, CANCON & Leviathon to get some concentrated weekends of games. -------------------- "He who laughs last ... "

... Hmmm... The CanCon thin is looking pretty quiet this time round.
I'm hoping that it'll be enough to kick things back off locally though- we have two guys heading up from Central Vic to play... Hopefully they'll be re-energised enough to start spreading it again. -------------------- "You've gotta buy gaming stuff at least once a week; if you don't, then you're a sinner."
