About two years ago I had bought the models for opposing DBA armies of Later Carthaginians and Polybian Romans. The models I purchased at the time were from Irregular Miniatures because they had an Australian distributor. However I didn't really like the sculpts (especially of the Roman heavy infantry) and I never got around to painting the models.

Noone seems to play DBA locally on the Central Coast. The most popular Ancients ruleset at the moment is ADLG. Whilst DBA requires exactly 12 bases of models on the table per side, ADLG armies will normally have 20 - 24 units with each unit consisting of 1 or 2 DBA bases. I thus decided to start my ADLG armies from scratch, rather than relying on fitting in the miniatures that I had previously bought. I went with Forged in Battle miniatures, and have been very happy with the sculpts so far.

To start my ADLG Carthaginian army I ordered the WE-BOX03 CARTHAGE box set. This consists of the following figures

1x General (Hannibal)
12x Carthaginian Heavy Cavalry (from WE-CA01)
64x Carthaginian Unarmoured African Foot (from WE-CA02)
16x Carthaginian Libyan Skirmishers (from WE-CA04)
12x Carthaginian Balearic Slingers (from WE-CA04)

I also purchased a blister of light horse at the same time

12x Numidian Light Cavalry (WE-NU01)

That would give me 4 units of heavy cavalry (3 figures per cavalry unit), 8 units of African Foot spearmen (8 figures per Heavy Infantry unit), 8 units of Libyan Skirmishers (2 figures per light infantry unit), 6 units of slingers, and 6 units of Light Horse (2 figures per unit).

In a 200 pt Carthaginian Army you can have a maximum of 2 units of HC, 6 units of spearmen, 6 units of skirmishers, 4 units of slingers and 6 units of LH, so I have more figures than I can actually use at 200 pts but they could be useful at 300 pts (where the limits on each troop type are increased) or if I want to expand up to S&S levels.

Although I had extra models that I can't use, the models that I can use provide me with a force of about 160 pts. I need to buy some different models to field extra units to make up to the standard 200 pts army.

For my follow up purchase I have ordered

6 x command figures (WE-G20 Carthaginian & Numidian Generals)
2 x Carthaginian Elephants (WE-CA05)
12 x medium cavalry (WE-CA11 Carthaginian Heavy Cavalry with Unarmoured horse)
24 x Gallic warriors (WE-GA05 Celtic Warriors)
24 x Gallic warriors (WE-GA10 Celtic and Gallic Warband-II)

The Gallic warriors can either be fielded in units of 6 as medium infantry or of 8 as heavy infantry. I haven't decided yet which way I will go.

The new purchases will givs me about another 100 pts worth of units once they are all painted up (which will probably take me year or two sad.gif ) I will have 260 pts total and options on what to field in a 200 pts army. Purchasing the models in two batches worked well as Forged in Battle currently have a £10 discount on orders over £50 pounds, and I got the discount twice. In practice the discount basically cancelled out the cost of shipping.

The models I purchased cost me £63 + £50 = AUD$222. This is about half the cost of what I have spent on each of my main Flames of War armies.

Now I just need to paint them and get them on the battle field!

Army list for pre 200BC. Strictly speaking I have too many heavy cavalry and spearmen for 100 pts list, but it is using all the models that I have painted.

Six months later and I have painted enough figures for a full 200 pts game.
