Hi Gents,

So now that Wintercon 40k has finished up for another year, I would like some feedback going forward. I think there are areas for improvement and also ways that I can make the event better going forward.

Some things to think about:

-How did you find the points limit? Do you think it could be reduced to produce a better experience?
-Were the missions okay? Were they interesting enough to engage you all weekend?
-Was the amount of terrain sufficient on the boards?
-Did you find the leadup to the event satisfactory? Did you find list construction simple and stress-free or could it be refined?

Please remember that the CGS has set the cost for the event and the amount of prize support - whilst I would love to get a higher amount per player or lower the cost to make it more enticing for people to come, I have no ability to influence that. I can't also make the canteen not awful nor can I make the venue warmer.

And with that in mind, let the torrents of abuse feedback be gathered!

My only suggestions are;

Allow armies to take 1 superheavy. I generally find they are a great counter to invis, which really ran rampant.

I think make the points 1750 or increase round time.

Have a best costume award.

Otherwise it was great buddy

Only things id suggest would be look into paddlecomp or itc format, ive found they promote a lot of variety and give people a sense of comfort that there has been some balance applied to the craziness that is 40k.

Alow 0-1 sh or gc, I donr find them fun to use, but a lot of people do, and countering one isnt rocket science.

Other than that stellar tournie man smile.gif

From myself, the points limit is fine. If they were to be reduced, it would then start to impact upon match-ups for games depending upon the missions being run.

As for the missions, The only one I had a issue with, was the one where you drew the amount of cards as objectives you hold. I find it proves to turn into a either a land slide to either player, or a stagnate match with each player just camping on objectives and not really proving to be a fun game either way.

I believe that ITC or even ETC Missions would work better. ITC combine a Eternal War Primary and have Modified Maelstrom Secondary whereas ETC have an Eternal War Primary, Maelstrom Secondary with a modified Objective deck.

I found that the terrain could of maybe been spread out more evenly between the tables. I think the amount was right on the money, but a bit less on some tables and a bit more on others would of allowed for some more interesting games. Both of these I believe also come with an FAQ, allowing player to know answers to any rules questions before even submitting their list for the event.

Apart from the above, it was a great event and I'm keen for next year smile.gif

Fully agree with the ITC sentiment. It reduces the dominance of the power lists and balances out the randomness of maelstrom. Unfortunately as much as I love maelstrom games, I had 2 games that really buggered me as I simply did not get anything I remotely had a chance of scoring bad opposed to my opponent who scored easily without even moving.

ITC format keeps the excitement of maelstrom scoring without the randomness, I have played a few missions just casually and they are amazing.

Otherwise pretty good smile.gif

Also, you can join up with the ITC and have our scores recorded vs the world. We would be advertised on frontline podcast which would really help boost numbers.

Oh and one last thing, terrain was great but the majority of people I talked to had a grumble about the bedsheet plains, they keep getting bunched up and aren't hugely nice to play on. Next year our club should have more fat mats to bring hopefully, but that's definitely something to look at as that extra level. Otherwise terrain was great!

Some suggestions based on my experience this weekend:

- if you want to fix invisibility then fix invisibility, don't add superheavies or gargantuans because of one broken rule.

- the painting scores were frustratingly inconsistent, there were some very nicely painted armies that were getting the same scores as armies that were primed with a few colours.

- remove the rule for painted / based skimmer bases, there isn't a requirement for it; forcing people to base all their skimmer bases just creates busywork for no gain.

- drop the points to 1500, the games are just as fun and we won't hit the wall on time; every game I played wasn't able to get to turn five due to time constraints. I'd rather err on the side of spare time than rushing about trying to pack up and get to the next game.

- scrap the sheets, I think most people would rather play on a bare flat surface than a sheet that habitually crumples, causes cocked dice and looks average.

If you didn't make it to turn 5 at all you're playing too slowly.

+1 for the ITC style missions

1850pts was fine with the time given for each game.

other than that was a great weekend

Nearly every tournament I have been to has had the based skimmers requirement, so its interesting that it is brought up...

Also, the reason I say bring unban superheavies is because their counter is already in the game.... Changing invis then means that other things then get stronger (large blasts of high strength etc). One superheavy is usually enough that everyone can deal with it... Between melta (marines, elder, guard, tau)) Gauss, haywire (nids, de) lances (nids,, elder, dark elder) and d weapons (many superheavies) most armies have the counter. An army of superheavies is relatively strong, 1 per army is ok...

Again on the ITC band wagon, they mod invis to exactly this, they also try and balance other bull######tery to avoid broken stuff and make the games much more balanced.

ITC is the future man, the future I tells ya!

Great tournament, it was a lot of fun. I will be back next year for sure.

I do agree with using ITC or ETC missions though, maelstrom missions to often just come down to the draw of the cards.
