Terrain: It's a Jungle Out There (part one)

Before beginning on the Hoth inspired table common sense kicked in, and I decided I should really finish my other two tables before starting a third... tongue.gif

One of which is a jungle table. It've already made enough barricades/walls, two bunkers and it has plenty of trees/plant/rock formations to provide enough cover to keep the mechanics of the game working.

IPB Image

The last thing that this table required was a centre piece of some sort. So, I've decided to go with a not-so-secret research facility which will also create a focal point for objective based scenarios.

IPB Image

It was made out of foamcore on top of a cardboard and foamcore base that is roughly A2 is size. Balsa wood (seeing I had some close to hand) was used to add a little detail to walls which would of otherwise looked fairly boring.

Next episode: painting it!

Thanks!

Caledonian Volunteers
The skin on these models (as the colours I use generally change with time/model/mood) were painted with a 50/50 mix of Dwarf Flesh and Vomit Brown, this mix was then gradually highlighted with Bleached Bone added. I then washed the skin with either Gryphone Sepia or Gryphone Sepia and a tiny amount of the original mix (pre-Bleached Bone) added. The eyes were then painted, as you can fix up any mistakes in the the final stages. A few final highlights are then done with the Flesh/Vomit/Bone mix with more Bleached Bone added as I see fit.
Stubble was added with mixing a tiny amount of the original mix with either Devlan Mudd or the Black wash.

Dozer Field Engineer
The skin on this models was painted with a 75/25 mix of Dwarf Flesh and Vomit Brown, this mix was then gradually highlighted with Bleached Bone added. I then washed the skin with Gryphone Sepia and a tiny amount of the original mix (pre-Bleached Bone) added. The few final highlights are then done with the Flesh/Vomit/Bone mix with more Bleached Bone added as I see fit.
The cheeks has a really small amount of Blood Red added to this mix.

NB: The highlights were done with keeping the colour/paint really thin.

That looks amazing, Din.

The table looks really cohesive.

That is the first time I've liked the Dozer Field Engineer model.
You brought out the contours much nicer than the studio paint job, I really like it. Looks Caledonian, too.

Stop talking about Caledonians, I have a box full of them and want to get my Pan Oceania done first. They are calling...

I have a question on the jungle board - were you able to buy the aquarium plants in bulk somewhere? I've been looking around, but pet shops seem to charge too much to make it worthwhile.

I actually just got lucky to be completely honest. I had a fair amount of the GW plastic jungle plants donated by a friend that didn't want them. I also bought a single pack of aquarium plastic plants from a pet shop for about $14.00, and althought they were a different (better) colour they looked to be from the same type of mold (or very similiar) as the GW ones.
I also stumbled upon these large sprues (the one in the photo is about half the size of how it came) of smaller plastic plants for a about $5.00 each from an Asian ornament and furniture store. These are fantastic for adding more depth and colour, you can also cut the leaves off and stick them individually to a models base.
Also I went hunting at a couple of the Discount shops here in Adelaide and found batches of Aquarium plants for about $2.00 a pack. Individually they look fairly plain, but when mixed together with the rest of the plants they do the job of adding variety and colour.
I also went and bought a single pack of the GW Warhammer trees and mixed them up with some of the old 40k jungle kit. worked out pretty well, but a bit too costly for the end result.

Hope this helps, and if you discover anything in your searches make sure you send me a PM smile.gif

Top Left: plants from a pet shop... I bought one pack for about $14.00
Middle: GW Jungle Plants (which were actually the same mold as those I got from the Pet Shop)
Top Right: GW trees with bits from the 40k Jungle kit added
Bottom Left: the sprues I found picked up for $5.00
Bottom Right: the $2.00 packs I found at one of the discount stores here

Thanks for the rundown.

There seem to be a few cheaper ways to get Infinity terrain done and still maintain the quality.

Terrain: It's a Jungle Out There (part two)

IPB Image

The research facility needed furniture and other things to add some detail. A quick rummage, a bit of converting and some assembling and I was on the way. The computer screens and couches I had picked up from Antenocitis Workshop a while back, the work stations and pot plants were from styrene card and some left over jungle plants. The generator-thingy is from AT-43 (or whatever it's called) and finally the 'ventilation systems' were from some old skool GI-Joe backpacks I had come across.

IPB Image

The cyborg/test subjects were made from assorted GW bases, some old salt and pepper plastic containers, liquid glass, painted pin for the wiring and a miniature from an old range that I can't really remember. I used some of the 40mm Infinity bases turned upside down with the circular indents painted to represent lighting/heating, the photo below gives a better view of this.

IPB Image

It was my first time using liquid glass so there was a fair amount of bubbling and mess, but I'm actually okay with the bubbling as it makes it look like the vat/system is actually functioning rather than the cyborg just sitting in still liquid.

Terrain: It's a Jungle Out There (part three)

I wanted to keep the colours fairly drab and bleak, even that goes pretty much against how Infinity is presented. To me this was some secret shaddy research facility tucked in the middle of nowhere. So with this in mind I hopped to it...

IPB Image

I didn't bother thinning down the paint as I wanted the exterior (and interior to an extent) looking like it was built for functionality more than comfort. The outside area was based in the same manner as the rest of the Jungle table (more photos of the will come today) and static grass and more plastic jungle plants were added to tie it all in.

IPB Image

All the furniture and interior detailing was then added...

IPB Image

IPB Image

Looking forward to getting some games in on this smile.gif

IPB Image

EDIT: All that's left isd to add the windows. I have some clear styrene which will do the job, but I was considering perhaps trying to find something with a tint or 'frosted' pattern to it.

Terrain: It's a Jungle Out There (part four)

Thought I would chuck some pics of the jungle table and how the research lab fits in...

IPB Image

All from above it can look a little bare, once you get down to eye level there is plenty of cover from the 'man-made' bunkers, walling, reasearch facility and the plants, hills and rock formations.

IPB Image

The rocky outcrops and hills were made from cork board I had sitting in the house doing nothing.

IPB Image

IPB Image

The marshes were put together using molded clear styrene with the underside painted.

IPB Image

Each copse of plants has sections that can be removed for when EXP or Flame ammunition is shot into them.

IPB Image

IPB Image

Cheers for having a look!

Brilliant stuff Din - inspired me to expand on my infinity jungle table so that my acontes have somewhere to play. Great to see people putting in the time and effort to create infinity terrain that does the figures justice!
