Apart from Belial and Sammeal the DA characters are pretty average.

Dark Angels have a lot going for them. You just need to know which units are worthwhile, and which ones arent.

Ravenwing is a hard sell.
Deathwing is something you really can't get elsewhere. Pupwing might come close, but it might be a while before you actually see a regular Pupwing player at your club.

Put on some coffee and read through:
http://www.thedarkfortress.co.uk/tech_repo..._divergence.htm (if you only read one, this should be it)
http://www.thedarkfortress.co.uk/tech_reports/da_5th_sm.htm
http://www.thedarkfortress.co.uk/tech_reports/da_5th_sm2.htm

Then go to Warseer and subscribe to the DA tactica. If you can live without Landspeeder Storms and Thunderfire Cannons, blow off the "green marines" idea. It makes a win even more rewarding.

It depends on why you play, and what style army you have.

If you are building an army using only the options available in both codexes, it will be about 10% cheaper points wise if using Codex Space Marines.

If you are playing Combat Patrol style missions, or other games at the 400 - 600 pts level, then the fixed 10 man squads in Codex Dark Angels means that you will almost certainly need to use Codex Space Marines as its just to hard to build the force you want to the specific points limit otherwise. To me, this is the biggest problem with Codex Dark Angels.

If you use the Codex Dark Angels colour scheme and icons, some players (not me) will look at you funny if you use the Codex Space Marines rules.

If you want to use lots of Terminators, you are better off with Codex Dark Angels.

If you want to use lots of Scouts, you are better off with Codex Space Marines.

Hopefully Dark Angels will get a new codex or PDF at some time to more closely align the power/costs of the various marine codexes. In the meantime there is always WFB :-)

Regards

Mark C

Fair points Mark. Remember DA scouts are quite different to SM scouts. But yep, if you want a scout army, then DA isn't for you.

Yep. That's why I posted:

There is still much cross codex hate.
That, and both the Space Marine and Dark Angels codexes telly you what armies are allowed to be fielded with those dexes.
In the bit about "How to use this codex" - LOL

If you have models painted with your own colours and heraldry, you can use any book you like.
If you've got Dark Angel / Blood Angel / Space Wolf / Black Templar / Ultramarine colours and heraldry (including successor chapters) you're rather more limited.
In a backyard friendly, do whatever you like.
Expect at least some people to get frazzled if you turn up to a tourney. Others won't care.

I'm the opposite Harvey. Having to remember the differences from the SM codex and DA makes it likely I will misjudge a unit or something.

Luckily I'll more than likely think the unit is more dangerous that it is, rather than visa versa!
