Geoff Jose Memorial Warhammer Tournament

Below are the rules for this years GJMWT. My aim for this Tournament is to remember a mate, and to have fun doing so. The Geoff Jose is not a "serious" tournament. If you wish to have a "serious tournament", bugger off and go somewhere else. However, if you want to come along, play three games in a day surrounded by mates, have a few beers (or a couple of dozen if you are Papa), watch Roy (Mephetran) get drunk and burn the sausages, then come along and be welcome.

I haven't made any changes from last year. Infact, due to the recent release on 8th Edition of Warhammer, and the desire of many Blind Pig Regulars to keep this years 7th Edition, that is what I have done.

The Geoff Jose Memorial Warhammer Tournament 2010

A Warhammer Fantasy Event for Brisbane

What follows below are the tournament rules for The Geoff Jose Memorial Warhammer Tournament 2010. In the interests of fairness, and open competition, I have tried to make the scoring system as transparent as possible. To use a common war gaming phrase; "what you see is what you get!'' The rules should cover most eventualities, however in the event of an issue arising that is not covered by this document, the decision of the tournament convener, Rebecca Weir is final.

THE AIM

The overall objectives of Geoff Jose Memorial Warhammer Tournament 2010 are to remember one of Brisbane’s true wargaming characters, promote the game of Warhammer Fantasy Battles (WFB) in Brisbane and to have fun.

Venue:

RSL Memorial Hall
56 Arnold Street
Holland Park
Brisbane
QLD 4109

Geoff Jose Memorial Warhammer Tournament 2010 uses the rules outlined below:

THE CHAMPIONSHIP

The tournament will consist of three games during the one day:

Saturday 4th of September
• 8:00 - 8:30am Players arrive at the RSL Memorial Hall and set up their armies.
• 8:30 - 11:00pm Game 1, seeding based on random draw and grudge matches
• 11:00 - 11:45pm Beauty Pageant and lunch
• 11:45 – 2:15pm Game 2, seeded based on previous round Battle results
• 2:30 – 5:00 Game 3, Seeded based on previous round Battle results
• 5:15pm Results and Presentations by members of the Jose Family

The categories used to determine the overall champion will be:
• Battle Results - 60
• Gamesmanship - 36

The methods used to score each of these categories will be addressed in detail below.

PRIZE CATEGORIES

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
• Overall Champion - The best performed player over all categories, except Best Appearance.
• Best Gamesman - Highest score in Sportsmanship and Composition combined.
• Best General - The player who scores highest in Generalship.
• Best Painted Army- The player who receives the most peer-based votes for their army.

The aim is to make 1st, 2nd and 3rd position prizes available in the overall category, and first place in the individual component categories. Each player will be eligible for a single 'major' prize only (i.e., from the categories listed above), with the exception of Best Painted Army.

There shall also be a lucky prize draw each round for a prize. The major prizes are yet to be finalised, but will probably include the latest GW Army Boxed (Subject to Sponsorship) set for Overall Champion, and will step-down accordingly from there for the other prizes. Our famous “Thanks for Coming!” (Last place) shall also receive a plaque and prize!. Geoff had always won this prize and trophy in past tournaments!

REQUIREMENTS

To allow the majority of Geoff's friends and family who wish to play, this years' GJMWT will use 7th Edition rules.

Armies used at Geoff Jose Memorial Warhammer Tournament 2010 must use figures representative of the troops in their army list, but do not need to be painted - but they do look nice painted. "What You See is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) will be enforced. Players using unrepresentative figures will not be able to use the miniature, or will be required to use it in accordance with the figure type and equipment represented. If players have any doubts, they should seek guidance from the organizer prior to fielding the miniature(s) in question. Miniatures made by other manufacturers or scratch-built are more than welcome; just remember they must be representative of what you are trying to portray.

Nominated armies must be drawn from the latest Games Workshop published WFB Army Books, or in the case of Dogs of War and Chaos Dwarfs use the lists on the GW or other reputable website, as they've had minor updates. In all instances, the latest published lists and rule clarifications shall be deemed to be the only such applicable, and these must be released by the event cut-off date of Saturday the 21st of August 2010. Due to the fact that they are not available to all armies, armies from the 'Back of the Book' alternate lists and special/named characters will not be permitted. No Storm of Chaos lists for Dwarfs, Empire, Orcs & Goblins, High Elves, Vampire Counts are allowed as they've all had new books since SoC was released, everything else from the SoC Army Book is ok.

Armies should be of 2250 points or less.

Here is the Power Dice rules:

In a past event, the use of overwhelming Magic Items and Power dice led to a legal, but unbalanced army. Unbalanced armies and those deemed not to be within the spirit of friendship and rememberance that this Tourney embodies, will not be acceptable. The person who submits such a list shall be asked to resubmit a "friendlier" army list once, and once only. If the resubmitted list is not deemed to be "friendly", your entry fee will be refunded in full, and you will not be invited to return.

It is expected that an "average, normal or usual" amount of Power Dice per army will be ten or less. If you wish to have more than this amount of Power Dice for your army, a fee of $10 per Power Dice above 10, will be asked, and that amount shall be donated in your name to The Queensland Cancer Council, for which you will recieve a reciept from them. Persons who have made the donation will not be judged to be unsporting, and will not recieve a "composition hit', nor be thought to be unsporting.

Army lists must be submitted by Saturday the 21th of August 2010 at the latest. All lists will be checked by an experienced Warhammer Player, who will not be attending the Tournament. Their guidance and help is welcome, and I thank them for their assistance; their decision is also final. Please ensure your army list is legible and legal. Army lists can be submitted via email to the Tournament Organizer at blindpig "at" bigpond.com. Players are requested to bring their own pen/pencil, tape or other measuring device, sufficient dice, deodorant, a legible copy of their army list, and copies of the reference materials used to design the army list (eg. WFB Rulebook, WFB Army book etc). Late submission of the forms and Army Lists shall incur a loss of five (5) points from your final score. No exceptions.

Entry Forms

I require entry forms to be filled in and payments to be made by Saturday 21th August 2010. Entry forms will be made available and a link shall be made on the WargamerAU forum or, alternatively, email the T.O. and request a form. Cost for the event is $25 per player ($20 for Blind Pig regulars and QNK and Synthetic Militia members). Payment can be made via money order or direct deposit. Contact me via email to blindpig"at"bigpond.com for any questions or if you are experiencing problems with payment.

All entry forms/money/army lists can be sent together if you wish to:

The Blind Pig
Unit 3 32 Ilya Street
MacGregor
QLD 4109.

You can make a Direct Deposit to:

Rebecca Weir
St George
BSB 114 879
Account Number 482061112

Please ensure your name (or WAU Moniker) is part of the deposit detail!

The first person to get their payment, Entry Form and Army List to the TO shall win a $50 Gift Certificate. from Phoenix Forge.

GAMES

Games will consist of 6 turns, or as many as can be completed within 2.5 hours. We shall be taking a break between the completion of each round and the commencement of the next round. The timings for games will be strictly adhered to. Players will be given 30 minute and 10 minute "warnings" prior to the end of the game. At the 10 minute point, if players are not finished their game already, it is recommended they finish the turn they are on, and end the game at that point. Games will not be allowed to extend into the break. Players deemed to be deliberately delaying so as not to finish the full 6 turn game will be warned once only by the convenor, and will then forfeit any subsequent games where they are deemed to be delaying. Any player noted as completing less than five turns consistently in their games will be first warned and then disqualified; or have their scrotum superglued to the floor.

All games will use the old style "Pitched Battle". The rules to be used are those of the current edition of WFB.

THE DRAW

The Geoff Jose Memorial Warhammer Tournament 2010 will use the "Swiss Chess" system to determine the draw. The first round will be drawn randomly, grudge matches are allowed so long as both players involved in the grudge contact the organizer prior to the event starting. From the second round onwards the draw will be seeded (i.e. you will be paired with an opponent who is on a comparable battle score).Under no circumstances will you play the same player more than once.

CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING THE CATEGORIES

Note: End of game scoring of Sportsmanship & Composition, as well as the Best Painted Army voting is considered by the TO to be confidential information and should be treated by all players as such. Players found breaching the confidentiality of this information will be asked to leave the tournament.

GENERALSHIP

Generalship (game results) will determine the "best general" category and will be worth 60 points of the overall score.

After each game, tally up victory points as normal for a pitched battle scenario (units destroyed, table quarters, captured standards, etc). Determine the number of battle points you score by comparing the margin of victory against the following table:

Victory Point Margin Battle Points

Winner Loser
1/2-300 11 9
301-500 12 8
501-700 13 7
701-900 14 6
901-1100 15 5
1101-1300 16 4
1301-1500 17 3
1501-1700 18 2
1701-1900 19 1
1901+ 20 0

You will be given a results card to fill for each round of the Tournament. Please note that it is the battle points from the table above you need to record here, not the victory point margin. Please ensure that the card is filled out correctly and that both players have signed off on the results and then bring it to the organizer’s desk.

GAMESMANSHIP:

Comes in two parts: 1 is Sportsmanship and 2 is the Composition of the Army and worth 36 points overall.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Sportsmanship will go towards determining the "Best Gamesman" category and also be worth 18 points of the total score. At the end of each game you will be asked to score your opponent against the following criteria:

• Excellent conduct. What more can I say? I wish more players were this good. 5 points
• Above average conduct. More than what I expected. They are a credit to the gaming scene. 4
points
• Average conduct. What I expected. Played within the spirit of the game. 3 points
• Below Average conduct. I expected more. They need to lift their game. 2 points
• Very Poor conduct. Mmmm. Do I need to say more? 1 point
• Deplorable conduct. Expulsion from the event should be considered 0 points

Players will therefore receive a total of between 0 (for not being given any points by any of your opponents) to 15 sportsmanship points (five points each from all three opponents). At the end of the event you will be asked to nominate from the three opponents you faced, one player who stood above all the others when it came to Sporting behavior. Each player that is nominated will receive an extra point, with 3 possible points available. If you believe that you have been pressured or forced by an opponent to give a higher Sportsmanship score than you otherwise would have given, please speak to the TO and privately change your score accordingly.

Please be aware, that Power Dice in excess of the "usual" ten points, is not considered poor Sportsmanship, and not should be poorly judged by you to be unsportsmanly or a badly composed army. The person with more than ten Power Dice has made a donation to charity to have those extra dice, and their decision to field such an army should be warmly welcome and accepted.

COMPOSITION

Composition will contribute to the "Best Gamesman" category, and also be worth 18 points of the total score. Player Judged Composition will be based entirely on your opponent's subjective opinion on the fairness, character and thematic suitability of your army. If it is deemed by your opponent that you have "cheesed out" and aimed to produce an army that is designed only with winning in mind, with no consideration for your opponent's enjoyment or of the army list's thematic background, then he will be expected to mark you poorly. If he deems that you have followed the background of your army list and put together a reasonable army list, he will be expected to score you highly.

At the end of each game you will be asked to compare the army you have just faced to the following criteria:

• This army was eminently suitable for this event. This army isn't rock hard at all 5 points
• This army was very suitable for this event. While competitive it has some weaknesses 4 points
• This army was suitable for this event. It's what I expected to see here. 3 points
• This army was not quite suitable for this event. A touch more competitive army list than I
expected 2 points
• This army was unsuitable for this event. An over the top and tooled out army 1 point
• This army was intolerable for this event. A rock hard army with no chance for the opponent 0
points

Players will therefore receive a total of between 0 (for not being given any points by any of your opponents) to 15 composition points (five points each from all three opponents). At the end of the event you will be asked to nominate from the three armies you faced, one army which stood above all the others when it came to being well composed and suitable for the event. Each army that is nominated will receive an extra point, with 3 possible points available. If you believe that you have been pressured or forced by an opponent to give a higher Composition score than you otherwise would have given, please speak to the TO and privately change your score accordingly.

Please be aware, that Power Dice in excess of the "usual" ten points, is not considered poor Composition, and not should be poorly judged by you to be unsportsmanly or a badly composed army. The person with more than ten Power Dice has made a donation to charity to have those extra dice and their decision should be warmly welcome and accepted.

APPEARANCE:

Army Appearance will determine the "Best Painted Army" category and shall be purely peer-based choice of the best painted Army at the Tournament. Players shall be given an opportunity before the start of the second Round (Lunch time) to view all the armies set out for the start of Round Two on the table you shall be using for Round Two. You will be given name tags to place before your Army to help identify you and your work, and players will mark off their first to fifth best choice of best painted armies. The scores for Best Painted Army shall not be added to the overall scores to determine Overall Champion (lets' face it, Geoff was a nice bloke, but he couldn’t paint for nuts.....). Should there be a tie for first place in this category, an impartial Judge shall be employed by the TO to determine the winner; do not be surprised if this is a nine year old girl, or her drunk father.

Players who did not paint their own army are eligible to enter this completion for votes and the beauty pageant, and may win the "Best Painted Army" award. If the winning Army was not painted by the winner however, the owner of that Army should acknowledge the original artist and come to a gentlemanly arrangement in sharing the prize booty with the original painter. This is however, beyond the control of the Tournament organiser.

TIE BREAKERS:

In the event that two players are tied in scores for a particular award category, secondary and tertiary categories will be used as a fall back to determine the winner:

Tie breakers: 1st 2nd 3rd
Overall Battle: Sports Composition
Painting Judge determined
Best Gamesman: Sports, Composition, Battle
Best General: Sports, Composition, Battle
