I had heard you can use steal wool as a rusty wash like paint to simulate rust.

This is dont by using 20 bags of black tea, and leaving the wool in hot water over night, then drain out the liquid in the morning which gives you a browny rusty ink like product.

Has anyone tried this technique before?

I would have thought it's cheaper and easier and more proven to just buy some rust pigment?

You could just get a few nails and leave them in a jar with water and make rust. Add in some Copper if you want to speed the process up.

Why do you need the tea? surely just using steel wool in water would make a real rust.

Yes the tea is meant to just help darken the pigment or even cause more of a stain.

One way to make instant rust is using steel pads (not the shiny steel wool) and muriatic acid.

Also, a mixture of bleach and vinegar rusts steel wool in no time.

Have you tried using a paintbrush?

Thank you for your expert opinion.

Being that this is a product I'm unfamiliar could you expand on this and how are the best ways to use it? How does it respond to other paint, could you provide helpful hints and useful tips.

I'm really a bit clueless tho I'm quite intrigued about the product.

I think fortis said it the best. There are plenty of products out there that do the effect already without all the hassle, cost and mess of using this method.

I don't think it's that problematic

Personally I like to learn how to do things like this myself rather than just buy it cos its easy
