New rulebook is on the way! Hardback too - looks nice. I really have to give this game a try sometime.

On top of that there are extra models being released. They've fleshed out the RSN Navy - will probably become my second fleet if I start playing more regularly.

Fantastic - with the advent of FSA games, started on the rulebook, and it's really not intuitive compared to the new DW book. those new models are great too - maybe i need to start a zenian fleet too...

cool, the cover looks nice, I like the shielding effect on the MKII cruiser in the background (as it actually has shields), the original cover are had a dindrenzi battleship blasting away a sorylian battleship with broadside (the puny gunracks!).

Picked it up yesterday. looks good.
Had a flick through the DW campaign book as well. Once you trawl through all the badly written rubbish that games companies seem to think is essential these days, the campaign rules look OK. Hopefully the FSA book will have less 'fluff', more rules. Cheers CW -------------------- S.P.Q.R.

Yeah, i'm a fluff junkie - really liked that the new FSA book has doubled the fluff (2 to 4 pp) for each of the factions. And i've bought all the malifaux books, despite never played, just to find out how the meta story went. Fluff is what makes wargaming worth it, otherwise you might as well sit in a corner rolling dice

Personally I prefer well-written rules, interesting and exciting game play, good opponents and attractive and well painted miniatures.
But if grammatically poor, badly structured, derivative, uninteresting tosh targeting semi-illiterate Gen Y wargamers is what grabs you, clearly you are well catered for. You don't even need to play the game. That aside, if there is a reasonable amount of actual gaming material in Marauders of the Rift than I will buy it, and maybe something can be organised for Good Games. Looking forward to a revised edition. With any luck FS will reap the benefits of the revised DW rule set (especially the tiny flier rules).

The Wings rules now appear quite similar to the DW tiny flyers rules. PD is now all or nothing - if you don't drive off, or destroy, all the wings (bombers or assaulters) in the squadron that are attacking, the non-destroyed ones get through and make their attacks. And bomber attacks are now cumulative - so 5 bombers at 3 AD each produce a 15 AD attack. But they only get one, then they have to return to a carrier to rearm.

So with all the vitriole and hate from a few empassioned folk over on Spartan's FSA forum re the new rules (somewhat reminiscent of similar diatribes when other systems have updates their rules), what do Australian FSA players think?
I only played a couple of games under the old rules, and havne't played the new rules but have read them and found them to appear cleaner and simpler (which is kinda why i'm playing FSA, it's my "simple other game" when i need a break from infinity's complexities). But is it true, is FSA now broken? |

I only played a couple of games under the old rules, and havne't played the new rules but have read them and found them to appear cleaner and simpler (which is kinda why i'm playing FSA, it's my "simple other game" when i need a break from infinity's complexities). But is it true, is FSA now broken? From what I've been reading of it, I think a lot of it is "They didn't change it the way I wanted it to be changed" similar to whenever GW releases a new fantasy and 40k ruleset. I mean, seriously, getting that uptight about changes in a few areas? Not cool. From what I've been reading (still waiting on my order), it seems that spartan's done what they did with the DW book - revamped the main ruleset only, and added only a little bit. The original rulebook had 24 ships and only one MAR. Alliance Racial MARs, raiders etc. all came later. From what I can see, spartan has re-released the main rulebook with the basics and the lists, and I suspect that all the optional stuff (the alliance rules were always optional) will come in the campaign book. If some of the stuff they're bringing up is correct, then they may have some legitimate concerns over wording/editing etc, but Spartan is English. The brits have a different attitude towards rules/laws than the yanks, and an different approach to the English language in general. Some of the rule things, however, I think are just people unwilling to let go to their favored systems. Continued boarding actions meant a lot of "paperwork" in between turns, so one-round combat works - it is in DW. The PD rules could be better worded, but see above for that. The Alliance Racial MARs I suspect will be in the campaign book due in August. The destroyers are now more similar to each other (although I'm still trying to think of ways that they can be used effectively). The new carriers are interesting, but their cost limits their use to larger games, so that balances out Tactics points...I was 50-50 on those anyway. Silly thing to get uptight about, IMO. Ramming...yeah, was interesting, but at that scale, rams are going to be difficult. It'll be interesting to see how this "issue" plays out. If Spartan has any sense, they'll just ignore it and the complainers will go away, and updates/erratas will be issued. But if the noise continues, I think those with the loudest voices will find themselves banned from the forums, and Black Ocean will no longer get favored status with SG (which will be a pity, given the amount of resources on that site). Personally, I'm gonna play the new rules, but this (to be quite honest) childish approach to the new edition is seriously making me rethink wanting to demo this game to new players. If I do, and the newbies like the game, they might end up on the SG forums, see the whining and think "I dont want to be a part of this community", and go to a somthing else instead. Got the new rulebook in front of me but haven't read it all yet...
MARs are in. Alliance fleets are in. From my quick look all the current ships are in (including Mk2s where appropriate). -------------------- Paul * aka emplion aka Admiral (Firestorm Armada) aka Chapter Master (EPIC) aka Coach (Blood Bowl) aka Warcaster (Warmachine) aka Warlock (Hordes) aka Mercenary Captain (Mordheim) aka Star Captain (Battletech) aka Brother Paulus (Space Hulk)

Spartan Ricky has started weighing in on the...conversation. And one of his first response showed that he is not entirely pleased.
What is intruguing was his explanation as to why the racial MARs were taken out. This is getting interesting... -------------------- Twin Cities Gamers - Wulguru Community Centre, Townsville, every Sunday
