Ozpainters Open Painting Competition Rules General Rules:

Any miniature from any manufacturer. Any base may be used for your model

model both in terms of size and style.

Plinths are allowed but will not be considered in the judging except as a
negative when they are oversized as compared to the model they hold.

Entry Fee
There are now 2 levels of entry fee.
You pay $5 for entering up to three categories and $10 for an entry into all
the categories. The fee covers running the event and provision of trophies.

You may enter each category only once.
Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded for all categories with a
special under 17s trophy for each category. Judging will be based on the
Open format with multiple gold, silver and bronze medals based on an
individual model’s merit, rather than a competitive 1st, 2nd & 3rd basis.
This means that even if you aren’t amongst the best three painters in the
competition you still may be awarded a medal!

Models will be judged on painting and modeling skill and overall appearance.
Basing is considered but the appearance of the ‘hero’ model is much more

Entries that have previously won trophies in other national competitions may
not be entered in the Open.

Entries may be entered in person, by a friend on your behalf or by post.
If you enter a miniature by post you MUST include self addressed packaging
of sufficient size, with postage paid, to get your model back to you.
We cannot take responsibility for items that go astray in the mail so
express post satchels are recommended so at least there is some level of

Look at the thread on Ozpainters for more details about where to post your
entries to.

Single Miniature:
Any single model from any manufacturer where the actual miniature is no
taller or longer than 50mm in any direction (not including
banners/scenery/basing etc). Mounted minis may be slightly taller than this
but are included in this category.
Models may be from any period including real world historical miniatures.
The miniature should fit its base comfortably and not appear unbalanced or
be overpowered by its base. The actual scale of the model is not important
but it’s size is.

Large miniature
This category covers all miniatures larger than those covered in the single
It includes large monsters such as ogres and dragons, warjacks, dreadnaughts
and large scale models up to 90mm scale.
Basing is up to the competitor but again will be judged for appropriateness.

This category covers all vehicles and crewed warmachines.
Crewed warmachines are entered here if only one warmachine is present. A
group of ballista or battery of cannons would be entered in the unit

Unit, squad or battleforce
Any coherent unit, squad of up to 20 models or skirmish battleforce of up to
10 models may be entered in this category. Batteries of warmachines and
squadrons of vehicles are also entered here.
There is a minimum of 3 models for this category.
Units or squads need not be game legal but must appear to be a coherent unit
or force.
Once again basing is up to the competitor but it will be judged for

Up to 15mm squad, unit or battleforce
The entry should consist of 10 or more models of a 15mm or smaller scale. It
can include vehicles or warmachines and may be of any period or genre.
The entry may be a single unit or an entire army - it’s up to you.
Judges will be looking for a well painted, coherent force. Historical
accuracy will not be considered (unless you paint a sherman tank pink or
something silly like that ) Models may be based in any way you see fit but
please bear in mind that over the top basing will detract from your entry.

Go wild. This category covers everything not noted above. You can enter
125mm scale busts, dioramas, scratch built full scale props (i.e.
lazguns, swords, huge wolfen statues).
This category will be judged partly on painting and partly on a general
coolness factor so your imagination can run riot.

Conversion/sculpting (subcategory)
If you have converted your model or sculpted it from scratch let us know
when you enter it and we will consider your model for the special “Best
Conversion or sculpt” prize.
Ideally you should give us an idea of what you have done and, if
possible, a picture of the original miniature in its unconverted state -
just an image of how the miniatute would look if built how it was intended.
This will help us judge how well you have done.
If you have sculpted your own model a WIP shot would be appreciated.
This is not a full category and is judged separately to the quality of
your paintjob.
Full sculpted models need not be painted at all.
We will be looking at the neatness of
your work, the coolness factor of the new conversion and how well the
conversion keeps the balance of the model (i.e. does the model look like
a collection of random bitz or does it appear to be a coherent miniature)

We'll once again be awarding The Executioner for best in show so get
