Alright everyone, I need your mathematical brains.

I'm trying to work out a damage system for Pokemon Journeys. Before you give me your ideas, a little info on how stats are worked out. We'll use my personal fav, Bulbasaur, as the example: http://pokemondb.net/pokedex/bulbasaur

In the videogame, Bulbasaur has the following base stats:

HP: 45
Atk: 49
Def: 49
SpAtk: 65
SpDef: 65
Speed: 45

For the tabletop game, we divide these stats by 10 and round up or down, which gives us:

HP: 5
Atk: 5
Def: 5
SpAtk: 7
SpDef: 7
Speed: 5

Now, there's two things I'm trying to accomplish here, and that is:
a) how do we work out how much HP a Pokemon has
b) how do we work out damage rolls to correlate to those HP amounts

Currently, the system goes as follows:
1) Roll damage
2) Add Atk or SpAtk stat
3) Apply weaknesses or resistances
4) Subtract Def or SpDef stat of defending pokemon
5) Deal left over damage

Now, in the video game, each move is given a Power Rating, which mostly goes up in 10's, from 10 to 120. What I want to do is convert these Power Ratings into Dice Rolls for dealing damage, making sure they correlate with whatever HP system we work out.

Suggestions Scott and I have come up with so far are:
- Multiply the HP stat by 10 to get your Pokemon's total HP
- Multiply the HP stat by 3 to get your Pokemon's total HP

- Divide Power Ratings by 10 to give a single digit number

- Add this number to a dice roll (this system was rejected, as Tackle has PR 40, and Earthquake has PR 100 - dividing by 10 means there's only 6 points of base damage difference between a Tackle and an Earthquake)

- Roll this many dice (Tackle PR 4 = 4d6 + Atk dmg). This could work, my only concern is the slow battles due to time spent adding numbers together each attack.

- Categorize the PR system to equal a certain dice (PR10 - 20 = 1d6, PR20 - 30 = 1d8, PR30 - 40 = 1d10 etc.) Problem with this is that there isn't enough dice, and no I don't want to use weird numbered dice, just the standard RPG set.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them!!

The recent playtest was an enormous amount of fun, if you have a heart beat and a passing interest in gaming or pokemon then you will enjoy this game; even if you only have a heart beat, the rest will come after you sit down to play, trust me wink.gif

To celebrate this success, I have found a couple of Pokemon Trainer Character creators on deviantart.com, much like the ones I used for D&D, so you too can try out some styles for your Trainer or Ranger or Breeder or whatever. I've made a couple of Researchers already and I think they turned out great!

Dave: Hmmm, that's a good question. We weren't playing it that way, and I don't think that's the case in the games either. So I'd say no.

Yari: Yeah, just another name for your Character sheet. You'll also have a "Pokedex", which is just another name for your Pokemon's character sheets.

Sorry, I would have replied earlier but I pulled some muscles trying to jump up so fast, then I realised that jumping up and down in front of my computer isn't an effective way of conveying the large amount of interest I have for taking part in this playtest armata_PDT_04.gif
