So Chapter Approved 2018 is out.
I just wanted to share some excitement for the new year of 40k!
This is really the first time after all codexes (ok, most) are released, and a full year of gaming of 8th edition, and I feel that this is where this edition can really reap the benefit of the new structure. A rebalancing of units points across the board! I’m very happy to see GW attempt to make all units relevant, or at least try to increase the range outside of those few spammed key efficient units per codex.
I mean, I could almost maybe bring a reasonable Chaos army with Terminators and a Land Raider now. Sure, there might still be Cultists and Obliterators but at the very least there will be more variety in units right?
A bunch of characters have been reduced, which seems pretty safe since they can’t be spammed.
Lots of weapons costs reduced.
WraithKnight Saithis?
Guard seem even more powerful Harrow!
Firefox, have you SEEN the points reductions in Necrons?!
Ok, sure, still no one will bring DropPods. They need to be 30pts, not 63.
Any other thoughts?

Haven't had a chance to fully go over, but the Custodes list (2000) I was toying with dropped 186 points, 65 of which was their character as you say most named ones took a drop to make them more useable.

Droppods are overpriced still for what they do & to make them worth the points they'd need new rules but I feel that would put them back on the must have/broken side of things again.

Look forward to reading though it more.

Meh. Didn't really change my lists. I will now run a Tank Commander as opposed to a regular Russ in my lower point games.

IMO the game changer for the guard will be the new Specialist Detachments. I am very tempted to rework my guard into an Emperor's Fist Tank Company special detachment for Infernus. Too bad you can't give Pask the specialist Warlord Trait and Reilc.

But then again chasing the meta is a money sapping, never ending road.

Bit late on this discussion, but anyways overall it seems ok.
I have only used marines so far, so its nice to see them get points reductions especially bikes - it must be the Emperors blessings wink.gif
Not sure on the meta as Ive only played 2 games in 8th ed so far.

Does anyone actually play the missions from chapter approved (including the 2017 one) or just stick with the main rulebook missions / ITC missions?

Heya, we’ve played a bunch of different missions over the year as new missions have become available.
Some original rules Eternal War/ Malstrom, then the new versions from Chapter Approved last year, then some Open War deck, then some ITC missions. In Tumult we played simplified ITC rules which worked well. The new Eternal War New Chapter Approved look interesting too. Things seem to be moving in favour of earning points per round, which I think favours fun close games and probably fairness generally.

Space marines got a little help, which was nice, although for most people it probably won't be enough at the top tier. My most competitive list got some modest points drops though, about 20 pts off on a dreadnought, which has given me enough wiggle room to try mixing in something new at cancon 2019.....

working on it tonight:

This bad boy is going to help me dump all those near-useless space marines CPs into something a bit more distracting for my opponent smile.gif

The new primaris detachment gives some very strong stratagems to intercessors, giving them the ability to fire twice, and is worth considering in an infantry army. This makes an already somewhat decent troop unit into a very good unit.

I'm probably going to build the new ultramarines detachment at some point for a bit of fun and fluff, and the new calgar model looks great.

Overall chapter approved 2018 and the new campaign book are pretty good, I don't think they did quite enough to address the balance in top tier competitive play - The points drops to trash tier units are not enough to make them competitive, and largely, the most competitive units dominating the meta are untouched. However, those drops do make some popular units (eg terminators, crisis suits, land raiders, wraithknights) just good-enough to maybe cut the mustard in friendly games without being a big handicap, and the new asymmetrical narrative scenarios look like fantastic fun.

It has been a very positive step for casual games biggrin.gif
