Gosford Flames 2015 (Late War)

Flames of War Tournament
3 x 1550 pts,
Sun January 11th 2015
10:00am - 6:30pm
Good Games Gosford

Gosford Flames is a relaxed, fun, one day tournament for Flames of War. It is planned to have several of these events throughout the year, covering different periods of WW2.

This event will consist of 3 rounds of 1550 points (LW) games. This point limit has been chosen to allow players to use this event as practice for the Cancon Late War tournament. There will be 2 hrs 30 minutes allowed for each game, including filling out the score sheets at the end of the game.

There will be prizes and certificates for Best Allied General and Best Axis General. These prizes will be awarded to the players with the most Wins, with ties resolved by referring to Battle Points.

There will also be a prize awarded at the end of the day for each round, with the prize going to the player with the most Battle Points for that mission. Thus there will be something to play for in each round.

The Players Pack is attachedAttached File  Gosford_Flames_2015__LW__Players_Pack.pdf ( 169.71k ) Number of downloads: 68

Hi Mark,

Not sure if I'm listed as a 'possible' already? Steven Gibb - Russians, we emailed a while back, I'll pay on the day.

I'm also fairly certain that Conrad Carlton is coming with Germans.

Cheers

Comments

I was very happy with the event. Somewhat fortunously we ended up with 6 allied and 5 German players,
so of the 15 games that took place 13 were allied vs axis.

The points limit of 1550 pts and the round times of 2:30 were to align with what was going to be used at Cancon. I think that around 1500 pts is a good size, but I would tweak the times for the games. Most rounds a couple of games would finish in an hour and only one or two games would take the whole 2:30. At around 1500 pts I would think that we should aim for 2:20 or 2:15 for each round. This would mean finishing half an hour or 45 mins earlier. I have an aversion to finishing after 6:00pm on a Sunday night.

I like the idea of Best Allied General and Best German General awards/prizes. In my mind the two are of equivalent status, and the prizes were of equal value.

I'm not sure how I feel about the round prizes. It was designed so that even if you bombed in 2 games, doing well in a single game would be recognised. I may in future just have a prize for the person who gets the most points in the final round, with ties broken by the most number of points overall.

In terms of scoring, when 4 out of 5 games in round one resulted in 6-1 scores (and the other one a 5-2) I was worried that we may not have clear winners (Best Allied and Best Axis) at the end of the day. With only 3 rounds and 9+ players we could end up with 2 players going through undefeated. This is why there was a German-German matchup (and corresponding USA-Canadian matchup) in round 2.

Across the 15 games, there were 9 x 6-1 results, 4 x 5-2 results, 1 x 4-3 and one 3-2 (loss-loss in Dust Up mission). I will have to check the forums to see what other events are doing with their scoring to spread the results a bit more.

Regards

Mark C
