Apocalypse....

We use to play it quite a bit. 3000, 5000, 25000 points per side games. When it came out we would get small games like 3000 or 5000 done in under a day, the larger games would go into the night.
Does anybody play Apoc any more or has it faded to memory?
We are going to get back into smaller 3000 point per side games just to dust off our bigger toys. I was just wondering if the rest of the world still plays.

I reckon 30K prolly fills that void now.

Our gang never really played apocalypse though either. We just played 40k with lots of armies per side

The WATT group still plays - just a couple of themed Apoc games each year (Sisters vs Chaos, Tyranids vs Imperium, etc) at around 15,000 points per side.

For some of us, those are the only 40k games we play these days wink.gif

I bought into when it was first released, but it was such amess of ridiculous rules I never enjoyed it that much, we already played 5k games with the standard rules so we were pretty happy already.

Yeah 30k is the new black at the moment, I know the rules for apoc did get pretty out of hand. Some of the strategic assets were ludicrous and were out right banned in our groups ( looking at you reinforcements and flank march! ).

It's great to see a few guys still playing it, we really enjoyed it for the sheer scale and it was a great excuse to bring out the big toys. The only real negative we found was that it was a very time consuming game to play, otherwise it was pretty cool.

My favourite one was the Nids, give all foot troop infiltrate, then combined with the Warlords everyone can run and charge.. made for some short games

That was always what turned me off Apocalyspe. Just having half your army wiped out by whatever insane broken rule pops up was always a bit of a downer.

Still, had some fun times, generally when we were selective on what was used.

I just like the DL ravager formation that would come in and kill a Warhound form reserves.

And in a game where we knew we were playing long ways (on about 24' of table) I did field the 10 Basilisk battery> that once one hits all the rest hit the same spot. That was just stupid. the super hvs were not happy.

I do wonder if the game would be fairer if the first shooting phase was done at the same time somehow. Maybe, just don't remove the models till after... Not sure if that would work.

I see where you are going Da Smas. Maybe have turn one on night fighting rules so everyone gets a cover save of some sort. That will save your key/prettiest units form being vanquished before they step off?

Would be a great house rule.

Perhaps but does that not just delay things to be honest.

If BOTH sides get devestatrd at the same time not just the one unlucky enough not to go first would it not be better? Other wise say if there is say a warlord on each side, what's going to happen is everything is gonna focus on the walord then the normal one will ( depending on weps) finish it off. But if both armies get to fire or maybe just get to fire just the super heavies in maybe a pre turn 1 then everyone gets to see their cool models do something before they die

Definitely some value in that. It could always be a bit of an activation process. So select units to fire. Maybe.

Either or I haven't really thought about the details tbh but could warrant some testing.

Smoke screen stratigum did reduce first turn shooting a fair bit.. I know I used it in a few games to get my troop heavy nids accross the board without just getting blown up

Yeah, it could work.

It sounds like I'm down on Apocalypse, I actually really like it. It's just about fine tuning some of the challenging bits.

I see one big issue with that. Lets say each side has 3 superheavies, a full round of shooting from each would do some serious damage, the player that goes first could very well win the game first turn. Hell if you get the right result when blowing up a superheavy a side could be decimated before the first turn. Concentrate fire and hope they blow and take huge chunks with them when they go boom.
