The new edition of SAGA has been released, and the SAGA v2 rule book and the Age of Vikings supplement are now available.

Note that the rule book is just the rules (unlike v1) and designed to be used for all three periods (Dark Ages, Crusades and Arthurian). Each of the three periods will have its own supplement and contain all the faction rules and battle boards, though only Age of Vikings is available in the initial release.

You can get it locally at War and Peace Games, and it is also available from overseas retailers.

It looks like War and Peace has cut the price of the superseded rules and supplements by 50%, so if you wanted to pick up anything from old version check them out.

For previews of the new edition, check out the links under the pictures.

I'll be interested to hear what the battle boards are like. It got to the point that if you didn't spend time pre-game studying your opponent's battle board, as well as your own, you weren't going to have much fun.

And I find life is too short for studying for wargaming...

I have heard interviews with the designers where they state that their original objective was to develop a fun game that you could play after having a couple of beers, so its not as complicated as some historical rule sets.

In v1 SAGA there were 16 different factions (some with their own subfactions, but the same battleboard) for the Viking age.

In v2 SAGA the Age of Vikings has 12 different lists/battleboards. Some of the previous factions were merged together (eg Bretons & Normans?), and apparently there are some new factions. They are all meant to be balanced against other factions from that era.

I haven't seen the new rules or supplement yet, but at least 12 battle boards is less than 16.
