So, a nice big box arrived today, filled with the first part of my Sedition Wars rewards smile.gif

I've spent the last two hours washing all the pieces, here they are, all laid out:
IPB Image

Lots of bits!

I have a terrible track record of not finishing projects, but I intend to change that this year, starting with getting all these painted up, hopefully before the second lots shows up in a few months.

Not shows is the resin Kara model, by the way. Will paint her separately probably.

Ok, today's update:

I haven't touched the hobby in about six months, and it's been longer since I was really productive, so my hobby desk was a dusty disaster, had to spend the morning cleaning up before I could start working on my new pretties.
Ended up undercoating the first batch at around 6pm:
IPB Image

All the bases, and all 8 copies of the pose I'm calling Stage 1A. I plan to knock the strain out pose by pose for ease of replicating the paintjob. I tweaked each model slightly with hot water to add some variety to the poses.

A couple hours later, here was a finished Space Zombie:
IPB Image
IPB Image
(I know if my final minutes were spent being zombified by a crazy nanovirus, my pants would look like that)

The colour scheme is based off the Husks in Mass Effect - dead grey skin, glowing blue and metal cybernetics. It was... less successful that I'd hoped. I'm our of practice painting, and the glow effects don't pop like I hoped. Still, for about three hours work for all 8, I'm happy enough. I don't want to get bogged down and end up with a bunch of unfinished models - this will do for the grunts.

Next up were the bases. I had no real idea what I wanted them to look like - clean hi tec, or dirty metal? And since I lacked a plan, I thought they'd end up disappointing. How wrong I was, they turned out better than I could have dreamed, and I'm incredibly pleased with them, especially with the glow effects and the blood (finally found a recipe for that).
IPB Image
IPB Image

The end result of about 5 1/2 hours work (once the models had been pinned to their bases):
IPB Image

I'm pretty satisfied with them smile.gif It's nice to be painting again, I'm just very rusty.

Please leave any feedback, good or bad. Comments keep me motivated!

Fantastic work mate...they look awesome!!! These are the first models from this box set I have seen painted other than the studio stuff. You've done a great job on them....and yeah, the bases look fantastic...

Seeing that last pic of the groups makes me realise how cool they'll look on the board in action, lumbering towards the good guys whilst they are blazing away at these horrors!!!

...what was your blood recipe?

An unscientific mixing of Vallejo GC Gory Red, Black and Smokey Ink. Mostly red, with a small amount of the black and Ink, I'd guess around 70/10/20%

Not much progress today, I was out for most of the day, so didn't get time to prep and undercoat any more models. I did finish another batch of bases though. I tried a few different glow colours this time. Opinions? Turquoise is the best, I think, followed by blue and purple.

IPB Image

Feedback is always welcome, of course smile.gif

Also, I made a tutorial:

Since I got some nice feedback for my bases, I thought I'd do a tutorial on how to do them. They look nice, but are really pretty easy to crank out, about 2 1/2 hours per batch of 8, but that includes breaks between colours to watch the Aus Open final.

Here's the prototypes I did yesterday:
IPB Image

So, starting with a black undercoated base, the first step is painting all the metallic parts dark silver. I use a ~50/50 mix of Vallejo Game Colour (all paints are VGC unless mentioned) Black and Citadel chainmail.
IPB Image

The second step is to paint all the panels that will be white with several thin coats of Wolf Grey. Don't worry too much about neatness.
IPB Image

That done, highlight all the metal parts with Citadel Chainmail.
IPB Image

Then highlight all the panels again, this time with several thin coats of Dead White.
IPB Image

I forgot to take a picture of the next step, but it scarcely needs one. Highlight all the metal one last time with a bright silver, such as Citadel Mithril Silver of Vallejo Model Air Chrome.

Now onto the things that make it pop!

For the turquoise glow, start by painting all the parts you want to be lights with a 50/50 mix of Jade Green and Electric Blue. (the same steps will apply to any other colour)
IPB Image

Then water that colour down to a thin glaze. Using only a small amount, glaze the area in front of and around the light. Because you're glazing white, the colour will show up easily, so you only need a very small amount. Stroke the glaze in the direction of the light to prevent lines of pigment at the edge of the wash.
IPB Image

Finally, add white to the original colour and progressively highlight the light itself several time.
IPB Image

The blood effects are a ~65/10/25 mix of Gory Red, Black and Smoky Ink, dabbed on with an old brush. You can use a detail brush to paint on bloody footprints or fingermarks from some bloodied survivor being dragged off.

For this batch, I experimented with a bunch of different colours. I think the turquoise is the best, but I also like the blue and purple. Some of my red and yellow paints need replacing after my break from painting I think.

End result, ready for some action:
IPB Image

Please let me know what you think, and I hope somebody out there finds this useful smile.gif I intend to keep playing around with different ideas on the other bases, so I'll post any updates I think of.

Nice work and thanks for taking the time to do a tutorial.

I really like the turquoise and the blue....the purple is ok....red is too hard to distinguish from the blood and the green just doesn't cut the mustard I don't think...I think most lighting like this is a brighter green, which would probably look good, this green is to earthy in tone I think...

Really like the bases. The 2 blues looks great, but I have to agree with awesomeshotdude on the red getting missed amongst the blood and the green not looking quite right. Not bright enough maybe.

Also, would it not be easier to do all the metal first, and then do the white?
