This year's Flames of War Campaign covers the race to get to Berlin from Normandy, Italy and The USSR.

The campaign is divided into a series of small "mini campaigns" each covering 1-2 months of real time. Games will be 1400 to 2000 points in size as agreed between opponents. Players can play in all three theatres and do not have to be on the same side in all three. For example you could be British in Normandy, Soviet on the Eastern front and German in Italy.

Game results will be tabled for each theatre and the side winning the mini campaign in each theatre will get a small bonus in the next mini campaign in that theatre. In addition if the Allies win a mini campaign then they will advance closer to Berlin changing the terrain mix and the books used to compile army lists.

To start with we have: June 1944

Normandy. The Allies are successfully ashore but now have to drive inland and expand their bridgehead. All Armies must come from Atlantik Wall or Overlord. Terrain should include villages, fields, farms, woods, streams and marsh. Hills should be at a minimum.

Italy. Rome has fallen but German resistance continues to be fierce. All armies must come from Fortress Italy and Road to Rome. Germans infantry units cannot give panzerfausts to all teams in an infantry platoon. Terrain should include plenty of hills, farms and villages and sometimes a stream.

The Eastern Front. Army Group Centre is under massive attack by the Soviets and is fighting for survival. All armies must come from Red Bear and Grey Wolf. Hetzers are not yet in service and so cannot be used. Terrain should be generally devoid of hills but include plenty of woods, marshes and villages.

The campaign is under way with mixed fortunes for both sides.

In Normandy the British push towards Caen was stopped cold with heavy losses but on the Eastern Front the Soviet breakthrough is gathering momentum.

Points thus far:

Normandy - Allies 1, Axis 6

Eastern Front - Soviets 5, Axis 2

The Eastern Front. The Soviet steamroller continues with the German mobile defence being slowly swallowed up. Soviets 9 to German 5.

Normandy. The Americans have an easier time of it than the Brits as they push towards St Lo. Allies 6 to Germans 8.

Italy. Initial attacks by Indian Infantry stretch the German defences but are eventually repulsed with heavy losses on both sides. In the American sector an armoured thrust catches the German infantry as they are withdrawing to a better defensive position. Despite putting up a desperate defence the Germans are eventually overwhelmed - but US losses are so high that they are unable to exploit the victory. Allies 8 to Germans 8

The Eastern Front. The Soviet juggernought is faltering as it's lead elements are cut off by mobile Axis counterattacks and destroyed. Axis losses are heavy though and the Soviet follow up forces show no sign of halting. Soviets 15, Axis 13

Normandy. Both sides are reorganising and building up for the next phase. Allies 6 Germans 8.

Italy. After carefully assembling a counterattack force the Germans were forced to commit it in a vain attempt to stop a bold Polish attack. The Allies suffered heavy casualties but eventually broke through thanks in the main to the German anti-tank guns being issued with defective ammunition. Allies 12, Germans 11.

Phase 1 of the campaign has ended and the results are as follows:

Normandy - Axis win 16 to 12. In the next phase the Germans will get a free reluctant trained 88 and command stand in every game.

Eastern Front - Soviets win 15 to 13. In the next phase the Soviets will get a free platoon of 1 Stug III or Panzer IV (Confident trained and ROF 1) in every game.

Italy - Axis win 17 to 13. In the next phase the Axis will get a free 50mm pak 38 bunker in every game.

The next campaign phase covers July/August 44 and the books used remain the same.

Points start from zero again on each front.

The Eastern front has erupted into life anew with the Soviets smashing the German lines, suffering a major reverse then regouping and forcing the Germans to withdraw again. However Soviet losses were heavy and the lead elements were too weak to press their advantage. Soviets 14: Germans 14

In Normandy the British again tried to break through the German lines around Caen but the attack was repulsed with heavy loss. Allies 1: Germans 6

More fighting on the Eastern front as the Soviets give it everything in their efforts to break through. The German line is holding but only just. Soviet 22 to German 20

In Italy the US probed forward with a mechanised recon force hoping to discover a weak point in the German defences. They found one but a swift counter punch by the local German reserves cut off the lead elements and destroyed them. Germans 4 to Allies 3

In Normandy the Allies are still building up and waiting for the right opportunity to punch a hole in the German defences.

All the action has been in Normandy over the last 2 weeks with desperate fighting blunting both the British and American offensives. German losses have been heavy but the line has held so far and a small amount of ground has been regained. Allies 11: Germans 17.

The second phase of the campaign has concluded.

Eastern Front. The Soviets continued to grind away at the Axis defences with the final result 26 to 23 in the Soviet's favour. The Soviets now get a once per game airstrike for free.

Italy. Despite several very one sided battles the front stabilised and the result of 14 points each means neither side gains an advantage for the next stage of the campaign.

Normandy. The Axis maintained their advantage and held back the Allies long enough to retrieve many damaged tanks. Axis 20 to Allies 15. The Axis now get a single trained Panzer IV for free as these retrieved tanks are now put back into service.

Books used for Italy and the Eastern Front remain the same but as the fighting moves to the Westwall and Arnhem the Bridge by Bridge and Blood Guts and Glory books may now be used. In addition 76mm Shermans are now available in numbers for the Western Allies as are panzerfausts, Hetzers and Tiger II for the Axis. The Soviets can use SU85M.

On the Western front an aggressive push by American armoured forces was stopped cold while suffering heavy casualties. Axis 6 to Allies 1.

On the Eastern Front the turncoat Rumanian armoured forces were crushed by the Wiking SS Panzer Division before they could contribute anything to the Soviet cause. The Rumanian light armour proving no match for panzer IVs. Axis 6 to Soviets (and allies) 1.

In Italy both sides are building up after the stalemate that has developed there.

Warsaw has risen against the Axis forces stationed there. The local security forces, supported by a few scattered Army units stopped the revolt spreading and inflicted a heavy defeat on the Polish. However a second attempt by the Axis (now with front line army units) to defeat the rebels was thwarted with heavy losses to both sides

Eastern front Axis 15 to Soviet/Poles 6.

Western Front

The US launched an attack on the Westwall but it was repulsed with heavy losses.
Axis 6 Allies 1

Italy

An attempt to force through a mountain pass by heavy tanks (churchills) supported by Indian infantry initially made good progress and seemed assured of success. Somehow desperate counterattacks by infantry supported by a few Brummbars managed to destroy the leading tank platoons while a roaming armoured car platoon caught the supporting Indian infantry in the open while moving up. The Allied attack was turned back.
Axis 6 Allies 1

Eastern front

A local counterattack by German infantry supported by assault guns caught the Soviets off guard and their leading elements were destroyed before their heavy tank reserve could intervene.
Axis 5 Soviets 2

Warsaw. After several small counterattacks on the Polish insurgents the Axis finally was able to assemble a force deemed sufficient to retake the city. Despite receiving no assistance from the nearby Soviet forces the Poles had nonetheless managed to aquire a tiger tank, several Panthers, panzer IVs and armoured cars together with several batteries of 105mm artillery.

In an epic struggle the Axis recaptured the city but suffered significant losses in armoured vehicles and guns.

This was a 5000 points per side game fought on a large city table. The Axis fielded a Security company (reluctant trained) supported by army panzergrenadier units Confident Veteran) and a Panzer grenadier company (confident Veteran) supported by tanks. The Poles fielded an assortment of conscript and trained platoons - all rated fearless, supported by several companies of Soviets POWs who escaped from a prison camp during the course of the game.

The Autumn battles are over and Winter has set in.

Western Front. The Westwall has held and now the Germans are preparing a massive counterattack.

German bonus. If the Germans are the attacker then 1 platoon may make a spearhead move. This is in addition to any spearhead moves already permitted - but the same platoon may not make 2 such moves. If defending then the first reserve dice rolled will be successful on a 2+ rather than a 5+.

Books in use - the new Ardennes/ battle of the bulge books

Italy. A stalemate has developed with neither side gaining an advantage.

Bonus - none

Books in use - unchanged

Eastern Front. Warsaw has retaken by the Germans and the Soviet juggernaught was (temporarily) halted.

German Bonus. The soviets are now thrusting into Western Europe and the Germans are using every resource they have to stop them.

In games where the Germans are defending they may deploy on table a platoon of Volksturm/ second line garrison troops/wounded consisting of 6 rifle bases and a smg/faust command base rated as Reluctant conscript. They are deployed dug in and in addition to the forces normally allowed on table at the start of the game.

Books in use - Desperate measures. Red Bear can only be used to field nationalities and company types not found in Desperate measures. If Red Bear is used the Germans may field a company from Grey Wolf if they desire.

The Eastern front has exploded into action with a series of hard fought battles. The Axis have a narrow advantage at this stage over the Soviets (15 points to 13points) as their line just manages to hold.

In Italy a counterattack by the Germans has local success but they are still hard pressed to hold off the Allies (Axis 4 to Allies 3)

Eastern front - The German line is holding but by the barest of margins - Germans 18 to Soviet 17

Italy- The Allies are now starting to make progress as the Axis can spare little to shore up the Italian front - Allied 8 to German 6

Western front - The Ardennes offensive has finally launched and the initial attacks have not gone well for the Germans. The SS Panzers in the North have at least made some progress but leading the Southern front attacks with reluctant trained Volksgrenadiers has proved costly as counterattacking US armour drove them back to their start line. Allies 9 to Germans 5

The Ardennes offensive is in full swing and it is not going well for the Germans Despite a couple of minor successes the Germans have also sufferred a couple of major defeats and the offensive is in danger of petering out.

Allies 21 to Germans 14

From now until the club closes at the end of the month all the latest of the late war books are now also in use.

The race to Berlin is over and the winner is - the Western Allies.

The Germans managed to hold back the Soviet tide (just) but their failed Ardennes offensive led to the collapse of their western front defence.
