At the end of the day Charles... I am telling you now that we will run the top 10 most popular Codex's, however, if we cant get them all to balance out, we will look at next-most popular lists as well. We did this last year with Imperial Guard, nobody had an Imperial Guard army we had access to readily (problem now solved, and dont worry, I have plenty of soft units too) and they still werent that popular in SA, so to save face and maintain list integrity we did not include them.

As it were, there was some feedback the Nid list was not balanced enough, and I will make consideration to have not too soft lists in there specifically, but at the same time you dont want to let scales tip too far.

Also, have a look at the lists from last year, and the Daemon list in particular, I think you will find it was able to deal with anything else that was potentially put on the table in front of them... and in fact, was made with some very efficient and effective units to make up for its potential issues.

QUOTE(Charlie_W @ Jul 20 2011, 10:52 AM) *

Nids and Tau aren't the best books out there but they're significantly stronger than Daemons.

A strong...Tau list is on par with a moderate GK/BA/SW/IG list.

I would have to disagree with you there on both points.
1. I actually cannot recall ever winning against Daemons with my Tau (I WOULD have won a game against them at Incitatus last year...only it was the "kill your own commander" mission...and I accidentally managed to beat a Daemon Prince in close combat with my Shas'O tongue.gif ).
2. I have never felt on-par with a Blood Angel or Space Wolf list. Neither has Neil tongue.gif
QUOTE(neil @ Jul 20 2011, 11:24 AM) *

It can't compete with moderate BA/SW/IG.

QUOTE(Charlie_W @ Jul 20 2011, 10:52 AM) *

do you think...it to be a legitimate competitive event if it involved...Necrons?

Have you ever played against Necrons? I find you'd be lucky to kill a half-dozen models before the game is out...they r teh broken. Every game I've played against Necrons have been a mammoth effort, mostly to little success.

QUOTE(neil @ Jul 20 2011, 11:24 AM) *

Every win with Tau is ground out by the skin of my teeth. Way more luck dependant than Daemons - one bad shooting phase and you lose...Get your deployment and target priority right, that's all pretty much.

Truer words ne'er hath been spoken tongue.gif

Comphammer is withering and dying. It's only a matter of time until that abomination is just a bad memory. Mech going no-comp is the sign of things to come.

Daemons are bad. Necrons are also bad (unless they get a new book before Nov). Tau aren't great but they are better than Daemons and Necrons. Nids are another step up from Tau. I understand if it's a logistics thing that determines the final mix, but I really hope you try to get Nids or Tau instead of Daemons. Alternatively, consider that 5th Ed codexes are capable of generating multiple viable builds (e.g. BA DoA is a very different army to BA mech from the same book) so doubling-up on a codex isn't a bad thing.

I know that I have no right to tell a TO how to run his event and that's not what I'm trying to do; I'm just offering honest feedback on what I think will be a big detriment to the tournament. At the end of the day you'll do what you have to do.

No - Mech going no comp is a sign of me deciding it would be no comp - nothing else

Next year I may decide something else- that's the TOs prerogative. Interestingly NH was no comp and numbers were well down - so maybe it's 40k in general that's withering

Opinion is one thing, opinion stated as fact but not supported by evidence (SA results show demons are a better performing codex in SA than Tau or Nids if you analyze placings vs times used) comes across badly.

It wasn't a big detriment last year so why should it be this year?

I should say, that last year it was an experimental system, and after going with gut feeling and pulling it off with nearly no negative feedback, I dont really have any reservations about basically doing the same thing again... this time expanding to allow a few more players smile.gif

Oh, and Re Comphammer.

Well, to be honest, I am trying a few things here.

Firstly, we want to see who is the best player, when taken out of there comfort zone. Putting people into a tournament full of 'typical builds' is not going to test people as much.

Secondly, our mandate is to use none of the same Codex's, right from the start. Therefore, we do need Comp, so that all the Codex's get a fair representation. It allows us to use some of the older Codex's that we wanted to that otherwise in no-Comp it would not have worked.

I think you will surprise yourself once you see how competitive Daemons or even potentially Necrons can be if you are talking a 3/5 list environment.

To be honest Charlie, there was alot of positive feedback about this system from players all around Australia that I would consider to be some of the best I have come accross, and, there overall rankings show that.

If you think that because we include Daemons or Necrons in the event that the kind of people that are proven consistently to be some of the best in the country would consider the event a joke, then I would have to go out on a limb that you would be quite mistaken!

If you think that people on YTTH or 3++ would think its a joke? Then to be honest I dont really give a rats arse what they think wink.gif

i'm curious as to how someone can state that the codexes have different power levels and that comp is an abomination in the same post. and continue with the 'comp is on the way out' after a TO has reminded people that over 50% of the events are comp. not to mention the numbers at tourneys not reflecting that at all.

its special armata_PDT_34.gif

at the end of the day, if its not broken, don't fix it. last years seemed to have pretty much all positive feedback

As an outsider looking in, I love the idea. Also, if you think daemons are soft then you haven't read the book...

Update guys,

Due to unforseen developments, we have to change the date.

The new date is Sunday the 20th of November.

Also, we have the top 10 armies used in South Australia for 2011 and therefore our 10 armies for this years Masters!

They are in no particular order:

Space Marines
Space Wolves
Blood Angels
Grey Knights
Chaos Space Marines
Eldar
Dark Eldar
Orks
Tyranids
Imperial Guard

So once again, a nice 50/50 mix of Power and non-Power armour.

Necrons, Dark Angels and Daemons all narrowly miss out, with Witch Hunters nowhere to be seen. This will probably change this year.

Ok, so the last event for the qualifying period has been run, the scores have been tallied - the date is set and the armies are in design phase interstate. Lets build some momentum. Who are the ten ? Who is coming, who's declined ?
