Hey all,

Looking to use some langtons 1:1200 napoleonic ships for a pirate style BFG fleet. The problem is, I also love the period and the style of warfare, so I could very well wind up wanting more and to do the age of sail thing properly.

So with that in mind, who out there plays?? Im not expecting alot of games, but the games I do get I want to be fun. So far ive seen positives and negatives for signal close action and sails of glory. What else is there and can anyone else give any of their experiences with either of the above games??

Cheers, Ronin

Tried TFL's Kiss Me Hardy which has a beer-and-pretzel flavour to it. Lots of fun. Not too difficult to pick up. A casual acquaintance tried to lure me to Sails of Glory. Looked at it but not tried it. He swears by it. Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck.

Have laid hands on trafalgar, seems quite good, yet to try it out though but seems like the best entry point.

Sails of glory really didnt catch me, and the ships themselves are wildly underwhelming.

Will try and squeeze in a few games of trafalgar and report back with playability.

Cheers, Ronin

I have that too, the rules look nice but I have available trafalgar players here so will start with that. Will hopefully get into fighting sail at some point soon too.

Absolutely not. This scale is hard to achieve much, and the masts are such incredibly soft lead that I feel they would simply bend and shatter any super glue anyway.

The idea has been put into my head to throw them up on ebay now and put the money towards 1:1200 ships... Will see. Havnt even had a game with them yet....

Cheers, Ronin

Are they 1/2400-3000? They are very nicely done. I love my Langton 1/1200, cant recommend them enough!

Cheers man, yeah 2400s, a bit fiddly and a bit lacking in some detail aspects but nice enough to put paint on.

Im currently looking at a bunch of langtons, be good to get to fully paint and rig some ships, though im worried its a slippery slope to actual wooden scale kits....

Cheers, Ronin

GW Trafalgar...what should have been great turns Napoleonic sail into a farce, just my opinion mind ! smile.gif

a few things:

Ships of the line did not outpoint 12m America's Cup yachts, sailing within 15 degrees of the wind is crazy and takes away the whole essence of sail.

the weather does not change, minute by minute, from a roaring gale to the doldrums. A gradual change in a few hours is reasonable, but not turn by turn.

naval captains of the era were quite competent in training their crews so that tacking or wearing a ship was a relatively painless activity. The idea that each ship must do a command check to successfully tack, or risk damaging foremasts, is ludicrous. Under fire perhaps, but not as a matter of course.

The IGUG sequence means fire as you bear becomes the only real option if you happen to be chasing the enemy and they do not bear when the firing phase executes. Fire as you bear should be the norm to replicate the ships sailing on parallel tracks at the same speed.

The french have a slight advantage unless the admiral rules are introduced, as they can fire high without penalty.

the big problem are the critical hits. When a game just boils down to luck on a few dice about which ship catches fire first, I think the thrill of outmaneuvering and out shooting your opponent is lost.

so, I have taken a few of the good points and changed Trafalgar around a bit, with some knowledge about sailing and so forth. It can play well...

I dont know if you can still get them but we used to use a set called Heart of Oak, fro what I remember they were brilliant and suited us nicely for gaming this era. It felt like you were making sailing decisions with crews that knew what they were doing (which in period they sure did, none of this tacking was difficult rules etc) .

Not so much, just an ex sailor having some issues looking for reality.

Inmean the OP did ask for opinions.

Think about it from your perspective it would be like a game where tanks need leadership tests to turn and might catch on fire when being hit with bullets. Sure, it might be fun mechanically but what one person finds fun ithers might find annoying.

It didnt help in the game I played that the dice rolling was a bit abnormal and everyones sails kept catching on fire. Put the fires out asshats, theres water everywhere oh welp nevermind
