Hi,
I am looking at trialling some different options with my marines and was thinking of sticking a character in with my assault marines (loaded up in a thunderhawk with Dev marines)... so my question is this...aside from Supreme Commander, which character is better with assault marines...Chaplain, Captain or Librarian? I am looking for maximising the crunch factor for CC and thought i would ask wiser head whats the best option...or should i just test each character out in different games to see how they perform... Thanks for ur time -------------------- Warhammer: Dwarfs

Supreme Commander isn't that great in assault marines, I'd almost always rather have him somewhere else.
Captain is even more useless for that application. Chaplain gives you +1 combat result, so is considered the best option. Librarian is only really useful in devastators so you can utilise his 3+ macro attack against clipping combats or thunderhawk strikes where you want to load up again in another hawk after you're done. So... if that all confused you and you just want the straight answer, chaplain, always and forever in assault squads. -------------------- "shirty, the slightly aggressive bear"

I am looking for maximising the crunch factor for CC and thought i would ask wiser head whats the best option...or should i just test each character out in different games to see how they perform... Thanks for ur time Well the Chaplain is a GREAT addition due to his Inspiring ability (+1 to assault resolution). The only drawback of the Chaplain in an Assault Detachment is that he is at more risk of being killed before the assault resolution stage (seeing as he's best used in base to base to also get the extra Macro-Weapon close combat attack). I'd stick a Librarian in with Devastators as he still gets an extra Macro-Weapon Fire Fight attack from his Smite ability. If you could fit both characters in, that would give you 2x 3+ MW attacks, 8x 3+ attacks and 2x 4+ attacks from the Thunderhawk. +1 to assault resolution, 2x Invalnerable Saves on the charater stands and Leader in both Detachments to clear BM's later on. Lots of pain for the enemy formation! Captains are best used on formations that may be in position to use their Commander abilty. Something like 2x Terminator formations (or even 3 if you really want to get carried away), one with a Captain, could be teleported in within 5cm of eachother. Using the Commander ability, the 2 formations could attack a single (or several Intermingled enemy formations) enemy formation. This is a good way to deal with big, tough enemy units eg, large titans. Looking forward to seeing some of this in our game mate Steve. -------------------- |

Captain is even more useless for that application. Unless you want to take 2 formations of Assault troops into a combined assault.... -------------------- NetEA Space Marine Army Champion

Fine with me mate
Just remember that Necrons are quite a different opponent than most other armies. It basically an all teleporting army with hard as nails armour - no aircraft but some extremely powerful War Engines. Don't worry about who wins for now. Once you've got the basics in hand, your Marines will win many games (I hear you're doing well in the Battletech camapign -------------------- |

Remember that a FF assault is usually in your favour if you are picking the fights (with a Thunderhawk). It means that you can take on their devastating CC units on your terms and you can throw a MW in there with the Librarian.
It will not work against all forces, however it also sets you up to take on Skimmer units as well. So that is where you need to weigh up your options. Librarians are brilliant for the FF MW attack Chaplains are great if you need that +1 to combat resolution with a smaller formation (assault or terminators). Captain - probably best to spend the extra and get the Supreme Commander if you want the commander ability. I have yet to make a force that I took a Captain over a Chaplain or Librarian. It is just not worth the points unless you are making a one-trick pony list - and they usually are3 not worth the effort. |
