[DW] Kingdom of Britannia Fleet, Eagle Class Rotor Options

I picked up the Dystopian Wars book last week and I'm really keen to get playing. I'm going to try and get my club mates on board for 4-fleet bundle, but in the meantime I got myself a carrier. I've started painting it up, and I have a few shots already.

Unlike my usual efforts at armes, I don't think this game will lend itself to extreme conversions; lots of rules depend of the model dimensions. I generally don't like rules like these, but I like the DW models so much that I'll overlook it. Here is a shot of my carrier in progress:



However, I'm a big fan of magnetising things, and I went to the effort of sinking a few magnets into the ship so that I can add damage markers. 8 markers represent 9 HP (the last HP beign the ship itself). A slightly more visual way to represent damage, rather than piling on more tokens...



Lastly, started on the fighter tokens. Ugh!

Finished the carrier- a few snaps of how that came out:


I'm going for a fairly warm timber/copper scheme, as well as the obvious Union Jack on the hull for some zing. It's not so obvious on this guy, but should be clearer when I start to do it on single-hulled ships. I put some heavy blue oxidation at the waterline to reinforce the sopper thing.



A close-up of the hull. The magnet-wound stands out a lot... The ones on textured surfaces actually hide better- I'll stick to those in future. Stripes could do with a neatening.



Close-up of the deck. I don't think the magnet-wounds here stand out so badly- hooray for texture!

"Bam! You wake up on fire!" Finished chip with aspolding markers in place. No boring wound markers for me! All that reamins of this guy it to Matte it and I'm done. If I can find any good white transfers to number with, I may apply them.
Oh, the fighters are close to done too, but they're boring!

All my armies have OTT paint schemes. I prefer them to 'serious' scemes.

In the absence of any more models to paint just yet, I thought I'd put some terrain together for my club. Aiming to make two reasonably dense tables, so that when lighteded up should allow reasonable variations.

I decided to make some islands, lone rocks, reef tiles and sand bars.
The islands and rocks are blue foam stuck to MDF.

Here is a stack of the drying.

One mid-way through chopping up.





The rock texture is going to be formed by spraying the foam with non-water-based spray paints. I hear this will take a while to dry so I can't comment on appearance so far. If anyone wants to attempt this, make sure you do it outside! Also, don't choose showery day like I did. Stupid rain.

I'll take some more shots this arvo to let you know how it goes.

Ok, throughout the course of the day I've made considerable progress. I'd be happy to leave them here, but I'd like to get some snow on them before I call them done. These are af ew shows of the day's progression.

First spray highlight and blue water. In hindsight, I don't like sprayhing highlights with a can...

Green to go under the grass.

Flocked. Now they're starting to look proper! Also, I went back and did a brushed highlight of white- so much happier than with the white spray.

Some more the near near-completed islands.

On the right, you can see some lone rocks. On the far right are some sand bars (they're a greeny-yellow colour, hard to see in this photo) and roughly in the middle are some reefs.

I suspect this is a lot of terrain; 3-4 tables potentially. Not bad for a day's work! All simple stuff, but I think effective none-the-less.

Terrain is all but done. I still need to seal the flock (will do when it dries) and also put some gloss on to the bases (Which I'll do once I work out what we'll be playing on).

Ok, so my good friend (sic) picked up my starter box for me. I got stuck in tonight.
All optional turrets have been magnetised:

In addition, I have a new, better technique for the flame markers. Drill up from the bottom! So obvious in hindsight. It means there are no ugly putty wounds (I can't, for the life of me, get putty to smooth out without filing).

Cruisers are all done, too (swappable parts). They still need wound marker magnets, but they only need two more (I put one in each permanent turret). The swappable parts and the flame makers also use opposite poles, so they'll never end up in the wrong spot.
I should have more tomorrow- stay tuned! Bommers next, then I start experimenting with fuel dials on the tiny flyers (inspired by Russ from The D6 Generation). I have plenty of spares now that the fleet box is here.

My even get my first game on Saturday- eeeee!

That was the intention. On the edges, anyway. I blacked the sides with regular, cheap black spray, which ate the sides of the blue foam and gave it the uneven textrure I wanted. Then I sprayed the entire peice with water-based back spray (harder to find these days, but Bunnings had a limited line when I went there). Once it's all been covered with water-based, it's sealed against further reaction to regular spray. If you missed any small cracks with the water-based, you may get the foam eaten away some, but it'll be minimal and add more uneven texture (good thing!)
