Dear all,

Following on from my Luna Wolves army, the bug has grown and with new dex's and models being available I have found my creative juices flowing. The Storm Raven kit, although pretty ugly on its own, lets face it, it looks like a Land Raider/Vendetta Hybrid that has flown into a wall. The conversion from a well know non GW store, (not sure if they are sponsors so won't mention them, but you will know who I mean) has meant his model has the ability to look awesome.

So I splashed out on the conversion, after buying the Raven from Realm of Legends (awesome hobby store), and set about building my very own "thunder hawk". The troops will be ForgeWorld Mk5 Assault troops, later in this piece...

The basis of this army will be a Spearhead of the Luna Wolves, led by Kalus Ekaddon and the Catulan Reavers of 1st Company Luna Wolves. As the first in last out principle applies to them, see Horus Rising, the new BA's dex will provide my list.

So what have I found so far.

The conversion kit: Great kit, few rough moulds but generally good and easy to clean up with a hobby tool. Fitting resin to plastic is a challege, but this kit does work well and with some green stuff for very small gap filling this kit fits well. My only criticism would be the tail hull join, where another pisce of resin to join the 2 would finish this off well, I intend to use some plasticard to do this, you should be able to see from the photos.

Modifying the kits from the instructions on the non GW website is easy with a hobby tool and should be a very easy project for a practiced and patient hobbyist, I would suggest novices leave this be, as it could become a dogs breakfast very easily.....

The kit also comes with a to hatch instead of the gun turret supplied by GW and this for me makes the kit as the Raven is now more Aerodynamic and more Thunder Hawkesque if you like.

I have decided to go with the Plasma cannon, Multimelta version and to get the twin linked Plasmas on, have converted the lights into gun placements for the plasmas, the Multimeltas will remain in their usual spot.

So, so far so good and here are some shots in progress:
Image minus the engines and Plasmas

With Engines and Plasma fitted.

So next will be to undercoat the whole lot, this will be an airbrush of the base coat, eithe Dheneb stone or P3 off white, unsure as to which as yet. The vehicles will all be white as per the fluff, whilst the troops will be in the Black armour of First company.

Biggest mistake so far... Glueing engines in before undercoat, will make this a difficult process, but will work around it....

Now the pilot, Would this guy be in the red armour of the Mechanicum or the White armour of the Luna Wolves? Please let me know your opinions, as I have yet to remember whom flies the Thunderhawks into battle...
Anyway thanks for looking and please feel free to post your comments, good or bad! biggrin.gif

I'd hazard a guess that he'd be wearing the colours of the Luna Wolves.

Pilots are Chapter members not Techmarines, in the old SM codex, Hawk Lords would have pilots from other chapter train with them

So been hard to get some time to spend on this project, but have put a few hours in over the past week or so, and have filled the gaps in the model with green stuff.

The gaps are mainly between GW and Non GW kit, caused mainly due to some erratic sanding armata_PDT_02.gif when trying to marry the 2 kits together. Note that they are not a perfect match, but not far off. armata_PDT_01.gif

Also, I felt that the tail section where the kit joins the main body was now missing some detail and also looked as though it had been forgotten, I think an extra mould in the kit would be a very good addition.

So to fix, I used the cut off sponsons from the engines to form a cover for this part of the tail and filled the gaps with green stuff. Also carved the plate lines to continue the pattern from the main body to show a more seamless connection.

This is how it looks now, and I'm pleased. armata_PDT_37.gif

Any comments welcome.

OK, so its been a while since the last post and a lots happened...
The biggest diversion being 6th ed, which has meant tweaks to most armies and lists. The Storm Raven - Thunderhawk has been on the back burner, but following some time off, I have been able to absorb the new rules and find some of my hobby mojo.

The Stormraven now will be able to be fielded with my current army of Wolves due to the new allies rules and I can't wait to see if they also get direct access to the Storm Talons as they are also great looking models with plenty of conversion potential. But I digress.....

The Raven was undercoated with a matt grey primer, then had its first airbrush coat of Vallejo Model Air White. This was not a complete white out just enough to take away the harsh grey colour and start the blend to white panels. Following this, I airbrushed Devlan Mud onto the lowlight areas to give some more definition and also create that used look after many sorties in martian atmosphere Post this coat is the start of the final coats, where the white ceramite plating is blended up to a pure white in the centre of the plates. As you can see this is still in the process of completion but I hope you get the idea.

Good to see this progressing. I've got the same kits, waiting for an open window in my painting schedule (currently planned for 2016).

Airbrushing is looking very nice. Will you be doing some rust/weathering?

Hi Joel,

Yeah there is plans for some rust and weathering, I have my pigments at the ready, still working on these techniques before they get applied to the model. Pleased with the airbrushing as is going well, hope the weather holds and I can get done today biggrin.gif

Quick tip with the kit from Chapterhouse, prepare to use some bracing on the base panel, I used sprue lengths as a kind of roll cage, as it can be a bit flimsy.

Cheers

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I tried weathering on some Valkyries and it can be effective - easy to go too far I think.

Thanks for the tip on the kit. I think its more noticable with the resin pieces becasue the plastic kits go together so nicely.

No problem, about the tip, more than happy to help, you may also find you need to trim areas to fit too, but that will depend on the casting from Chapterhouse.

As for weathering, you are correct, sometimes less is more smile.gif

Are you going to play this as a Thunderhawk or a Storm Eagle?

It looks a little small for a Thunderhawk (and I hear they still suck in the new IA rules).

The Storm Eagle however is an awesome unit which most of the Chapters can take!

Plan is to run it as the Storm Raven for normal 40k. The use as a Thunderhawk is for Fluff reasons to follow the stories of the Luna Wolves. But could use as a Storm Eagle if I ever get to an Apoc game.
