As of today I have enabled voting in the modelling diaries forum.

I encourage you to vote sensibly as this will help direct others to diaries that are worth recommending to others.

Please note that this is a trial and that if it does not work out the feature may be deactivated.

As a guide:

1 star - 'needs work' quality
2 stars - 'getting there' quality
3 stars - tabletop quality
4 stars - high end quality
5 stars - Golden Demon/best at show quality (everyone come look at this!)

Remember that the idea of this is for the quality of the work not the subject, so don't vote stuff down just because it's a miniature or game system you don't like.

Vote away...

And by 'see here' you mean, 'see this box that I can see but you can't'?

Is this support members only or something?

I think this is a really bad idea. It will intimidate people to a level where perhaps they are unwilling to share their projects for fear of being publicly embarrassed.

I'd imagine the idea of a modelling diary area is for people to share their work without fear of being judged.....

Ok, can rate now.

And I think it's a good idea. If it's anything like the majority of forums I've seen with a rating system, it'll mostly end up with a handful of 4-5 star threads that make it easier for people to spot the 'stars' of the modelling community, while most threads won't end up rated.

I think there's a pretty good chance that the rating numbers will rapidly become meaningless (like peer scoring at a tournament) when people automatically go "five stars!" for anything that they feel like leaving a rating for.

Interesting to trial for a while, though. I've just enabled ratings on all the Veteran and higher accounts - it looks like it's been inconsistently applied to account types over the years, as the function has never been active before now.

This is only a trial for the moment.

However having said that I think that you might be overreacting a bit since even without the rating system there's nothing to stop someone just posting 'your miniatures look like crap. Give up the hobby' or other rude stuff.

In fact some people have done just this in the past.

Every response in these threads are a judgement of some sort - just a vocalised one rather than a simple star rating. If people have a fear of their work being judged they won't post it up regardless of a star rating system. The whole idea of this forum is for a couple of reasons:

- it gives you a place to post your work for feedback, both constructive or just for people to tell you if it's looking good or not.
- it helps to motivate you with people posting asking for updates.

Well, first of all, I'm not overreacting....I'm not standing here stomping my feet and bawling my eyes out in a blubbering mess like a five year old school kid who had their lunch money stolen....I'm simply passing my opinion.

Secondly, I hear what you are saying, and agree to a certain extent. However, imagine someone who is just starting up the hobby and has finished painting their first model and is proud of it and wants to put a picture up of it....they come here and see a crap load of stars marking peoples work. Some people won't care and some will. Why scare off those that, with the absence of an in-your-face voting system would take that step and post up a pic of their work.

You'll always get wankers in life who are unkind, unsupporting and unfair to others artistic efforts and will go ahead and make arse hole comments, why make it even easier for them by having a voting system as well....

Having the ability to throw stars at people hardly encourages those who get 1 or 2 stars...neither does it provide any constructive criticism....people taking the time to comment do that.....

Anyway...whatever, just passing my thoughts that's all smile.gif

Why can't I give out zero stars? This is really just a rating system out of 4, not 5. Why are we giving out pity stars! Totaly changes the weighting of the overall scores.

Yes, I reply to a lot of threads with images. That's because your posts are crap, and don't deserve anything more than a cursory Google image search.

awesome, the internet (and WAU in particular) desperately needed more ways to let people judge other people anonymously. nothing can possibly go wrong...

is there perhaps a way to turn off the rating system, for users who dont want to see it?

Yes this.

I and I think most people wouldn't bother to rate something thats only 1-3 stars. No points leavening negative feed back if it isn't constructive.

Yeah but leaving no stars is just as bad as gettIng a 1 star. No matter the skill level when people are posting there work there doin it because there proud of there efforts. How is someone to feel when every other thread has stars and they have none? Yeah there stuff may look scrappy but to them it's awesome and took there time and effort.

True.

It'll end up everyone on 5 stars or no stars (like me) I think.

But give it a go and see what comes of it...

I'm curious. Does the rating get averaged or is it just whatever the last person who rated the thread rated it?

Why not have it similar to FB 'likes' with members only able to vote once for each thread?
