Original Post Below.

NOTE: So for those of you who were at the Realm of Legends Closing night, this is the zombie game that derived from our stupid discussions.

So for everyone else. The game is based around 2-4 players who pick an indipendent character from any codex with any wargear it is allowed to have (there are positives to taking cheaper costed characters) who have to fight hordes of zombies and each other in order to be the last hero standing or to be the hero that destroys the centre tower.

The game is played on a 4x4 table and uses the 40k rule set. Each character starts in a corner and a centre tower is placed in the middle of the board. There are other towers on the board but specifics will be laid out in the rules document which I will write up and attach later. Zombies spawn from the middle tower and run in equal numbers towards the corners. The zombies spawn every fourth turn and get harder each wave (random stat increases), Characters get 1 exp and 1 gold (currency of some description) for each zombie killed which they can use to level up and increse stats or with gold buy items from their base to help kill the zombie hordes or players.

Some friends and I have had a couple of play tests and have found the game more blanced than we expected for a first draft and we had an absolute ball playing it. A game with 4 people takes around 2.5 hours, turns are very quick so players are always doing something.

I put this up so that people could share ideas and thoughts of things they would like to see in this style of game, also for those many people down at realm of legends who were keen to get the rules once they were completed. I can say the rules have been done and I will write them up in the near future in case any of you crazies want to test them out with your mates and provide feedback. There will still be some tweaks to make but so far it has been a lot of fun writing and playing.

The game plays very similar to DOTA for those who are familiar with it. The game is truely a beer and pretzils game that is great when you have a few people over and only 1 table to battle on.

Regards,
Crynn

It was actually a lot of fun. Of course I power gamed it in the 2nd test and took some rediculous character, but I think with some of the tweaks we are making that there will be more benefits to start with a cheaper character and build them up then some uber character.
I spent most of my sunday playing this game working on the rule set with christian, its definitely worth giving a go smile.gif

Don't worry I have already thought about you little game breakers do that won't be happening! That would actually break 3 individual rules! No special characters, no bases larger than 40mm and you cannot hurt towers when not within 5" which is the exact tower range. This is to stop those exact tactics! And trust me there would be worse special characters than that, imagine Njal after 4 or 5 turns! There is also close to 100 items you can buy for your character to make them feel more special!

Sounds great biggrin.gif

...Just make sure you spell "apocalypse" right wink.gif

More seriously, though, I've often thought about making a set of rules for a zombie apocalypse 40k mission, so I'd love to see what you come up with.

The rule book will be about 4 pages long so it isn't much to read through before you can bash out a game with your friends, and a whole page of that is jsut setting up the table. The ahrdest part is just ahving enough spare models for all the zombies!

I think you will enjoy it, my friends and I certainly did!

All I was thinking to myself as I read the opening paragraph was how to powergame the ultimate character. What did you come up with? Can you use Special Characters (ELDDDRRAAADDDD!!!)?

Thanks. I look forward to the rules being released so I can game the perfect character.

Yes, I'm the guy that spends half an hour at the character creation screen for any RPG video games and plans out levels in advance. Its how I roll.

You and me are one in the same. The great thing is the guys that in testing it with also have the same mindset which is great for play testing and balancing. So far there definately seem to be powerful characters however many characters seem to counter others so it all seems to balance out really well. What seems o be really good though is lots of equipment characters never take in normal 40k suddenly get quite useful!

The rules will be done by the end of the week, I have just been a bit too busy to type them all up with the 100 odd items that can be bought. Thanks for the positive comments guys!

Regards
Crynn.

They do go well however rad grenades are pretty much +1 str which like defensive grenades are easy to come by in the game. Psychotroke are good but the characters that take them end up being expensive. These kids of characters that are powerfull in Melee end up having to throw themselves in combat against zombies which depending on the way the randomly level can be very dangerous.
