Is there a reason GW doesn't support the wargaming community with tournaments and conventions in AUS?

The last post in this thread "GW Events" was back in 2010. Considering this website is THE portal for all tech savvy wargamers, wouldn't it make sense that GW would take advantage of such a resource?

Look at websites such as Miniwargaming.com that has built such a gigantic community around their site that they were able to start designing and producing their very own war game.

If there actually are regular GW events in AUS, they're just not advertised on this site, totally disregard what I've said.

Cheers

There aren't GW events in Australia because yes, GW hates us.

I thought it was because they only want to gouge us for models; they don't want to gouge us for tournaments anymore (when most 2 dayers were 30; they were 50)

The price would probably double and we'd get Finecast trophies.

We're not alone.
They canned 'Ard Boyz (finally) and yoinked prize support from UK and US tourneys as well.

It's all "too hard" for them, apparently, and doesn't benefit them enough on the bottom line (free advertising doesn't sell enough product for them).

GW Marketing is based on the heroin trade, once your hooked no need to treat you nice, just keep jacking up the price.

I hear there will be another price hike this June btw .....

Actually, I believe GW HQ "yoinked" the prize support because too many people were abusing the system by holding "Garagecons" to geet cheap product.

So really, it is probably a combination of GW hating you and people being greedy and ruining it for the rest of us.

GW do run events out of Camberwell, you just need to check with them. The guys down there (Miles and Mick mainly) are great and and very helpful. The events they run are very smooth, shops to get food and coffee. There is about 10 to 16 tables for gaming play plus a hobby area. recommend you all have a look. armata_PDT_11.gif

... really???
I know a few network engineers and IT managers and stuff who I will need to talk to... apparently they are not tech savvy... they just play with toy soldiers (some of them even GW Product) - and they obviously only pretend to know about tech stuff- because many don't even have WAU log-ins, and many that do can easily go for years without logging in here, or visiting the site...

Games Workshop is supporting our community! I swear!

They're even running overnight buses to Games Day this year! Overnight buses! From Melbourne, Canberra and Newcastle!

Seriously GW? An overnight bus from Newcastle?

Ok, maybe not THE place. But ya gotta admit. Supporting and communicating with the online community would significantly increase sales for GW. Instead independent retailers do this.

Last time I spoke to my local GW store manager about this he said GW 'Didn't need to run tournaments or online community support, because they have the stores', or something along those lines.

The problem I belive is shareholders don't see tournaments as long term gain/not in it for the long term. People just wanna make a buck quick and screw every last cent out of the company/product while they can then get out with the big dollars, therefore GW policy towards such things have changed.

Apparently the advertising of tournaments and stock listers in White Dwarf is free (what I been told) but never done it so yeah, don't know.

Will say they do seem to run alot of store based tournaments especially in school holidays and the Mt Gravett store in brisbane apparently runs some tournaments in their battlebunker, but the ones I always see are like 1000pt starter tournaments that people get upset when you bring filth. (Lvl3 Shadow mage in High elf army is wrong apparently, everyone hates the mindrazor.)

In-store tournaments hardly count. Because they are in a store. Big store and low points cost could work. I had a small shop and low points cost and it's too packed and people had to wait their turn for a table.

Meaning instead of 2 rounds, it's 1 rounds, wait 1 round, round 2, wait another round etc.. doubling the time.

GW should be convincing shareholders and stakeholders that tournaments are important but they don't even believe it themselves. It represents a greater risk because they are in a pretty unique position and have less certainty on these things.

Like, even I can't say if tournaments are important to their business at all because I know nothing about running GW or a range of implications of tournaments in regards to GW and profit.

Sadly.

They could develop a new tournament system that can be tested then replicated worldwide or outsourced to key individuals (those who run events for the love of it). I'm sure though that it will help them if they simply tried instead of saying 'nope, been there done that'.
