Would you please consider having this baby on display at the club open day on the 8th September when we plan to invite the interstate visitors to Golden Daemon to the club for some casual gaming? Quite possibly. I am not sure it will be done by then - I was aiming for the end of the year. Apart from building the rest of the base, I still need to acquire an airbrush and then learn how to use it. It would be nice for it to be a terrain piece on table featuring a Tau v Orks game.... just as long as someone else brings the Tau army. Steve |

i dont think this guys is in the know that it is for a club painting competition and just assumed it was for GD Ahhh ... yes - Steve wasn't painting for GD at all, but you're right - the GD rules state that everything must be bought from GD or scratchbuilt. Nothing in-between. In other words: if someone can't point to your model and ask to buy something like it, you're screwed. I agree, I think he meant disqualified. It will not be featuring in any other painting competition, and even if it does make it to the gaming table, I reckon it will just be a terrain piece.
@ Jared, I reckon we have a challenge! We could plonk it down in the middle of the table and battle around it using a standard scenario in the context that the tau will be defending it from a close assault force (to which it would be somewhat vulnerable having only two close range weapons on it that we could happily ignore for game purposes). @ Andrew, my research into airbrushes and compressors continues. I am hoping to get it in the next few weeks and to start practising on some old IG tanks/tyranids. Have you set up a spray booth or other safety system? Steve |

Have you set up a spray booth or other safety system? No - just an old large fruit cardboard box as a shield to stop paint going everywhere, with paper laid down (I spray in the far corner of that room downstairs) out the front of it. I use those disposable facemasks from bunnings when spraying, plus open all the windows/doors. Probably should do more. A small update. The cathedral corner sections were pretty much all acquired in "pre-loved" condition and required some work. Last weekend I scraped back to mould lines and filled the gaps using squadron green filler. This morning I sanded them back and gave them all a wash.
![]() There are a few other bits that will feature on the base but are not in the above pic. Now that I have all these together I can place/fix them on the base and start building mounds of rubble. Most of my previous terrain pieces that feature rubble have been for gaming also. As such they were designed to make it easy to use with miniatures - the realism/practical see-saw was tilted in favour of practical. As no minis will be moving across this base, I am aiming for something a bit more realistic. I have been searching for photos of ruined cities eg Stalingrad WW2. Does anyone have any resources in this area? Steve |

I have been searching for photos of ruined cities eg Stalingrad WW2. Does anyone have any resources in this area? The Call of Duty games (early ones) were set in Stalingrad and looked suitably bombed out. Sorry - that probably wont be any help. Otherwise ... Google images FTW! The first layer of rubble is down. It has been put down over some blue foam blocks to increase the height without adding much weight - this sucker is already getting heavy. Unfortunately the photos do not give much idea of the three dimensional nature of the rubble piles. The next layer will be placed selectively to cover up a few spots that got missed, to bulk up the rubble pile at the rear right leg of the Saw, and to blend the edges of the foam blocks.

Coming along very nicely! My only negative criticism is that the gravel is a bit too uniform in size, but I expect that consecutive passes of rubble will give it a bit more variation?
If I were to be really picky I'd try to get some more "identifiable" rubble in there: roof tiles, collapsed columns, toppled statues, etc. But I know that would represent a massive amount more work for minimal visual gains I'm in the process of moving to my new bachelor pad so I'm hoping once I get settled in I'll be able to continue work on my SAW painting! -------------------- Check out my Blog

@ Mangozac, thanks for the critique. There is already a fair bit of variation in there that does not show up well in the pics - there are broken tiles everywhere (white, occasionally with a red border), lengths of sprue, Hirst Art bricks and leftover pieces of just about every plastic model kit I have had since I was fifteen (including parts from a 1/35 Tiger). That being said, if it is not visible then it has not been effective so I think it is a fair call. I will see what I can add. I keep looking at the modelling diary section hoping for an update on your SAW - I hope you get settled soon!
@ Sync, thanks for the comments, I am enjoying this project immensely. Steve |

I have added a fair bit more rubble of varying types. The edge got a couple of coats of pva to smooth it off a bit. It is much easier to appreciate the contours in three dimensions. I am happy so far, but dreading airbrushing the SAW itself...

Painting has begun on the base.
![]() ![]() The wash is still wet in these pics. The next step is to grind some chalks and apply some mud and rust. I also got the Menoth starter kjit finished a couple of days ago... ![]() Steve |

Looking great Steve! Painting all of the bits of detail in the rubble looks like as much work as painting the SAW itself! It really is a trashed city to have rubble like that
