Why do chaos dreadnoughts want to die and also go into frenzies, whereas space marine dreadnoughts don't? I've been told that being in a dreadnought is like constant torture, but how does this account for the differences between chaos and SM dreads? Note: I'm not very familiar with the fluff. I'm limited to a few articles from white dwarf and imperial armour.

imperial dreads are generally put to "sleep" between wars, chaos are generally left awake and they also have the whole daemon/warp thing going on.
thats my take on it, others may have more info. JoD -------------------- 4 Sharp Whistle Blasts!!

Space Marine Dreadnoughts are simply life support systems that prolong the life of a champion that has fallen in battle. When they go to battle they're simply fighting along side the chapter they once served but now as a dreadnought.
A Chaos Space Marine Dreadnought is the same but isn't necessarily a champion and is designed to keep the occupant in eternal pain (Reasoning changes as to why). When they go to battle the systems of the dreadnought are suppose to push them towards the enemy, but that doesn't always happen. -------------------- --Campaigning against the mistreatment of Chaos Dwarves in Fantasy-- |

JoD Also some of the occupants of dreadnoughts have been in there for hundreds or thousands of years. The loyalist ones go into a sort of hybernation, so they don't notice it as much. The chaos ones don't, and in many cases are chained up between battles. Some of the chaos ones have been around since the heresy and are mad as a hatter. The only loyalist dread that is that old is Bjorn the Fell handed, and he is only woken every hundred years or so. This post has been edited by Aurenian: May 23 2012, 09:21 AM |

They also mention in the CSM codex that it is a form of torture for certain cults (namely Khornate) that they occupant can no longer get their hands on the enemy directly.

Although it should be noted that not all chaos dreadnoughts are crazed. Malcharion the War Sage from the Night Lord series being the main example, but also the Iron Warriors Warsmith who is a dreadnought from Dead Sky Black Sun, (can't remember his name). But then there are the crazed chaos dreadnoughts such as the one in the White Scars short story in Legends of the Space Marines.

I don't know about that Iron warriors one. 'Not crazed' isn't the same as 'completely sane'.
He was pretty agro. When you first see him in the book he starts cycling up his weapons to take on a pair of warhounds. This post has been edited by Aurenian: May 23 2012, 11:29 AM |

Its a shame that the Chaos dreads rules effect peoples decision to play them. They look really funky and serve a strong visual focus for the army.
-------------------- Leela: wow, aren't you Zapp Brannigan? you stopped the fleet of kill bots, right? how did you do it?
Zapp: it was simple really. Kill-bots have a preset "kill limit", once they reach this limit, they shut down. knowing their weakness, i just sent wave after wave of our own men into battle against them, once they killed them all, they were effectively shut down. |

I just got the FW Night Lords dreadnought yesterday, and it's an amazing miniature! But the rules..................... It hurts to be a Dreadnought. It hurts physically, and emotionally. Over time, this is what causes Chaos Dreadnoughts to go insane. It would do it to a loyalist Dreadnought too, if they were kept awake long enough.
I'd recommend having a read of Know No Fear. It goes into some detail the fear, pain and sadness felt by a "young" Dreadnought. -------------------- |

I have never played a game without a dread in my army, you just need to be smart with the set up.

I think the loyalists are less susceptable to the madness because they have their duty to the emperor to keep them focused.
The chaos ones have thrown that off and have no reason to endure except hatred/revenge. |

The Dread in Know No Fear was really interesting. I thought he was one of the most engaging characters.

Interesting discussion...will have to give know no fear a look when I have the time (and money! Just blew $300 on stuff for a new IG army..).
I have one question though: what about Slaaneshi dreads? I remember reading somewhere about Emperor's Children being prone to psychosis whenever they tried to sleep. And they also like pain. So even though it may be hard for them initially, because they're cut off from most of their senses, wouldnt it get better for them as time goes on and they get more and more insane? |

I agree with the rules statement, I would almost always take a defiler from instead of a dreadnought. Battlecannon plus daemonic possesion for about the same points cost....
