I quite like the chess clock idea.
Assuming a 2 hr limit for 1750 pts, give each player 60 mins to complete 5 turns. If the flag falls before you start end your 5th turn, YOU LOSE. Assuming a 2.5 hr limit for 2000 pts, give each player 75 mints to complete 5 turns. Simple. With that approach, you technically cannot lose on time, unless you default. If you are pushed for time, you simply declare your turn over before the flag falls. Not necessarily helpful for your tactical position, but it forces the issue eliminating once and for all slow play. Besides, those that have played lightning chess (and its variants) know of the adrenaline rush this can provide. Fast thinking, fast moves... exciting games!!! I pity the hoard armies though.... but that becomes a choice. This post has been edited by dragonslayer: Jun 8 2012, 08:10 PM |

2.5hrs to play 1750 is HEAPS of time, and if there are people running out of time in this format, then that is woeful.
However, dont be so quick to blame your opponents. You are one half of the issue, and if it is happening alot in your games, the common element is... you! As an example, in WA, we played 1500pts in 1.5hr time slots. I had a few games called early, and there was evidence of a 'go'slow' opponent (he made it a point to tell me he is taking his time so that another turn did not get played - I told him, we are both having another turn, so hurry up). In my (limited?) experience, I feel that; 1500pts - 1hr 45min including set up/ deployment. 1750pts - 2hr including set up deployment 2000pts - 2hr 30min including set up/ deployment. In a one day tournament, you could get 4x 1500pt/ 3x 1750pt/ 2000pt (double that for a weekend tournament). What do people think for those time limits? |

Not having enough time regularly can obviously mean there is a problem with how you are playing as well lol, but the reason I raised this as an issue is because after timing my own turns at the tournaments, my opponents often get up to twice as long as I do, and we still have a turn 5 end because of time.
With regards to the time allowances, and the problems thus far, I think you should have 2.5 hrs for 1750-2000. -------------------- ------- 6th ed tournament track 2012-13

I hate 2.5 hrs for 1750. I'm always sitting around for about an hour waiting for the round to finish. It's not that hard a game people, it doesn't require that much long drawn out thinking. I can even remember a game a couple of years ago, orks v nids (hordes for each) that still managed to be first finished in a round (by a considerable margin).

Im a new player so hopefully I havent annoyed too many of the pro's out there.
To make it absolutly fair each side should have even time, but I think it shouldnt be necessary Ive had a lot more completed games then I have had run oout of time. |

Timers don't work. Turns are interactive. If someone takes 5 mins to decide wound allocation that comes out of your time pool.

A interesting Idea would be to run a tournament in which games play until a time rather than the 5-7 turns preset by the rulebook. As the round time approaches the TO just announcing that the games all end on the next turn. Would lead to more defensive armies / play or massacres for skilled players while new players would probably take less resilient lists but take up more of the time.

Timers don't work. Turns are interactive. If someone takes 5 mins to decide wound allocation that comes out of your time pool. That would be unusual and an indication of deliberate time wasting. Although if you're worried enough about it, you could always hit the clock so the saves and allocations are in the opponents time (and do the same for yourself of course). -------------------- OT is one gigantic thread crap. go to the TO and tell them to come over, don't get someone saying they will be there shortly, on the second time it happens you go over there and DEMAND them to do their job and come and tell the guy to hurry up and to also play faster If you're gonna whine but not be forceful with a TO who you paid actual money to for games, then stfu here, we don't care. rofl to be completely honest as a TO i'd be refunding your money, showing you the door & gumbying up the draw if anyone was stupid enough to give me that kind of attitude -------------------- “My centre is giving way, my right is in retreat; situation excellent. On a related note to playing slow - what's considered bad form when deploying slow? I tend to take ages deploying but play really fast so it balances quite nicely for the most part, but people deploying slowly who also play slowly is a huge issue, so whilst discussing ideas to keep turns to a limit what about deploying which can be considered the most important 'turn' of the game?
And here's GP contributing positively to our forum once again. Nobody likes your opinions. Go away Bugger off mate. Point of fact, quite a lot of people like my outside the box thinking, how many people can post up lists which they are able to use relatively well in a comp format and get people asking if they are able to give more then max comp for top tier non-comp armies? Not that many people. Moreover, I look at the game differently to net-list spam, and a lot of people, not just here, but around the world, appreciate the perspective. There's about 30 players overseas who took my herohammer Space Wolves to heart and are loving the approach as an example. Whether the ideas are expressed here or elsewhere it gets down to one thing between you and me and anyone else - if you don't like my opinions, ignore them. It's that simple. No need to get personal and attack me and tell me to gtfo the forums, cause I'm not. Deal with it. -------------------- But seriously, I'm amazed by just how little GP has written. On a scale of 1 to Gorechild's Protege, this is nothing. It's like a Heavy Incinerator with which you've just rolled a 1 to wound. Hey you ever want to incapicate someone id give ya a hand, just gotta ask mate" "Don't try to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors, try to be better than yourself." - Faulkner. All of these things just smash you unforgivingly and theres nothing you can do to stop them. Its completely stupid to take this army the way it is, you will degfinately lose every game no matter how good you are. Challenge Accepted! W/L/D = 0/0/1 |

you should seriously write a book about how awesome you are because youd already have enough material to write a first draft
then you could sign and give it to me and then i could go on ebay and become some sort of gazillionaire im sure you may have 30 people who think your ability to add points values together is amazing but youve got several hundred here who roll their eyes when they see a post with your name on it and thats simply based on attitude not content. roawr QUOTE On a related note to playing slow - what's considered bad form when deploying slow?
