G’day, I’m a long time lurker, near enough to first time poster. After seeing some of the great projects people have going on I thought it was time that I added one of my own.

I have done a couple of project threads over on westgamer before. I find they are valuable for keeping up my motivation and also for getting feedback that improves my hobby skills.

For this project I am putting together an 1850pt Khorne Daemonkin army. The army itself is a bit of a compromise between a hobby project of the models I want and a competitive army. So basically I am putting the models I like into an army that I hope wont have its face beaten every time. I don’t expect it to be running with the big boys but hopefully I can give a good account of myself.

The 1850pt list that I am building looks like:

HQ
Jugger lord
Herald
Elites
2 units of 3 terminators
Troops
Big CSM unit of 17
Small CSM unit of 8
Fast attack
Medium sized unit of flesh hounds
Heavy support
3xmaulerfiends
Fortifications
2xvengeance batteries (1 lascannons, 1 battle cannon)
Allies
Culexus Assassin

Scoring a mighty 4 community comp points (unless I am mistaken)

At this point I have made a start on the construction. I am using a fair whack of forgeworld simply because I love the khorne conversion kits available. So termiantors and marines are in! The maulterfiends I was a little sceptical of until I put one together, these are great kits and look very fitting. They are like upsized juggernaughts, so 3 of those are in! And lets be honest, a juggerlord is so khorny he needs to be in. The assassin is there as I have had great fun with one on the board and i think that the pinnicle of anti-psyker is right up khornes alley.

I am hoping to have a lot of fun getting this army together and I hope you all enjoy it as well.

Progress pictures will be coming soon.

pretty solidly in the assembly phase at the moment. still waiting for some miscellaneous bits and peices, most notibly the khorne CSM conversion bits.

But I already had some quad icarus lascannons from the firestorm redoubt kit which I have repurposed to be part of my khorne army. note this is not the colour scheme for this army and these will be getting repainted.

I have taken one of the ectoplasma cannons from one of my maulerfiend kits to use as a chaos battle cannon. I am umming and ahhing about greenstuffing over the plasma weapon heating coils or not....

I used the trophy racks from the CSM terminator kit and some chain as well as some city terrain and plumbing caps to get these together. they are magnetised for both ease of transport and pointing them to make pew pew noises.

I did get my 6 terminators assembled. two units of 3, one with lightning claws for wrecking backfield heavy weapon teams, devestators, etc and the other with combi meltas, a chainfist and powermauls for wrecking vehicles. I used the CSM termy kit and the FW khorne terminator conversion kit. the combimeltas come from the 30k combiweapons kit. I also converted the FW Lord Zhufor model to make my 6th. I am thinking I need to add more chain to the one holding up the chained skulls.

The Red Tyrant – The Red Tyrant is a brutal and callous man, even by the standards of a chaos space marine. Made massive by an ancient suit of terminator armour, The Tyrant commands a force of similarly attired bodyguards broken into units geared for eliminating specific targets on the battlefield. His moniker is derived not from ruling a people, but from his exorbitant demands from those who seek out his specific, highly specialised services. Despite the Tyrants’ many mercurial dealings, his dedication to Khorne leads him to battle for blood and skulls almost as often as for gain.

also got my juggerlord assembled. pretty straight forward this one. added apowerpack and the left over cloak from lord zhufor to the standard crusher model and a choas axe head. I am pretty chuffed with myself making for getting the folds in the cloak to line up with the staff from the axe. the chain reins were fairly easy, I would have preferred them to be a little tauter but too late now...

Lord Furian, Master of Beasts – in the long millennia since the siege of terra, Lord Furian has fought in hundreds of battles alongside Khorne’s minions. In this time Furian has developed, or been gifted with, an unnatural ability to command and direct the fury of the more animalistic daemons of Khorne. Whether these are the fast and nimble flesh hounds or the daemon-machine hybrids that are the Maulerfiends, Furian is able to direct their wrath even in the heat of battle. His dominance of the beasts of khorne is such that he has even bent the will of a mighty juggernaut to be his personal mount. This is paired with an exceptional axe gifted by the weapon smiths of Khorne. Furian is always joined in the first wave of attack by those daemons fast enough to keep pace with his loping juggernaught.

The paint scheme is fairly basic with a limited pallet which will make painting them en masse easier, but being chaos they are not the easiest models to paint.

I have since based the model as well but forgot to take a photo. The basing is desert, with skulls/helmets on a pretty fine sand with some grass tufts. I will need to get a photo of it on the base, I think the colours really make the red on the model pop.

So I took a 1650pt version of this army to a tournament on the weekend. 3 comp points in a 16 comp points limited tourny.

I was very impressed with this army and how it worked on the field. I played 4 games and won the first 3, wins against a guard army with 2 wyverns and a knight, black templar with assault termins and 2 land raiders, space wolves with two big units of thunderwolves speced out and then a loss against a daemon summoning list featuring bloodthirster (from the book, not WD)

regretably I didnt take any pictures so very brief rundown:

Guard 13 comp: getting the goredrinker jugger lord into a blob squad got him all the benefits for kills before he and the hounds got charged by the knight. I lost a few hounds before a maulerfiend got in to strip the knights attacks, but by that point it was a foregone conclusion as all those strength 10 attacks from the juggerlord brought it down.

Templars 7 comp: the assault termies charged into my own CSM blob squad, then a counter charge by the hounds and jugger lord absolutely devastated them, leaving the maulerfiends to mop up the raiders and others.

Space Wolves 6 comp: a combination of maulerfiends and hounds charging destroyed all the thunderwolves without many problems, although I had to sacrafice my blob squad to one unit of thunderwolves to tar pit them for a turn while I dealt with the other unit. but once they were both gone he didnt have much left.

Daemons 7 comp: my hounds took a charge from the blood thirster and some skull crushers, I counter charged with my blob squad but he rolled FNP and rampage sword for his gifts on the blood thirster and the BT ended up killing everything I threw at it at the end of turn 5. the summoning caused me problems with a couple of units summoned here and there, summoning 2 more tzeentch heralds and a second blood thirster really hurt though. my callexus really put some pain on his summoning as I was able to infiltrate into 12" range of his summoning base, I even got 14 shots off in one turn because of all the horrors and tzeentch heralds. deep striking termies to take out his portaglyph helped. But with his screamers running interference, I just couldnt do enough damage to his summoning pool before I ran out of units and was wiped off the table...

Really enjoying the brutal combat this army is capable of, and the speed to get there. I was pretty chuffed with making it to the "winners" table, I was placed first overall after 3 games but in the end I came 3rd overall. If my army was fully painted I would have taken out overall even with the loss. just more motivation to keep painting!

long time without an update. I have been plugging away pretty steadily at it, just never got aroud to taking any photos.

So since the last update I:

assembled and painted all the bases for the army
finished painting my big squad of 17 marines
painted an 8 marine squad
painted a 10 dag fleshhound unit (sure, I like dags)
painted my herald (the unarmoured guy with the sword)
painted my calexus assassin
put together my own foam carry tray out of some convoluted foam to carry the 40mm based models. it worked out cheaper than buying specific carry tray for them. pretty easy too.

pictures below (sorry about quality) with an overall shot as well.

still to go (in planned order):

6 x terminators
1 x chaos lord on jugger
3 x maulerfiends
1 x vengeance weapon battery with battle cannon

So I got the 6 terminators painted. 3 for vehicle hunting with combimeltas, powermauls and a chain fist and 3 for back feild HW squad (devs ec) hunting with paired lightning claws.

I am happy pretty with how they have turned out. the FW lord zhufor model is just awesome.

sorry for the bad pictures.

Well I am happy that this army is now completely painted. 1850 points in under 6 months from conception to completion. I am pretty happy with how it has turned out.

the last models included the 3 maulerfeinds, a battlecannon vengeance battery any my juggerlord. I put a bit more time into the juggerlord, being the center piece of the army and all. I did cheat a little with the icon on his cape though.
