Looks like you have all of the key parts to a Basilean force - Get painting!

Where abouts are you? If you are on the player locator, it'll help getting games in.

Looks pretty good. Haven't been overly impressed with the foot guard to date in the army (when playing against them) in that everything else is very high movement and so the infantry tends to lag behind (looking at your list you have 5 fast units and then 3 that are much slower). Will just need to think carefully about how to use the infantry effectively - perhaps just to hold down a flank?

So I played my first game of KoW tonight on UB against the internet sensation and outright legend - Swordmaster.

Still caught up in WHFB mode but really believe that 2nd ed KoW is a great game - just need to master the movement tactic's as that's where I fell down.

The most pleasing aspect was that I could actually see what I did wrong and how making different decisions would have got a better result - in WHFB in some games I just got to the table and went... I have no chance here and nothing I could have done would have altered the result.

So onwards and upwards...

Looking forward to more games and getting a better grasp of the rules....

Hi Darth!

It was great game indeed and I am very happy to know you enjoyed it! I am sure we both made tons of mistakes and it will all be clear once I prepare a report! In fact, I have two KoW games to write about so please, be patient!

Many thanks for finding time to play against me and I am already looking forward to having a chance for a rematch smile.gif

Cheers!

That's a good summary of some strengths/appeal of KoW2. Welcome aboard mate! Look forward to hearing about your further battles/games.

Basilean army will look great on the table.

Cheers

Hi Darth!

What are your thoughts on your Basilean army after our first game? You also used a slightly different version of what you presented here.

Cheers!

I am going to try some different options but stick to the main units as I can't see the benefit on wholesale changes to a list when I haven't played the game enough - need to understand what units can do and not do first.

I think the crossbow shooting is sub-optimal with the 5+ to hit - the extra 12" range with Jar of the Four Winds doesn't help much so going to change that to Brew of Keen-Eyeness so they hit on 4+ - turns they into something better then elf archer for 10 points more.

Looking to try a Phoenix - at first glance it didn't seem all that useful but 4+ regen, breath (10) and Heal (6) might make it a goer - Defense 3+ is a bit of a killer though.

Will keep the Elohi - they hit hard, I like the models so have to make them work.

Not sure about infantry hordes - hard to maneuver and whilst 90 attacks for a rear charge if awesome I am not sure it will happen often - more inclined to regiments of Paladins - foot and Knights.

I think Panther Lances are a must for diverters but not shooting makes them less effective than elf seabreeze cav.

So there will be some changes for the rematch - just need to keep you guessing a bit tongue.gif

Hi Darth!

Basilean army has plenty to choose from so it will be quite a lot of guessing for sure! smile.gif Really looking forward to our re-match, also because out of 3 armies I had a chance to fight against, they are unique to Mantic world.

Cheers!

I really like that list. Has all the elements I chose in my theory crafting. armata_PDT_34.gif

I think the Phoenix can be great, really interested to hear how you go with it.

Yeah it will take some time, there is a lot to learn about the intricacies of the movement and manoeuvring the piece trades in your favour. I still think the army composition looks solid enough. You should probably stick to that general set up and tweak things here and there as you get more experience playing the game.

Anything of note regarding your initial thoughts about any of the units?

Hi Darth,

First of all, thanks for the game! It is always a pleasure to play against you and I can't wait when we can play with real miniatures again!

I really hope that these first games are not going to discourage you and that you will find KoW worthy spending time on. I know I felt the same after my two games against Empire of Dust. Boy that was tough!

However, you already know that movement is they key and that our previous WHFB experience can actually be a liability! I must say that when I started thinking about KoW as an autonomous game system (which it is!) it started to click. I am a new player as you are but I found joy in the games I play and I think I started doing something right.

I really think your army has a great potential and it will be fantastic to see it assembled on a nice table (and you have plenty of terrain for it now!).

I agree that leaving the gap for drakons helped me to seize the initiative. And it was indeed painful to expose crossbows for an attack from the rear. I didn't see it myself until I took the ruler to measure the distance.

I wrote the report of my own as well so I would be interested to know what you think about some suggestions I made there. In general, I believe your army has great healing abilities and that could be used to advantage both in the case of melee and shooting damage.

Cheers!

Hi Darth,

I posted the links to our respective reports on mantic website and in their Basilean sub-forum. I got a reply from GhostWarrior who recently won the Clash of Kings GT in US. Here is his advice:

QUOTE
For Darth.

I'm not going to focus too much on his list, but what I will say is that this unit:

Horde’s
Crossbowman, Brew of Keen-eyeness

Should have the Jar of the Four Winds instead. The reason is, it is a Move-or-Fire unit with Ra 24" and little Melee prowess. Darth will be better served by the additional 12" this item will provide. It will allow the horde more deployment options, and it will not have to expose it's flanks as much to get good shooting opportunities. Yes, it won't hit as much - but it will get more opportunities over the course of a game because of that range.

What we've found with this game is that it is absolutely crucial to spend time thinking about deployment, and the early turn moves. As you guys saw in your last game, you CAN lose a game by being out-deployed, or through an initial bad movement. As you two are still early into the game, I might suggest re-racking a game if you both feel confident that a bad deployment/early move has cost the game. You'll get more practice deploying and working on early moves this way - I know it's not the best for BatReps, but that's a decision for you guys to make.

As an aside - what Mission were you guys playing? Playing missions with Objectives (ie, any focal points) is a big deal.

Hi Darth,

More advice coming smile.gif One of the forum members, Bookawar, suggested reading some articles from Ironwatch e-zine. Some of them might not be the most recent but for starters he recommended those in Issues 17, 20, 23 and 24 that can be downloaded from this website:

https://ironwatch.wordpress.com/page/3/

I will read them myself too and will check the other issues as he also said that whatever written by Darklord or Briohmar is worth reading anyway.

Cheers!
